Book excerpt: This dissertation examined courtship and parental care in convict cichlids (Archocentrus nigrofasciatus), and how behaviors involved in courtship affected subsequent parental behavior. Courtship has several proposed functions, one of which is the establishment and maintenance of a pair bond to aid in offspring care in biparental monogamous species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the most recent and most comprehensive consideration of the largest family of bony fishes, the Cichlidae. This book offers an integrated perspective of cichlid fishes ranging from conservation of threatened species to management of cichlids as invasive species themselves. Long-standing models of taxonomy and systematics are subjected to the most recent applications and interpretations of molecular evidence and multivariate analyses; and cichlid adaptive radiations at different scales are elucidated. The incredible diversity of endemic cichlid species in African lakes is revisited as possible examples of sympatric speciation and as serious cases for management in complex anthropogenic environments. Extreme hydrology and bathymetry as driver of micro-allopatric speciation is explored in the African riverine hotspot of diversity of the lower Congo River. Dramatic new molecular evidence draws attention to the complex taxonomy and systematics of Neotropical cichlids including the crater lakes of Central America. Molecular genetics, genomics, imaging tools and field study techniques assess the roles of natural, sexual and kin selection in shaping cichlid traits and beyond. The complex behavioral adaptations of cichlids are considered from a number of sub-disciplines including sensory biology, neurobiology, development, and evolutionary ecology. Most importantly, this volume puts forth a wealth of new interpretations, explanatory hypotheses and proposals for practical management and applications that will shape the future for these remarkable fishes in nature as well as their use as models for the study of biology.

Book excerpt: In experiment 1, I examined whether male convict cichlids were more competitive and females were more choosy as is found in many species. In contrast to expectations, females were, in fact, more competitive while males appeared more choosy. Though the presence of a spawning site increased aggression in both sexes, female aggression increased more.

Furthermore, I determined whether large mates have to physically participate in the contest in order to influence contest outcome. Male size influenced female contest outcomes, regardless of whether or not the male mate participated in the contest. However, female size did not influence male contests.

Book excerpt: This research focuses on an individuals' search for a mate, which is important because an individual's mate choice influences the survival and subsequent reproductive success of offspring. In monogamous species, such as the convict cichlid, Archocentrus nigrofasciatus, males and females are expected to be selective, as opposed to polygynous (female choice) and polyandrous (male choice) species. These experiments were designed to test the hypotheses that males and females search for their mates differently, and whether mate searching is influenced by the presence of competitors. Such experiments are difficult to conduct under natural conditions where multiple individuals of both sexes influence mate selection. A unique experimental design was invented to examine male mate searching separately from female mate searching. Male preference (time spent with selected female, visits to selected female, and courtship) and selection were examined such that males could visit two different, isolated females. Female searching was studied in the converse arrangement. In the absence of competition, males exhibited different search patterns than females but were similar in the presence of competition. Non-competing females expressed time preferences for males they selected, but still invested attention in rejected males and courted both males similarly. Conversely, non-competing males expressed a courtship preference for selected females, but still courted rejected females some and spent equal time with each female. In the presence of competition, males and females both expressed time preferences for selected mates. Competitors that mated were more aggressive towards competitors that did not mate, but only in the presence of selected mates. The results are consistent with the idea that expression of a time preference functions to guard one's investment in a mate and future offspring. The presence of competition changed the search patterns of males more than females indicating that male mate searching is more labile than female mate searching. In summary, these results confirmed that (1) males and females differ in their mate selection behavior, (2) only some of these behaviors are influenced by competitors, and (3) suggest that these search patterns might play a role in guarding reproductive investment while continually assessing other potential mates until reproduction occurs.

This group contains mainly small species which adjust quickly to captivity, exhibiting a readiness to breed and long periods of parental care for the young. This books comprehensive volume describes the current knowledge on the behaviour and ecology of the cichlid fishes.

Book excerpt: Cichlid fishes are amazing creatures. In terms of sheer number of species, they are the most successful of all families of vertebrate animals, and the extent and speed with which they have evolved in some African lakes has made them the darlings of evolutionary biologists. But what truly captivates biologists like George Barlow -- not to mention thousands of aquarists the world over -- is the complexity of their social lives and their devotion to family (most species of cichlids are monogamous and many pairs share the responsibility of raising offspring). In this wonderful book, Barlow describes the unusually high intelligence of these fishes, their complex mating and parenting rituals, their bizarre feeding and fighting habits, and the unusual adaptations and explosive rate of speciation that have enabled them to proliferate and flourish. A celebration of their diversity, The Cichlid Fishes is also a marvelous exploration of how these unique animals might help resolve the age-old puzzle of how species arise and evolve.

Book excerpt: How can we explain the peacock's beautiful tail decorations, or the wonderful song of the nightingale? Why are some smells nice and others nasty? How do animals signal their intentions and qualities to potential partners? How do offspring tell parents about their needs? Are signals tuned to the environment, and to the mental abilities of receivers? Essential for understanding how animals cope with their ecological and social environment, the study of animal signals is one of the most active research areas in evolutionary biology. Understanding the signalling systems of nature has wide-ranging relevance including biological conservation and human communication. Written by international scientists, this is a comprehensive overview of the fascinating diversity of animal signals and signalling functions. Combining reviews and research, the book is aimed at both students and professional scientists.

Book excerpt: The study of alternative reproductive tactics (the behavioural strategies used by individuals to increase their reproductive success) is an evolutionary puzzle, and one of great interest to researchers. For instance, why do some males guard both nest and eggs, while others sneak into nests while pairs are spawning and fertilise those eggs? The field offers a special opportunity to study the evolution and functional causes of phenotypic variation, which is a general problem in the field of evolutionary biology. By integrating both mechanistic (psychological) and evolutionary (behavioural ecology) perspectives and by covering a great diversity of species, Alternative Reproductive Tactics addresses this integrated topic of longstanding interest, bringing together a multitude of otherwise scattered information in an accessible form that is ideal for graduate students and researchers.
