Book excerpt: It is asserted that domestic slavery has always been a constructive social element: history shows that it has always been destructive. History authoritatively establishes the fact that slavery is the most corroding social disease, and one, too, which acts most fatally on the slaveholding element in a community. Not disease, but health, is the normal condition of man's physical organism: not oppression but freedom is the normal condition of human society. The laws of history are as absolute as the laws of nature or the laws of hygiene. Contents: Egyptians Phœnicians Libyans Carthaginians Hebrews, or Beni-Israel Nabatheans Assyrians and Babylonians Medes and Persians Aryas—Hindus Chinese Greeks Romans—Republicans Romans—Political Slaves Christianity: its Churches and Creeds Gauls Germans Longobards—Italians Franks—French Britons, Anglo-Saxons, English Slavi, Slavonians, Slaves, Russians

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book are recounted for the first time the Civil War actions and opinions of Count Adam Gurowski, the one man Lincoln recognized as a possible assassin. The controlling powers in Europe had once considered him one of the most dangerous and subversive influences on the continent. His long experience as journalist, propagandist, and observer of public policy equipped him to turn in a masterly, if unconventional, performance as a self-appointed critic of the Lincoln administration. He did not need to use a keyhole for collecting information, because he knew everyone of political and military significance in wartime Washington. He simply walked in, sat at other men's desks, openly rummaged through their papers, and at other times extended unsolicited advice or impetuously broke into statesmen's conferences. He participated regularly in oral and written propaganda efforts to make or break the careers of political and military personalities. He frequently gave orders and warnings to Radical Republican leaders, and frequently his orders were obeyed and his warnings regarded. -- Preface.

Excerpt: "Of all the peoples known in history, the American people most readily forget yesterday; I publish this Diary in order to recall yesterday to the memory of my countrymen. In this Diary I recorded what I heard and saw myself, and what I heard from others, on whose veracity I can implicitly rely. I recorded impressions as immediately as I felt them. A life almost wholly spent in the tempests and among the breakers of our times has taught me that the first impressions are the purest and the best."

Book excerpt: Count Adam de Gurowski (1805-1866) was a Polish journalist, essayist, reformer, historian and translator. He studied philosophy under Hegel at the University of Berlin and later graduated from the University of Heidelberg in 1823. In 1844 he moved to Germany and then to Switzerland, where he taught political economics at the University of Bern. He joined the editorial staff of Horace Greeley's New York Tribune for which he wrote articles favourable to the Russian cause during the Crimean War. He also wrote for the New American Cyclopaedia and later submitted work to the Atlantic Monthly. His keen political mind and devotion to the abolitionist movement led de Gurowski to support the Union war effort by translating articles in foreign newspapers for the Secretary of State. His works include: The Turkish Question (1854), Russia as it is (1854), A Year of the War (1855), America and Europe (1857) and Diary (1862-6).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was more than coincidence—indeed, it was all but fate—that the lives and thoughts of Abraham Lincoln and Walt Whitman should converge during the terrible years of the Civil War. Kindred spirits despite their profound differences in position and circumstance, Lincoln and Whitman shared a vision of the democratic character that sprang from the deepest part of their being. They had read or listened to each other’s words at crucial turning points in their lives. Both were utterly transformed by the tragedy of the war. In this radiant book, poet and biographer Daniel Mark Epstein tracks the parallel lives of these two titans from the day that Lincoln first read Leaves of Grass to the elegy Whitman composed after Lincoln’s assassination in 1865. Drawing on the rich trove of personal and newspaper accounts, diary records, and lore that has accumulated around both the president and the poet, Epstein structures his double portrait in a series of dramatic, atmospheric scenes. Whitman, though initially skeptical of the Illinois Republican, became enthralled when Lincoln stopped in New York on the way to his first inauguration. During the war years, after Whitman moved to Washington to minister to wounded soldiers, the poet’s devotion to the president developed into a passion bordering on obsession. “Lincoln is particularly my man, and by the same token, I am Lincoln’s man.” As Epstein shows, the influence and reverence flowed both ways. Lincoln had been deeply immersed in Whitman’s verse when he wrote his incendiary “House Divided” speech, and Whitman remained an influence during the darkest years of the war. But their mutual impact went beyond the intellectual. Epstein brings to life the many friends and contacts his heroes shared—Lincoln’s debonair private secretary John Hay, the fiery abolitionist senator Charles Sumner, the mysterious and possibly dangerous Polish Count Gurowski—as he unfolds the story of their legendary encounters in New York City and especially Washington during the war years. Blending history, biography, and a deeply informed appreciation of Whitman’s verse and Lincoln’s rhetoric, Epstein has written a masterful and original portrait of two great men and the era they shaped through the vision they held in common.
