Book Synopsis Resistance and Survival by : Ann González
Download or read book Resistance and Survival written by Ann González and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her analysis of some of the most interesting and important children’s literature from Central America and the Caribbean, Ann González uses postcolonial narrative theory to expose and decode what marginalized peoples say when they tell stories to their children—and how the interpretations children give these stories today differ from the ways they have read them in the past. González reads against the grain, deconstructing and critiquing dominant discourses to reveal consistent narrative patterns throughout the region that have helped children maneuver in a world dominated by powerful figures—from parents to agents of social control, political repression, and global takeover. Many of these stories are in some way lessons in resistance and survival in a world where “the toughest kid on the block,” often an outsider, demands that a group of children “play or pay,” on his terms. González demonstrates that where traditional strategies have proposed the model of the “trickster” or the “paradoxically astute fool,” to mock the pretensions of the would-be oppressor, new trends indicate that the region’s children—and those who write for them—show increasing interest in playing the game on their own terms, getting to know the Other, embracing difference, and redefining their identity and role within the new global culture. Resistance and Survival emphasizes the hope underlying this contemporary children’s literature for a world in which all voices can be heard and valued—the hope of an authentic happy ending.

Book Synopsis Caribbean Children's Literature, Volume 1 by : Betsy Nies
Download or read book Caribbean Children's Literature, Volume 1 written by Betsy Nies and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2023-05-18 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by María V. Acevedo-Aquino, Consuella Bennett, Florencia V. Cornet, Stacy Ann Creech, Zeila Frade, Melissa García Vega, Ann González, Louise Hardwick, Barbara Lalla, Megan Jeanette Myers, Betsy Nies, Karen Sanderson-Cole, Karen Sands-O’Connor, Geraldine Elizabeth Skeete, and Aisha T. Spencer The world of Caribbean children’s literature finds its roots in folktales and storytelling. As countries distanced themselves from former colonial powers post-1950s, the field has taken a new turn that emerges not just from writers within the region but also from those of its diaspora. Rich in language diversity and history, contemporary Caribbean children’s literature offers a window into the ongoing representations of not only local realities but also the fantasies that structure the genre itself. Young adult literature entered the region in the 1970s, offering much-needed representations of teenage voices and concerns. With the growth of local competitions and publishing awards, the genre has gained momentum, providing a new field of scholarly analyses. Similarly, the field of picture books has also deepened. Caribbean Children's Literature, Volume 1: History, Pedagogy, and Publishing includes general coverage of children’s literary history in the regions where the four major colonial powers have left their imprint; addresses intersections between pedagogy and children’s literature in the Anglophone Caribbean; explores the challenges of producing and publishing picture books; and engages with local authors familiar with the terrain. Local writers come together to discuss writerly concerns and publishing challenges. In new interviews conducted for this volume, international authors Edwidge Danticat, Junot Díaz, and Olive Senior discuss their transition from writing for adults to creating picture books for children.

Download or read book Pura Vida Mae written by Buffie Biddle and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pura (pronounced poor-ah) Vida (pronounced veed-ah) literally translates to Pure Life. Mae (pronounced my) is Costa Rican slang for friend or pal (like our "dude"). Pura Vida Mae is the story of a serene and mellow young iguana by the name of Daniel who enjoys living his life and relaxing in the sunshine. As he goes about his day, he learns that a great many other animals in the jungle do not share his fondness for a laid-back life. Some of these animals question him, and others simply go about their business. Daniel does have some very nice friends, though, and they share his love for an uncomplicated life of peace. His friends do not all look like he does, but they do have a great deal in common. Daniel can be himself with his friends, and they love each other for that. The message of this story is to love yourself and each other for who you are. I intend for this story to teach that gentle lesson. I began to write Pura Vida Mae after my first visit to Costa Rica, where I fell in love with everything about this amazing country. This place made a huge impression on me as a nature and wildlife enthusiast and conservationist as well as an artist; the love of life in all of its forms so apparent here. "Pura Vida" is the national greeting of the Costa Rican people. It means everything from "hello" and "nice day" to "good-bye" and "safe trip." Buffie Biddle is an artist, a writer, a lover of nature and wildlife, a conservationist, an educator (formerly) and an aunt (to two amazing boys). She graduated with a degree in fine arts, minoring in special education. All of these things are contributing factors to her writing as well as her artwork. Buffie gets her greatest delight from being around wildlife. She enjoys watching animal behavior and loves all things that make each aspect of the natural world unique-each texture, shape, and color. From the very first experience Buffie had of Costa Rica (Tortuguero is her favorite place there as of yet), she felt constant joy at the presence of life there: flora, fauna, culture, life, warmth (not just the temperature, which is nice also), sights and sounds, even smells. She was inspired as an artist, and as a lover of the natural world and of people. Buffie worked with children for nearly twelve years. She addressed behavior needs, often focusing on socialization, specializing in children with autism and their siblings as well as potential friends. At times, Buffie's work with these students involved the use of stories and scripts tailor made to fit the individual child, focusing not only on his or her needs but also on his or her areas of interest. Making a lesson more interesting made treatment more enjoyable, successful and therapeutic for the student in the long run. Buffie applies this idea to her stories, of which Pura Vida Mae is the first completed.
