Book excerpt: The results of the study produced several implications for counseling. First, if counselor educators help counselors in training become more aware of counselor self-efficacy, the students can better understand how the construct affects their anxiety, their comfort with expanding or improving their clinical skills and the approach they take to a client, session or treatment plan. A second implication is that using an embedded, rich-media learning environment may help the counselors in training to develop their clinical skills. The results of this study imply that utilizing technology and discussions beyond the classroom is beneficial for (a) increasing the students' counselor self-efficacy, (b) normalizing the emotions the students may experience and (c) improving the methods for development through vicarious learning. Also, as technology continues to evolve and as education continues to adapt by integrating technology into the classrooms, counselor educators should begin exploring how to best use technology to teach students during practicum. Traditionally, based on the nature of counseling, practicum has been an interpersonal experience, but the results of the current study imply the methods of extending learning beyond the traditional class time is beneficial. Finally, as counselor educators strive to increase students' counselor self-efficacy early in practicum, in an environment that contains anxiety and self-doubt (Bernard & Goodyear, 2009; Cashwell & Dooley, 2001) using vicarious learning through video and online discussions can assist in accomplishing the goal.

Book excerpt: Purpose The purpose of this study was to fill a gap in the literature by examining the relationship between dogmatism, locus of control, counselor self-efficacy, and counselor theoretical orientation in a sample of master0́9s level practicum students. Method A total of 45 master0́9s practicum students completed a series of four instruments, the DOG Scale, the Internal Control Index, the Counselor Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Theoretical Orientation Profile Scale-Revised. Data were analyzed using quantitative analysis. Cronbach0́9s alphas were computed to answer the first research question, to determine if the instruments were reliable for the sample. A series of Pearson product-moment correlations were used to answer the second research question. This question addressed whether there were any relationships between dogmatism, locus of control, or perceived counselor self-efficacy. Finally, a MANOVA was conducted to answer research question three. The MANOVA was used to see if there were statistically significant differences in respondents0́9 levels of dogmatism, locus of control, and perceived counselor self-efficacy based on their theoretical orientation. Results The analyses revealed that the instruments were reliable for the sample. Also the Pearson0́9s product correlations suggested a large, positive correlation between locus of control and perceived counselor self-efficacy. Both samples received equal statistical analyses. Overall, the results suggest that counselor education practicum or internship student self-disclosure was not able to explain their selfefficacy. Furthermore, when the participants’ perception of the supervisory working alliance was added to their level of self-disclosure, the statistical results were mixed depending on the sample used.

Book excerpt: What a counselor-in-training believes about his or her ability directly impacts his/her persistence and ability to perform a task successfully. Evidence shows a link between academic factors and counselor self-efficacy with trainees who perform better academically being more confident in their ability to counsel. In addition, there is a strong probability that part of a trainee's belief system and subsequent behavior choices are connected with his or her total wellness. Having a higher self-efficacy can improve counselor competence and give insight into the gatekeeping process. Because there is limited research to address academic factors and total wellness of counseling self-efficacy (CSE) of counselors-in-training (CIT), this study concentrates on the gap in the educational and counseling literature. This research documents the extent to which these variables can contribute to the prediction of CSE of CIT. Specifically, academic factors, wellness and CSE of CIT were assessed across randomly selected CACREP accredited master's-level counseling programs. Liaisons were contacted, provided a description of the study, and invited to ask any questions related to their students' involvement in the study. Those who agreed to allow participation in their program were asked to forward an email introducing the study and requesting participation to counseling practicum and internship students at their institution. In the email, potential participants were provided with directions for accessing and completing the survey, contact information for the researcher, and approximate deadline for completion. Each participant was asked to complete a consent form, a demographic questionnaire, the 5F-Wel, and the Counselor Activity Self Efficacy Scale. There were 2 hypotheses considered in this study. First, a significant relationship will exist between academic factors and the CSE of CIT. This hypothesis was not supported. A significant relationship will exist between the total wellness score and the CSE of CIT. Regression analysis revealed that the complete model including all 5 predictor variables did not significantly predict CSE of CIT. This model accounted for only 6 % of the variance of CSE of CIT. Thus, this hypothesis was not supported. These findings indicate the need for additional research to examine which factors contribute to the CSE of CIT.

Book excerpt: Self-efficacy, a central component of Bandura's social cognitive theory (SCT), is an important construct in the realm of therapist development and has been associated with client outcome. Researchers have found that some of the strongest predictors of counselor self-efficacy are level of experience, level of training, state anxiety, and trait anxiety. Missing from this body of literature, however, is an understanding of how the educational format of training (i.e., cohort versus non-cohort) impacts counselor self-efficacy. Because cohort membership has been associated with professional confidence and self-esteem, it was hypothesized that educational format would contribute significant variance to counselor self-efficacy scores. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that those enrolled in cohort programs would demonstrate significantly more counselor self-efficacy and significantly less state anxiety as compared to students enrolled in non-cohort programs. Finally, it was hypothesized there would be a significant relationship between practicum or "internship" status and counselor self-efficacy given that self-efficacy tends to increase with performance accomplishments. One hundred and sixty master's level CACREP-approved counseling programs were randomly selected for inclusion in this study in addition to two programs at Western Michigan University. Participants completed the Counselor Self-Estimate Inventory (COSE), the Counselor Activity Self-Efficacy Scales (CASES), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and a background questionnaire. Of the 150 electronic surveys initiated, 104 met the inclusionary criteria. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that educational format did not contribute significant variance to counselor trainees' self-efficacy scores above and beyond the variance explained by level of experience, level of training, state anxiety, and trait anxiety. ANOVA analyses revealed no difference in self-efficacy or state anxiety between students enrolled in cohort versus non-cohort educational formats. However, there was a significant relationship between practicum or "internship" status and self-efficacy as predicted. Level of experience, level of training, state anxiety, and trait anxiety accounted for 44.3% of the variance in COSE scores and 36.7% of the variance in CASES scores. The findings further support that counselor educators and supervisors must work to ensure students are able to reduce and/or control their anxiety, receive proper training, and acquire sufficient practicum experiences.

Spirituality is a construct that has been receiving more attention in counseling over the last fifteen to twenty years. More counselors and educators are affirming its place and value in the counseling relationship. Yet, there is a disparity between this and what counselors-in-training are being taught regarding spirituality, its value to clients and counselors, and its role in the counseling relationship. Very little research has been done examining spirituality and its relationship to counseling students level of confidence and competence in their work---their self-efficacy. This study investigated the relationship of perceived spirituality to counseling self-efficacy for graduate counseling students in faith-based and secular institutions. Additionally, the researcher studied the relationship of spirituality and counseling self-efficacy to the following demographic variables: age, gender, graduate course hours completed, and practicum versus internship status. The results from a sample of 135 students demonstrated a relationship between spirituality and counseling self-efficacy for students in faith-based and secular universities. The four demographic variables studied---age, gender, graduate course hours completed, and practicum versus internship status---showed a relationship with counseling self-efficacy but not spirituality. Implications for counseling pedagogy and clinical work are offered. Areas of future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate how clinical mental health counseling practicum students and practicum instructors use per session assessment feedback with clients they served at a university counseling center. Per session assessment and feedback has been shown to increase the treatment outcomes that counselors achieve while treating clients, and has been shown to reduce drop out rates for clients who are underperforming during counseling (Lambert et al., 2001). This study used a mixed methods research design that was predominantly a qualitative multiple case study design. The researcher interviewed clinical mental health counseling practicum students and practicum instructors that had used the per session assessment and feedback program over the course of a semester with clients at a university counseling center. The quantitative analysis of the counseling center clientele showed that clients left counseling with significantly less symptomology then when they appeared, measured by the pre counseling to post counseling Outcome Questionnaire 45 (OQ 45) scores. This finding suggested that clients at the counseling center found the counseling they received by the clinical mental health counseling practicum students to be effective. The qualitative analysis of the interview data collected from the clinical mental health counseling practicum students and practicum instructors revealed the following themes: (a) perception of feedback, which included the sub themes of uncertainty, integration, and clients experience of feedback (b) application and use, which included the subthemes of process of using feedback, treatment planning, and supervision (c) feedback mechanisms, which included the sub themes of visual cue of client performance, red warning flags, critical item status areas, and tracking effectiveness, (d) discrepant feedback, and (e) suggestions for improvement. This study included rich description about how clinical mental health counseling practicum students and practicum instructors incorporated the use of the feedback system, and found that per session assessment and feedback had a beneficial impact on practice. It was discovered that the use of the feedback program impacted treatment planning, and supervision positively, and created a negative feedback loop that appeared to help decrease anxiety and increase counselor self-efficacy in the clinical mental health counseling practicum students.

Book excerpt: Recent research in counselor training has focused on the difficulties and challenges facing counseling practitioners that result in high stress, burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and counselor impairment. The American Counseling Association's (ACA) Code of Ethics has addressed the ethical issues inherent in counselor impairment. Further, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) has focused on the development of counselors that will assist them in being resilient to workplace stressors. Wellness is a theoretically based construct that holds much promise for bolstering the resilience of pre-service counselors. In addition, counselor self-efficacy has been linked to greater advocacy for self and others, the use of higher order counseling skills, greater problem solving practice, and more self-regulated, ethical decision making. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between counselor self-efficacy and counselor wellness. A total of 88 participants completed both the Five Factor Wellness Evaluation of Lifestyle Inventory and the Counseling Self-Efficacy Scale. Demographic and descriptive statistics were included along with a Multiple Regression Analysis. Results did not indicate a statistically significant relationship. Potential limitations, implications for counselor educators, and future research directions were elucidated.

A web-based survey was developed with the questions from the Counseling Self-Efficacy Inventory (COSE) (Larson et al., 1992) and 45 (N = 45) participants took the survey online. Participants were students enrolled and taking a practicum or internship class in a counseling program with a training clinic (WTC) or in a counseling program without a clinic (WTTC). Mann-Whitney Wilcoxon test, a non-parametric statistical test, was used due to the small sample size to analyze the differences between the groups. Analyses revealed that there is no statistically significant difference between the groups.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the implementation level of comprehensive school counseling programs at internship sites and school counseling interns' self-efficacy. Other variables were also examined in combination with school counseling program implementation including, prior teaching experience, prior mental health experience, age, and prior professional K12 experience. A total of 61 school counseling interns from CACREP school counseling programs who were in their last semester of internship were included in the final analysis. These subjects completed two instruments, the School Counseling Program Implementation Survey, which measured program implementation, and the School Counseling Self-Efficacy Scale, which measured school counselor self-efficacy. The data were analyzed using correlation analysis and multiple linear regressions. With the removal of outliers, school counseling programming as measured by the SCPIS correlated to school counseling interns' self-efficacy. Regression analyses revealed that the SCPIS and the demographic factors differentially predicted school counseling interns' self-efficacy. The results are discussed in detail herein. Implications of the findings along with the limitations of the study are presented. Recommendations for future research are also described.
