Some day he foresees that the new generation will come knocking at the door, and the event terrifies him There is very much the same sort of feeling among many people who esteem themselves the exponents and custodians of religion. Nothing occasions them so much dread as the working of the modern spirit. They cannot comprehend that " God fulfils Himself in many ways lest one good custom should corrupt the world." They do not confess their terror in the same way as the Master Builder does; but if their condition of mind were analyzed, it would be found identical with his: they fear the young. Now what is there in the religious demands of the young that is novel, or is there anything to occasion legitimate fear? To answer the second question first: no man who believes in the real progress of the race ought to fear the young. Lack of faith in the young is simply lack of faith in human progress.
