Book excerpt: Have you ever had to decide what to do with an unidentified corpse by a Devonian cowshed when the herd is due in for milking? And how would you react if one of your patients was abducted by aliens? If you are a GP it seems these are routine matters. From coping with the suicide of a colleague to the unusual whereabouts of a jar of Coleman's mustard, this is the story of one rural doctor's often misguided attempts to make sense of the career in which he has unwittingly found himself. Dr Sparrow's adventures would be utterly unbelievable were they not 100% true stories. His bedside manner may sometimes leave a little to be desired but, if you're in dire straits, this doctor will have you in stitches.

And what about the little old lady who presents you with a supermarket bag stuffed with £20 notes? Add to this, jets crashing on the runway, fleeting glimpses of the Royal Genitalia and the haunting tale of the suicidal stranger and an abducted child - and you will start to have some idea of the unpredictable life of Dr Sparrow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains my reflections upon my 26 years as an "old time" generalist family physician in rural America. It is merely a collection of stories that depict some of my many experiences over the years. The stories mirror those of many of my generalist colleagues who have experienced "the trenches" of rural primary care. My stories span the breadth and depth of the discipline of rural family medicine. Stories range from assisting mothers giving birth to caring for and comforting those at the end of life, from performing surgery to becoming involved in one's community, and from making house calls to providing emergency room care. Some are silly, some are sad, some are funny, and some may make you mad. JIMMIE ASHCRAFT, M.D. Doctor Ashcraft is a graduate of the University of Oregon Medical School. He was a member of the clinical staff of the University of Washington Medical School for 30 years. Doctor Ashcraft and his wife, Kay, live in Montana. They have three grown children and six grandchildren.

Book excerpt: Yet More Tales of a Country Doctor is the third in Carter's trilogy of stories drawn from his much-loved rural practice, where he served the local community as their doctor for thirty-three years. The stories, which are all drawn from true events, reflect the very personal, as well as equal, relationships which are a feature of country life. Like life itself, many of these stories are simultaneously both funny and sad. Yet More Tales of a Country Doctor, through the exploits of the various characters, explores many of the issues which face us all, and celebrates the indomitable spirit of every day heroes in overcoming whatever obstacles might lie in their way. As with the two earlier books in the trilogy ("Tales of a country doctor", and "The further tales of a country doctor"), this collection of stories will keep you highly entertained, and stay in your mind for a long time to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have been most gratified with the positive response to my first book, Reflections of a Country Doctor. Many readers encouraged me to write another book that told the rest of my story. This book contains some of my experiences during my premedical and medical training years and more of my experiences during my twenty-six years as an "old time" family physician in rural America. Stories range from assisting mothers giving birth to caring for and comforting those at the end of life, from experiencing the joys of pediatrics to the frustrations of medical errors, from performing surgery to becoming involved in one's community, and from making routine home visits to providing life-ordeath emergency care. In keeping with the format of Reflections of a Country Doctor, some of the stories are silly, some are sad, some are funny, and some may make you mad. Doctor Ashcraft grew up as one of four brothers in a poor family in Montana. Despite a difficult childhood, he managed to work his way through college. He was the first graduate from Eastern Montana College to graduate from a medical school. He graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School. After his medical training he served in the National Health Service Corps. Doctor Ashcraft practiced as a family physician in Sidney, Montana, for twenty-five years. Afterward, he was a member of the faculty of the Montana Family Medicine Residency, a program that he helped to develop. Doctor Ashcraft was a member of the clinical faculty of the University of Washington Medical School for thirty years. He is a Lifetime Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Doctor Ashcraft and his wife Kay still live in Montana. They have three children and six grandchildren.

Book excerpt: An African proverb says, "It takes an entire village to raise a child". The same can be said of physicians. No one traverses the journey through medical training and private practice by themselves because "the stars are aligned just right". The journey demands a considerable supportive effort from a village of many or perhaps many villages. This book contains my reflections upon my 26 years as an "old time" generalist family physician in rural America. It is merely a collection of stories that depict some of my experiences over the years. The stories mirror those of many of my generalist colleagues who have experienced "the trenches" of rural primary care. In fact, on occasion, I introduced myself as nothing more than a full time "trenchologist".My stories span the breadth and depth of the discipline of rural family medicine. Stories range from assisting mothers giving birth to caring for and comforting those at the end of life and from performing surgery to becoming involved in one's community. Book excerpt: "Beautiful, humorous, and lucidly written, A Country Doctor's Casebook is a heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking treasure of American rural medical history. For those who may have become disenchanted about the craft of medicine, here the enchantment returns." Pierre Delattre, author of Woman on the Cross, Episodes, and Tales of a Dalai Lama "This pioneer physician's account of medicine, life, and death in the north of northern Minnesota is suffused by humanitarian warmth and humor. We all are there: Native Americans and immigrants, our lives beset by accidents and illness, and above all the love and dedication making us who we are, helped by our own Galen. A great read."Robert Treuer, author of The Tree Farm: Replanting a Life "A Country Doctor's Casebook is a delight--wonderfully written with a wry sense of humor. These stories ring true: compassionate, gentle, loving portraits of people for whom Dr. MacDonald cared deeply."David Hilfiker, md, author of Healing the Wounds: A Physician Looks at His Work and Not All of Us Are Saints: A Doctor?s Journey with the Poor

Book excerpt: In this quietly revolutionary work of social observation and medical philosophy, Booker Prize-winning writer John Berger and the photographer Jean Mohr train their gaze on an English country doctor and find a universal man--one who has taken it upon himself to recognize his patient's humanity when illness and the fear of death have made them unrecognizable to themselves. In the impoverished rural community in which he works, John Sassall tend the maimed, the dying, and the lonely. He is not only the dispenser of cures but the repository of memories. And as Berger and Mohr follow Sassall about his rounds, they produce a book whose careful detail broadens into a meditation on the value we assign a human life. First published thirty years ago, A Fortunate Man remains moving and deeply relevant--no other book has offered such a close and passionate investigation of the roles doctors play in their society. "In contemporary letters John Berger seems to me peerless; not since Lawrence has there been a writer who offers such attentiveness to the sensual world with responsiveness to the imperatives of conscience." --Susan Sontag
