Book excerpt: The aim of this research study was to understand the counselor characteristics of counselor-in-training (CIT) level of anxiety and counselor self-efficacy (CSE) in regard to the establishment of the therapeutic working alliance. Research has repeatedly found that the therapeutic working alliance is the golden thread throughout therapy that leads to successful positive outcomes. However, the effects of CIT level of anxiety and CSE have yet to be examined in the development of the therapeutic working alliance. The current study utilized a non-experimental, quantitative design to explore the relationship between CIT level of anxiety, CSE and the therapeutic working alliance. The results found no significant relationships between CIT level of anxiety, CSE, and the therapeutic working alliance. The clinical implications, limitations and future research recommendations for counselor educators and supervisors are discussed.

First, if counselor educators help counselors in training become more aware of counselor self-efficacy, the students can better understand how the construct affects their anxiety, their comfort with expanding or improving their clinical skills and the approach they take to a client, session or treatment plan. A second implication is that using an embedded, rich-media learning environment may help the counselors in training to develop their clinical skills. The results of this study imply that utilizing technology and discussions beyond the classroom is beneficial for (a) increasing the students' counselor self-efficacy, (b) normalizing the emotions the students may experience and (c) improving the methods for development through vicarious learning. Also, as technology continues to evolve and as education continues to adapt by integrating technology into the classrooms, counselor educators should begin exploring how to best use technology to teach students during practicum. Traditionally, based on the nature of counseling, practicum has been an interpersonal experience, but the results of the current study imply the methods of extending learning beyond the traditional class time is beneficial. Finally, as counselor educators strive to increase students' counselor self-efficacy early in practicum, in an environment that contains anxiety and self-doubt (Bernard & Goodyear, 2009; Cashwell & Dooley, 2001) using vicarious learning through video and online discussions can assist in accomplishing the goal.

In 2015, approximately 43 million Americans over the age of 18 had experienced a mental health issue within the past year (SAMHSA, 2015). Recognizing that there are a growing number of mental health counselors entering the field each year (CACREP, 2016; U.S. Department of Labor, 2017), it is important that counselor training programs take steps to ensure that trainees are prepared to provide competent counseling services. Researchers and scholars (Auxier, Hughes, & Kline, 2003; Greason & Cashwell, 2009; Skovholt & McCarthy, 1988; Skovholt & Ronnestad, 2003) have determined many factors that influence counselor development. One such factor, counselor self-efficacy (CSE), seems imperative to counselor development (Goreczny, Hamilton, Lubinski, & Pasquinelli, 2015; Kozina, Grabovari, De Stefano, & Drapeau, 2010; Larson & Daniels, 1998; Lent et al., 2009; Lent, Hill, & Hoffman, 2003). Further, attachment anxiety and avoidance may be important in the development of CSE. Accordingly, it is important to understand the influence of attachment anxiety and avoidance on trainee's counselor self-efficacy during training because trainees with elevated attachment-related anxiety and/or avoidance may experience negative consequences on their development as counselors. Mindfulness training however, may be key to increasing CSE and buffering the effects of attachment anxiety and/or avoidance. Researchers have examined the relationship between attachment and counselor self-efficacy (Marmarosh et al., 2013; Smothers, 2009), mindfulness and counselor self-efficacy (Greason & Cashwell, 2009), and attachment strategies and mindfulness (Caldwell & Shaver, 2013; Davis, Morris, & Drake, 2016; Walsh, Balint, Smolira, Fredericksen, & Madsen, 2009). To date, however, researchers had not considered how the three may interact. The purpose of this study was to address an important gap in the counselor training literature by examining whether mindfulness moderates the relationships between attachment-related anxiety and avoidance and CSE among trainees. The researcher implemented a correlational design, using multiple regression and multiple regression with the interaction term in order to explore the relationships among attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance, mindfulness, and counselor self-efficacy. Bivariate correlations were found among several of the variable including mindfulness and CSE, attachment avoidance and CSE, mindfulness and attachment anxiety, and mindfulness and attachment avoidance. Although mindfulness did not emerge as a predicted moderator variable findings from this study support previous researchers findings that mindfulness is related to CSE. Book excerpt: Self-efficacy, a central component of Bandura's social cognitive theory (SCT), is an important construct in the realm of therapist development and has been associated with client outcome. Researchers have found that some of the strongest predictors of counselor self-efficacy are level of experience, level of training, state anxiety, and trait anxiety. Missing from this body of literature, however, is an understanding of how the educational format of training (i.e., cohort versus non-cohort) impacts counselor self-efficacy. Because cohort membership has been associated with professional confidence and self-esteem, it was hypothesized that educational format would contribute significant variance to counselor self-efficacy scores. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that those enrolled in cohort programs would demonstrate significantly more counselor self-efficacy and significantly less state anxiety as compared to students enrolled in non-cohort programs. Finally, it was hypothesized there would be a significant relationship between practicum or "internship" status and counselor self-efficacy given that self-efficacy tends to increase with performance accomplishments. One hundred and sixty master's level CACREP-approved counseling programs were randomly selected for inclusion in this study in addition to two programs at Western Michigan University. Participants completed the Counselor Self-Estimate Inventory (COSE), the Counselor Activity Self-Efficacy Scales (CASES), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and a background questionnaire. Of the 150 electronic surveys initiated, 104 met the inclusionary criteria. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that educational format did not contribute significant variance to counselor trainees' self-efficacy scores above and beyond the variance explained by level of experience, level of training, state anxiety, and trait anxiety. ANOVA analyses revealed no difference in self-efficacy or state anxiety between students enrolled in cohort versus non-cohort educational formats. However, there was a significant relationship between practicum or "internship" status and self-efficacy as predicted. Level of experience, level of training, state anxiety, and trait anxiety accounted for 44.3% of the variance in COSE scores and 36.7% of the variance in CASES scores. The findings further support that counselor educators and supervisors must work to ensure students are able to reduce and/or control their anxiety, receive proper training, and acquire sufficient practicum experiences.

Book excerpt: Due to the complexity of the counseling process, counselors-in-training often experience performance anxiety when entering the counseling profession. Research shows that higher counseling self-efficacy (the belief in oneself to perform counseling skills successfully) helps decrease performance anxiety. Further, a strong supervisory working alliance is the most effective intervention to increase counseling-self-efficacy. However, there are barriers to building a strong supervisory working alliance including high performance anxiety and low counseling self-efficacy as well as the dual nature of the supervisor's role as mentor and evaluator. This study introduces an equine assisted learning supervision intervention for counselors-in-training. This experiential learning intervention provides an opportunity for counselor self-exploration and growth in a non-evaluative, nonjudgmental, novel situation. The population of interest was counselors-in-training enrolled in CACREP counseling programs. The purposive sample included 20 students enrolled in a theories counseling course or a practicum skills course. The study used a quasi-experimental design where participants completed a Demographic Questionnaire, the Counseling Self-Estimate Inventory, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Supervisory Working Alliance-Trainee Form. Participants were randomly selected to be in a treatment group, which received a one hour individual equine assisted learning supervision intervention or in the control group, which received class as usual. Six research questions examined the main effect of the EAL-S intervention on counseling self-efficacy, the main effect of the EAL-S intervention on performance anxiety, the relationship between counseling self-efficacy and performance anxiety, the correlation of the quality of supervisory working alliance with counseling self-efficacy, the correlation of the quality of the supervisory working alliance with performance anxiety, and the correlation of the supervisory working alliance with the effectiveness of the EAL-S intervention. A split-plot MANOVA was performed to analyze the first two questions and revealed a significant main effect of the EAL-S intervention on counseling self-efficacy. Non-significance was found in the main effect of the EAL-S intervention on performance anxiety. Pearson Product Moment Correlations were performed for the remaining questions. A significant positive correlation was found between counseling self-efficacy and performance anxiety. No significance was found in the correlation of the quality of the supervisory working alliance with counseling self-efficacy, performance anxiety, or the effectiveness of the EAL-S intervention. Findings support that a one hour EAL-S intervention can improve counselors'-in-training counseling self-efficacy and improve their tolerance for performance anxiety. These results have implications for counselors-in-training, supervisors, and counselor educators.

Thus, the goal of this study was to examine the personal growth factors and the inhibiting factor of anxiety through the lens of social cognitive theory and Bowen's theory of differentiation of self in predicting counselor self-efficacy in counseling trainees. Personal growth initiative, differentiation of self, experience with personal counseling, and anxiety correlated with counselor trainees' beliefs in their ability to effectively counsel clients. Two aspects of differentiation of self-- Emotional Cutoff and Fusion with Others--partially mediated the relationship between personal growth initiative and counseling self-efficacy. Training implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Counselor educators are tasked with the duty of preparing counselors-in-training (CITs) to be competent clinicians. In order for counseling professionals to be considered competent clinicians, they must demonstrate competence in three domains: (a) knowledge, (b) skills, and (c) behavior (ACA, 2014; CACREP, 2009). The goal of this study was to contribute to further understanding the most effective instructional approach to facilitating role play while instructing pre-practicum counseling students. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of virtual simulation training on the development of basic counseling skills, the immersion experience, levels of anxiety, and levels of counselor self-efficacy (CSE) among CITs using student-to-avatar and student-to-student role play. A quasi-experimental research design was used to investigate the effect of the treatment on the constructs. The results of this study found that there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups across all four constructs. A spilt-plot analysis of variance, trend analysis, and repeated measures between factor multivariate analysis of variance were used to analyze the data. The results of this study indicated that exposure to virtual simulation training did not affect the development of basic counseling skills, immersion experience, counselor self-efficacy, and anxiety. The results also showed that virtual simulation did not hinder the development of basic counseling skills, or negatively influence immersion experience, counselor self-efficacy or anxiety.

A web-based survey was developed with the questions from the Counseling Self-Efficacy Inventory (COSE) (Larson et al., 1992) and 45 (N = 45) participants took the survey online. Participants were students enrolled and taking a practicum or internship class in a counseling program with a training clinic (WTC) or in a counseling program without a clinic (WTTC). Mann-Whitney Wilcoxon test, a non-parametric statistical test, was used due to the small sample size to analyze the differences between the groups. Analyses revealed that there is no statistically significant difference between the groups.
