Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expert Systems for Engineering Design presents the application of expert system methods to a variety of engineering design problems. This book provides the technical details on how the methods are used to solve specific design problems in chemical engineering, civil engineering, and several others. Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the synthesis, the creation, and development of alternative designs. This text then examines the nature of design expertise and the types of computer tools that can enhance the expert's decision-making. Other chapters consider the integration of tools into intelligent, cooperative frameworks. This book discusses as well the use of graphic interfaces with built-in knowledge about the designs being configured. The final chapter deals with the development of software tools for automatic design synthesis and evaluation within the integrated framework of a computer-aided mechanical design system known as CASE, which stands for computer-aided simultaneous engineering. This book is a valuable resource for engineers and architects.

Book excerpt: Over the last decade, there has been considerable progress in investigating methods of symbolic mathematics in many application areas of computer science and artifical intelligence, such as engineering design, solid and geometric modelling, robotics and motion planning, and machine vision. This research has produced few applications within engineering and robotics because of the combinatorial cost of symbolic techniques. Therefore, it is essential to investigate approaches for systematic integration of symbolic with numerical techniques which are efficient for handling the huge amount of data that arises in practical applications, while at the same time maintain a logically consistent solution framework. Symbolic and Numerical Computation for Artificial Intelligence gives an overview of applications in machine vision, robotics and engineering design where there is a need for integrating symbolic and numerical methods. It also illustrates the case for an integrated symbolic and numerical environment to support the needs of these applications. This book will be essential reading for researchers in applied mathematics, symbolic and algebraic manipulation, and applied artificial intell

Book excerpt: This book is about the role of expert systems in marketing, particularly in the consumer goods industry. Section I describes the changing nature of consumer marketing and presents the rationale and need for expert systems. The remainder of the book combines a tutorial on expert systems with a series of expert system prototypes. The tutorial material is presented in three places. First, section II is devoted to introducing expert systems in general. Chapter 3 provides a general introduction to the topic, which is continued in chapter 4 where a small expert system (the Promotion Advisor) is used to illustrate the important features of a backward-chaining, rule-based system. The promotion theme is extended in chapter 5 where a larger system is presented. The material in all three of these chapters was designed as an introduction and tutorial on the most common technology for building applied expert systems: the backward-chaining, rule-based inference engine. Tutorial material is also contained in the body of the chapters that describe the prototypes. This material is usually in the form of sample rules and a description of the process for applying the rules. The third location of the expert system material is in chapters that follow discussions of the prototypes. Chapter 7 is a technical chapter on the coupling of expert systems to traditional systems.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers, updated in some cases, presented at the first AISMC (Artificial Intelligence and Symbolic Mathematical Computations)conference, held in Karlsruhe, August 3-6, 1992. This was the first conference to be devoted to such a topic after a long period when SMC made no appearance in AI conferences, though it used to be welcome in the early days of AI. Some conferences were held recently on mathematics and AI, but none was directly comparable in scope to this conference. Because of the novelty of the domain, authors were given longer allocations of time than usual in which to present their work. As a result, extended and fruitful discussions followed each paper. The introductory chapter in this book, which was not presented during the conference, reflects in many ways the flavor of these discussions and aims to set out the framework for future activities in this domain of research. In addition to the introduction, the volume contains 20 papers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to introduce and explain research at the boundary between two fields that view problem solving from different perspectives. Researchers in operations research and artificial intelligence have traditionally remained separate in their activities. Recently, there has been an explosion of work at the border of the two fields, as members of both communities seek to leverage their activities and resolve problems that remain intractable to pure operations research or artificial intelligence techniques. This book presents representative results from this current flurry of activity and provides insights into promising directions for continued exploration. This book should be of special interest to researchers in artificial intelligence and operations research because it exposes a number of applications and techniques, which have benefited from the integration of problem solving strategies. Even researchers working on different applications or with different techniques can benefit from the descriptions contained here, because they provide insight into effective methods for combining approaches from the two fields. Additionally, researchers in both communities will find a wealth of pointers to challenging new problems and potential opportunities that exist at the interface between operations research and artificial intelligence. In addition to the obvious interest the book should have for members of the operations research and artificial intelligence communities, the papers here are also relevant to members of other research communities and development activities that can benefit from improvements to fundamental problem solving approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the well-known mathematical software systems are batch oriented, though in the past few years there have been attempts to incorporate ``knowledge'' or ``expertise'' into these systems. A number of developments have helped in making the systems more powerful and user-friendly: algorithm/parameter selection for the solution of well-defined mathematical engineering problems; parallel computing; computer graphics technology; interface development tools; and of course the years of experience with these systems and the increase in available computing power have made it practical to fulfill the potential seen in the early years of their development. This book covers four main areas of the subject: Application Oriented Expert Systems, Advisory Systems, Knowledge Manipulation Issues, and User Interfaces.

Book excerpt: It is quite an onerous task to edit the proceedings of a two week long institute with learned contributors from many parts of the world. All the same, the editorial team has found the process of refereeing and reviewing the contributions worthwhile and completing the volume has proven to be a satisfying task. In setting up the institute we had considered models and methods taken from a number of different disciplines. As a result the whole institute - preparing for it, attending it and editing the proceedings - proved to be an intense learning experience for us. Here I speak on behalf of the committee and the editorial team. By the time the institute took place, the papers were delivered and the delegates exchanged their views, the structure of the topics covered and their relative positioning appeared in a different light. In editing the volume I felt compelled to introduce a new structure in grouping the papers. The contents of this volume are organised in eight main sections set out below: 1 . Abstracts. 2. Review Paper. 3. Models with Multiple Criteria and Single or Multiple Decision Makers. 4. Use of Optimisation Models as Decision Support Tools. 5. Role of Information Systems in Decision Making: Database and Model Management Issues. 6. Methods of Artificial Intelligence in Decision Making: Intelligent Knowledge Based Systems. 7. Representation of Uncertainty in Mathematical Models and Knowledge Based Systems. 8. Mathematical Basis for Constructing Models and Model Validation.
