Book excerpt: In this cinematic thriller set in the Pacific Northwest, two sisters fight for survival after a natural disaster. In the shadow of Mount Hood, sixteen-year-old Tennant is checking rabbit traps with her eight-year-old sister Sophie when the girls are suddenly overcome by a strange vibration rising out of the forest, building in intensity until it sounds like a deafening crescendo of screams. From out of nowhere, their father sweeps them up and drops them through a trapdoor into a storm cellar. But the sound only gets worse . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable symposium arranged by Bruce L. Welch and Annemarie S. Welch for the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston, Massachusetts at the end of the year 1969 was devoted to the physiological effects of audible sound. Dr. Welch and his wife were able to bring together a distinguished group of scientists from all parts of the world. It was very remarkable to be able to discuss the physiological aspects of noise with representative scientists from Israel, France, Germany, Hungary, Russia, Australia, Canada and Argentina. Dr. and Mrs. Welch ran the meeting in a delightful manner and continued to maintain interest and enthusiasm. Now the results of the conference are available. It is to be hoped that this volume will find wide interest and attention. We must differentiate noise from sound. Noise is unpleasant, unwanted or intolerable sound. On the other hand, even ordinary sound may at times be unpleasant, simply because we are not con ditioned to it. The general impression that one gets from reading the various reports on the physiological effects of noise is bad. It's a pollutant that we can each individually reduce, and maybe we can have a great enough effect socially so that we can significantly lower the noise levels which may result in considerable harm to us. It is interesting that noise as a pollutant has only recently attracted attention.

Book excerpt: Sound Art offers the first comprehensive introduction to sound art written for undergraduate students. Bridging and blending aspects of the visual and sonic arts, modern sound art first emerged in the early 20th century and has grown into a thriving and varied field. In 13 thematic chapters, this book enables students to clearly grasp both the concepts behind this unique area of art, and its history and practice. Each chapter begins with an exploration of key ideas and theories, followed by an in-depth discussion of selected relevant works, both classic and current. Drawing on a broad, diverse range of examples, and firmly interdisciplinary, this book will be essential reading for anyone studying or teaching the theory, history, appreciation, or practice of sound art.

It starts with an introduction to noise and vibration problems; transfer of structural-borne noise and airborne noise to interior body; key techniques for body noise and vibration control; and noise and vibration control during vehicle development. The book then goes on to cover all the noise and vibration issues relating to the automotive body, including: overall body structure; local body structure; sound package; excitations exerted on the body and transfer functions; wind noise; body sound quality; body squeak and rattle; and the vehicle development process for an automotive body. Vehicle noise and vibration is one of the most important attributes for modern vehicles, and it is extremely important to understand and solve NVH problems. Noise and Vibration Control of Automotive Body offers comprehensive coverage of automotive body noise and vibration analysis and control, making it an excellent guide for body design engineers and testing engineers. Covers all the noise and vibration issues relating to the automotive body Features a thorough set of tables, illustrations, photographs, and examples Introduces automotive body structure and noise and vibration problems Pulls together the diverse topics of body structure, sound package, sound quality, squeak and rattle, and target setting Noise and Vibration Control of Automotive Body is a valuable reference for engineers, designers, researchers, and graduate students in the fields of automotive body design and NVH.
