Book excerpt: This report considers what the appropriate role of employee assistance programs (EAPs) might be, with attention to their contributions to the prevention of alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems. The principal contribution to the cost-effectiveness of EAPs in dealing with mental health problems, especially alcoholism and other drug dependence is through prevention. EAPs are important components of comprehensive worksite AOD abuse prevention programs. Their effectiveness can be demonstrated in reducing chronic heavy drinking as the focus of socializing and recreation, and in providing increased social support and respect for the recovering alcoholic and other drug-dependent coworker. Stemming indirectly from the EAP's presence and impact, employers, employees, and the family and community at large can become more thoughtful, reasonable, and careful about the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs.

Book excerpt: Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) are worksite-based programs designed to help identify and facilitate the resolution of behavioral, health, and productivity problems that may adversely affect employees' well-being or job performance. Many cost-effectiveness studies indicate the value of EAP in dealing with alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems. This report reviews a wide range of these studies and presents data about EAP use for AOD-related problems. Includes an overview of EAP, and examines EAP and prevention, cost-effectiveness studies, long-term support and follow-up, supervisory training and impact, and findings on early intervention and prevention in EAP. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book brings together for the first time critical information about the evaluation of employee assistance programs. Although EAPs have existed for over 40 years, the assessment of their value has been fragmented. Contributors to this new volume--blending practical and academic insights--document concerns, address the newer issues and developments in the field of EAPs, and present case examples of actual evaluations. The range and diversity of topics reflect EAPs in transition, their growth patterns, evaluation needs, and evaluation methods. Overall, this important volume emphasizes that successful evaluations depend not only on methodological expertise but a consideration of much broader salient and societal issues.

Book excerpt: In both developed nations and the developing world, there is a clear trend towards addressing alcohol, tobacco, and other drug problems through health and social services. There are several persuasive arguments for this shift beyond pure economics, which include comorbidity, cost effectiveness, coordination of care and effectiveness. This is the first volume to pull together effective methods that can be used for addressing substance abuse through health and social service systems. It also integrates interventions for a range of drugs of abuse, rather than focusing on only one (such as alcohol). The book's international perspective also makes this a unique contribution to the existing literature.
