Book excerpt: The literature on nonsexual boundary crossings in academic relationships has produced mixed results (Bowman, Hatley & Bowman, 1995) and utilized primarily undergraduate (Holmes, Rupert, Ross & Shapera, 1999; Owen & Zwahr-Castro, 2007) or master's level samples (Kolbert et al., 2002). The focus of this study was to enhance the literature base by assessing doctoral level, counseling psychology faculty and student perceptions of nonsexual boundary crossings. In addition, the role of power was assessed utilizing the Approach-Inhibition Theory of Power (Keltner, Gruenfeld & Anderson, 2003) to help explain potential differences. A total of 135 counseling psychology faculty members (n = 62) and students (n = 73) participated in the current study. To assess the role of power, five propositions of the Approach-Inhibition Theory of Power were examined. These included: sensitivity to rewards and punishments, engagement in automatic versus controlled thought processes, and perceptions of inappropriate behaviors. Participants read four vignettes, which assessed supervisor/supervisee, mentor/protégé, advisor/advisee and co-authorship relationships. Each vignette assessed degree of appropriateness, comfort level, and degree to which various behaviors were considered boundary crossings. Finally, participants were asked to provide their definition of nonsexual boundary crossings within the academic relationship in an open-ended question format. The results of the present study did not fully support the Approach-Inhibition Theory of Power with this sample. Mixed results were found with faculty and student perceptions of appropriateness, comfort, and nonsexual boundary crossings, with the most differences noted in degree of comfort. Overall, faculty members and students appeared less clear on how to navigate co-authorship roles. Additionally, most participants defined a nonsexual boundary crossing using a risk management approach, suggesting that boundary crossings should be avoided. However, this definition was not congruent with participant ratings on vignette behaviors, indicating the complexity to understanding nonsexual boundary crossings in academic relationships.

This dissertation examines the experience and reality of doctoral psychology students' perceived stress levels among specific years of a clinical psychology five-year doctoral program at one university. The purpose of this quantitative study is to investigate any differences of student's perceived stress and sample characteristics experienced by year in the clinical doctoral psychology program. The amount of perceived stress a psychology doctoral student experiences may depend on differing variables. Psychosocial factors such as education, work, family, and relationships can detract from or contribute to the presence of either positive or negative stress during these years. Factors that may cause distress may also cause eustress. Doctoral students' response to stressors may impact physiological, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions. A critical issue concerning stress among doctoral students is its effect on learning and whether students will complete their doctoral program. The goal of this study is to increase knowledge of doctoral students' quality of life during the doctoral process and determine the impact of stress on academic achievement. The findings of this study show that there is no relationship between a set of demographic predictor variables (gender, age, marital/parental status, and year in doctoral program) and the level of stress due to academic concerns, family/financial concerns, or environmental concerns for doctoral students, however, a significant relationship was found between these same predictor variables and level of stress as measured by the Demand and Coping Scale. This study's results may contribute to greater understanding and support from program faculty, and help doctoral students set realistic priorities for balancing study, work and family, and reduce doctoral program attrition rates.

In reaction to this shift, it is important that research examines the ethical implications of online behaviors. The current study examined the online practices of graduate students in the mental health field and generated prediction models for online client searches and best practices in informed consent and online disclosure. The sample consisted of 316 graduate students in counseling, clinical, and school programs. Of those with clinical experience, a third had utilized the Internet to find information about their client. Progress in the participants' program, as measured by credits completed or in progress, and years of social networking experience were positively related to online client searches. The vast majority (over 80%) of individuals who conducted an online search did not obtain informed consent prior to the search. Curiosity was the most frequent reason given for conducting a client search. Previous professional discussions and belief that information online is private were not significant predictors of obtaining informed consent. The final analysis examined disclosure of client information and found that lower scores on ethical decision-making and years of social networking experience predicted online disclosure. This study is an important step in understanding the implications of the intersection of technology use, ethics, and clinical practice of graduate mental health professionals.
