Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Count Robert of Paris, Vol. 1 Criticism has very little to do with Count Robert of Paris. The wonderful mental and bodily strength of Scott had been undermined before he wrote the tale and broke down as he was in the course of writing it. The romance is not a work of his normal self: ashes, indeed, there come of the old brightness, but we may almost go so far as to say that the book is not Scott's, not the work of the Scott we knew. For prao tical purposes, and even for some literary purposes, his mind was still available, but not for the purpose of serious imaginative composition. At furthest we may say that, if Scott, in these circumstances, could not write like himself, perhaps no other man could have written at all. The Editor has examined the manu script of the Reliquiae Trotcosienses, an anecdotic and historical catalogue of the Abbotsford collection, attempted by Scott as a relief from the labour of the novel. It is sadly evident that neither mentally nor bodily was he fit, at this time, for the toil of composi tion. But there was to be no rest for Sir Walter, except in the woollen.' He struggled on at his impos sible and honourable task. It is the character, the indomitable courage of the man which we are called on to applaud: literary criticisms were misapplied and out of place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parisians, Vol. 1 of 2 Never was a man more true to his calling of artist. To the last day of his life he went on ripen ing and hiving wisdom with each studious year. No hasty, slipshod work over disgraced his pen. Dearly as he loved fame, no literary success, however dazzling, deluded him into the belief that the prize was won, and that he might relapse into indolent security. It is also to his credit that in none of his works is the subject of religion treated but with the most scrupulous reverence and honor. In all of his writings there is manifeswd a genuine heartfelt sympathy with the spiritual cravings of our nature. No sneer at enthusiasm, no mockery of humanity, ever sullies his page; but, on the contrary, a convic tion that truth and fidelity are still to be found among men, that chivalry is not foolish, that ambi tion is not always selfish, and that there is a soul of goodness in things evil, permeates and colors all his romances. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Russian Cooking is a book that I highly recommend. Joyce Toomre has done a marvelous job of translating this valuable and fascinating source book. It's the Fanny Farmer and Isabella Beeton of Russia's 19th century." -Julia Child, Food Arts Joyce Toomre... has accomplished an enormous task, fully on a part with the original author's slave labor. Her extensive preface and her detailed and entertaining notes are marvelous." -Tatyana Tolstaya, New York Review of Books ... should become as much of a classic as the Russian original... dazzling and admirable expedition into Russia's kitchens and cuisine." -Slavic Review What a delightful discovery this is!... an astonishing and immensely appealing work that will serve adventurous readers and curious cooks." -Nahum Waxman, Owner, Kitchen Arts & Letters What a joy to be introduced to Russia's Joy of Cooking by way of a scholar as knowledgeable as Joyce Toomre, who tells us what it was like to be a young housewife in the days of Chekhov and Tolstoy, feasting in Butter Week before the Great Fast, making pirogs and kvass, hazel grouse souffle [acute accent over e] and 'Drunken' plums, gathering berries, pickling mushrooms. A rediscovery of pre-Bolshevik times." -Betty H. Fussell, author of I Hear America Cooking First published in 1861, this "bible" of Russian homemakers offered not only a compendium of recipes, but also instructions about such matters as setting up a kitchen, managing servants, shopping, and proper winter storage. Joyce Toomre has superbly translated and annotated over one thousand of the recipes and has written a thorough and fascinating introduction that discusses the history of Russian cuisine and summarizes Elena Molokhovets' advice on household management. A treasure trove for culinary historians, serous cooks and cookbook readers, and scholars of Russian history and culture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The never-before told story of how Napoleon's top brass escaped to America after Waterloo. Empire's Eagles is colorful, new, and an effectively unknown chapter in American history. In its center is the mystery of whether Napoleon's "Bravest of the brave," Marshal Ney, cheated a firing squad to escape under an alias and reinvent himself in America. At sunset on June 18, 1815 Napoleon Bonaparte was in desperate flight from the battlefield at Waterloo. Racing to reach Paris, he abandoned on the road his armored coach and Imperial necessaire containing a fortune in precious gems and cash. Would he stand and fight again or flee to the United States of America? On the run and with his options dwindling by the day, Napoleon came within one hour of secretly slipping to America on a Baltimore privateer with the active collusion of the United States consul in Bordeaux. Empire's Eagles tells the details of this story for the first time ever.
