Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barter or countertrade is the oldest form of trade--dating back to man's earliest history. During the past ten years, countertrade has become an increasingly important part of international trade. At the same time, interest in countertrade has been growing rapidly. This work, the product of an international conference held in the Spring of 1985, focuses on the managerial aspects of international countertrade. The heart of the book focuses upon such technical aspects of countertrade as financing, law, operations and strategy, and proposes the development of a marketable security for countertrade credits. Also considered are the facilitators of countertrade--countertrade traders, switch traders, and merchants, and accounting and tax aspects of countertrade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 2,00, Vienna University of Economics and Business , course: BWL des Aussenhandels - Grundkurs II, 18 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In a growing globalized world where cash flows and flows of funds are getting more complex one would expect businesses to be completed in seconds through electronic transactions, which most times is also the case. Nevertheless, the oldest form of trading and its numerous variations regain each day their importance in international trade. Countertrade has become an important element of the world economy, for all countries whether industrialized, emerging or developing since World War 2. Despite the importance the topic continues to gather, there is still no universally accepted definition of countertrade, neither on terminology, set procedures, documentation or volume of trade. Some say it amounts to as little as 5 percent of the world trade whereas others claim it represents as much as 35 percent and growing. The reason for this uncertainty is mainly due to the secrecy of MNCs and countries concerning this topic and to the lack of official statistics and specific national rules. Nevertheless, all authors agree about the importance of countertrade within the world trading system, with its share of the world market is steadily increasing and it becoming one important opportunity for doing international trade. The aim of this paper is to first to lay down the most common variations and definitions of this type of trade and then to focus on a specific form – industrial offsets. In the end the specific field of application, the concerned specific industries and examples will be discussed.

Book Synopsis Technology Offsets in International Defence Procurement by : Kogila Balakrishnan
Download or read book Technology Offsets in International Defence Procurement written by Kogila Balakrishnan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology offsets, a nonconventional international trade-financing tool, is used by governments (buyers) to obtain industrial and technological benefits from companies (sellers) as part of international procurement. Offsets deals involve billions of dollars and this practice exists in around 80 countries around the world. Though offsets is a popular practice in defence, it is increasingly gaining popularity in civil sectors. Offsets is often tainted by controversy and receives bad press. What then makes offsets popular? Governments claim that offsets delivers technology and knowledge transfer, skills in high technology sectors and employment, and offsets expands export opportunities through participation in OEM supply chains. For companies, offsets is mainly employed as a tool to obtain a competitive edge and win sales in international business. In the past, there have been mixed results of case studies on the impact of offsets successes and failures. Considering the mismanagement of globalisation, unfair trade agreements and current political and economic discontent, there is a stronger need for governments and companies to use vehicles such as offsets to create a relationship of trust and commitment for sustainable development. This book fills the gap in offsets and focuses on how to manage offsets more effectively by addressing issues of strategy, policy and implementation, technology management, governance and risk. Technology Offsets in International Defence Procurement is designed for those studying international procurement, international trade, international business, technology management, defence policy and industrial policy. This book will also be of interest to practitioners and policy makers in both government and industry.
