Book excerpt: The MCNP5 Monte Carlo particle transport code has been coupled to the computational fluid dynamics code, STAR-CCM+, to provide a high fidelity multi-physics simulation tool for analyzing the steady state properties of a PWR core. The codes are executed separately and coupled externally through a Perl script. The Perl script automates the exchange of temperature, density, and volumetric heating information between the codes using ASCII text data files. Fortran90 and Java utility programs the assist job automation with data post-processing and file management. The MCNP5 utility code, MAKXSF, pre-generates temperature dependent cross section libraries for the thermal feedback calculations. The MCNP50́3STAR-CCM+ coupled simulation tool, dubbed MULTINUKE, is applied to two steady state, PWR models to demonstrate its usage and capabilities. The first demonstration model, a single fuel element surrounded by water, consists of 9,984 CFD cells and 7,489 neutronic cells. The second model is a 3 x 3 PWR lattice model, consisting of 89,856 CFD cells and 67,401 neutronic cells. Fission energy deposition (fission and prompt gamma heating) is tallied over all UO2 cells in the models using the F7:N tally in MCNP5. The demonstration calculations show reasonable results that agree with PWR values typically reported in literature. Temperature and fission reaction rate distributions are realistic and intuitive. Reactivity coefficients are also deemed reasonable in comparison to historically reported data. Mesh count is held to a minimum in both models to expedite computation time on a 2.8 GHz quad core machine with 1 GB RAM. The simulations on a quad core machine indicate that a massively parallelized implementation of MULTINUKE could be used to assess larger multi-million cell models with more complicated, time-dependent neutronic and thermal-hydraulic feedback effects.

Book excerpt: This report presents the effort under way at Argonne National Laboratory toward a comprehensive, integrated computational tool intended mainly for the high-fidelity simulation of sodium-cooled fast reactors. The main activities carried out involved neutronics, thermal hydraulics, coupling strategies, software architecture, and high-performance computing. A new neutronics code, UNIC, is being developed. The first phase involves the application of a spherical harmonics method to a general, unstructured three-dimensional mesh. The method also has been interfaced with a method of characteristics. The spherical harmonics equations were implemented in a stand-alone code that was then used to solve several benchmark problems. For thermal hydraulics, a computational fluid dynamics code called Nek5000, developed in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division for coupled hydrodynamics and heat transfer, has been applied to a single-pin, periodic cell in the wire-wrap geometry typical of advanced burner reactors. Numerical strategies for multiphysics coupling have been considered and higher-accuracy efficient methods proposed to finely simulate coupled neutronic/thermal-hydraulic reactor transients. Initial steps have been taken in order to couple UNIC and Nek5000, and simplified problems have been defined and solved for testing. Furthermore, we have begun developing a lightweight computational framework, based in part on carefully selected open source tools, to nonobtrusively and efficiently integrate the individual physics modules into a unified simulation tool.

Two different CERMET fueled Nuclear Thermal Propulsion reactors were modeled to determine the optimum coolant channel surface area to volume ratio required to cool a 25,000 lbf rocket engine operating at a specific impulse of 940 seconds. Both reactor concepts were computationally fueled with hexagonal cross section fuel elements having a flat-to-flat distance of 3.51 cm and containing 60 vol.% UO2 enriched to 93wt.%U235 and 40 vol.% tungsten. Coolant channel configuration consisted of a 37 coolant channel fuel element and a 61 coolant channel model representing 0.3 and 0.6 surface area to volume ratios respectively. The energy deposition from decelerating fission products and scattered neutrons and photons was determined using the MCNP monte carlo code and then imported into the STAR-CCM+ computational fluid dynamics code. The 37 coolant channel case was shown to be insufficient in cooling the core to a peak temperature of 3000 K; however, the 61 coolant channel model shows promise for maintaining a peak core temperature of 3000 K, with no more refinements to the surface area to volume ratio. The core was modeled to have a power density of 9.34 GW/m3 with a thrust to weight ratio of 5.7.

Results of the analysis of the helium-cooled channel for High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors and hydrogen-cooled channel for NTP show significant differences compared to frozen chemistry approaches, validating the need for a real property CFD solver development. Once validated on the coolant channels, the real property fine-mesh solver is implemented into a coarse mesh system code. The coupled fine and coarse-mesh solver is applied to model the entire NTP system: high resolution solution is obtained by modeling the core with the fine-mesh solver. Simulation of the system with the new coupled code shows great improvement in accuracy, speed and stability.

Book excerpt: Modern nuclear reactor safety codes require the ability to solve detailed coupled neutronic- thermal fluids problems. For larger cores, this implies fully coupled higher dimensionality spatial dynamics with appropriate feedback models that can provide enough resolution to accurately compute core heat generation and removal during steady and unsteady conditions. The reactor analysis code PRONGHORN is being coupled to RELAP-7 as a first step to extend RELAP's current capabilities. This report details the mathematical models, the type of coupling, and the testing results from the integrated system. RELAP-7 is a MOOSE-based application that solves the continuity, momentum, and energy equations in 1-D for a compressible fluid. The pipe and joint capabilities enable it to model parts of the power conversion unit. The PRONGHORN application, also developed on the MOOSE infrastructure, solves the coupled equations that define the neutron diffusion, fluid flow, and heat transfer in a full core model. The two systems are loosely coupled to simplify the transition towards a more complex infrastructure. The integration is tested on a simplified version of the OECD/NEA MHTGR-350 Coupled Neutronics-Thermal Fluids benchmark model.
