In order to escape the forced labour scheme that sends French kids to work in German factories, Philippe joins the French resistance, but his best friend Yves - who has a scar on his face that makes him look as if he's always smiling - joins the Milice or French Gestapo. The boyhood friends are now on opposite sides in one of the bloodiest conflicts in history. While hiding in the forest with the underground movement, Philippe goes swimming with some young patriots. One of them is circumcised - he must be a Jew. Then the band of French partisans gets orders to attack the crack Das Reich Division. But things go badly wrong. The Nazis are an efficient fighting machine - the French as rag-tag secret army. Philippe is badly wounded and found by a German patrol. An officer arrives who speaks perfect French. And his mouth is twisted into a permanent smile... In war there are no winners, and in 'Coup de Grace In Three Acts', good does not triumph over evil - the price for treachery is seldom exacted - and brutality is meted out equally on both sides of the struggle for Liberation. This three act version of my novel 'Coup de Grace', is a neo-noir film script presented in a non-movie industry format that makes it easy for everyday readers to enjoy. It is based on my novel of the same name but many changes have been made - especially the denoument - which is very different from that in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential message of the ‘two regimes’ model is that the social politics of fatherhood have taken on a global significance and that the USA and Sweden represent two ends of an international continuum of ways of thinking about fatherhood. The key selling points of the two regimes model are its topicality, originality, its global appeal, and its particularised appeal to readers in the USA, the Nordic countries, Great Britain, Ireland, the European Union, Japan and China. The book offers students a comparative analytical framework and new insights into why some welfare states have ‘father-friendly’ social policies and others do not. The book makes an original contribution to the growing fields of welfare regime and gender studies by linking the epochal decline of patriarchal fatherhood to welfare state expansion over the course of the twentieth century and it raises new questions about the legitimacy of religiously inspired neo-patriarchy.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1968, this authoritative study analyses the Parlement as a law court and examines its political role and significance. From its beginning in the mid-13th Century until its fall during the 1789 Revolution, the Paris Parlement stood at the heart of government in France. Its primary function as the crown’s judicial authority grew out of the need for a royal court to dispense justice when the king could no longer do so personally. The book describes how the Parlement evolved sophisticated procedures and a complex organization of chambers, officers and personnel and examines the Parlement’s judicial and political growth, against the social backdrop of the Court and the Palais de Justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most original and authoritative voice of today's English lexicography presents a fully revised new edition of his beloved usage dictionary When Bryan Garner published the first edition of A Dictionary of Modern American Usage in 1999, the book quickly became one of the most influential style guides ever written for the English language. After four previous editions and over twenty years, our language has evolved in many ways, and the powerful tool of big data has revolutionized lexicography. This extensively revised new edition fully captures these changes, featuring a thousand new entries and over two hundred replacement entries, thoroughly updated usage data and ratios on word frequency based on the Google Ngram Viewer, a more balanced coverage of World Englishes, not just American and British, and the inclusion of gender-neutral language. However, one thing has not changed: in no sense is this a regular dictionary but a masterpiece of lexicography written with wit and personality by one of the preeminent authorities on the English language. To put it in David Foster Wallace's words, Garner's discussion of rhetoric and style still borders on genius. From the (lost) battle between self-deprecating and self-depreciating to the misuse of it's for its, from the variant spelling patty-cake taking over pat-a-cake in American English to the singular uses of they, Garner explains the nuances of grammar and vocabulary and the linguistic blunders to which modern writers and speakers are prone, whether in word choice, syntax, phrasing, punctuation, or pronunciation. His empirical approach liberates English from two extremes: from the purists who maintain that split infinitives and sentence-ending prepositions are malfeasances and from the linguistic relativists who believe that whatever people say or write must necessarily be accepted. The purpose of Garner's dictionary is to help writers, editors, and speakers use the language effectively. And it does so in a playful and persuasive way that will help you sound grammatical but relaxed, refined but natural, correct but unpedantic.

In it, the Author and the Reader enter the tunnel of gloomy darkness, an Underground Railroad from Poland to the West used by the surviving Jews after Hitlers final debacle in his anti-Jewish WANNSEE CRUSADE. Along with Frank you will be inching your way toward the glimmering light at the end of that tunnel. Once out, you will follow Franks search for the Spirit of Redemption, the mystical Girl of the Ring, a vibrant young woman, whom eventually he finds in the flesh.
