Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a study on the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in bridge inspections. A detailed literature review was conducted to assess and document the current state of knowledge on the use of UAS in structural inspections and related engineering applications. A particular focus was on related work done by various state DOTs. Given the technical specifications and findings documented in the literature review, an item-by -item review of bridge inspection manuals was then performed to assess which elements of a bridge inspection could potentially benefit from use of UAS. Additionally, various categories of UAS and payloads were evaluated for bridge inspection. A small multicopter UAS was acquired and used to collect ultra-high-definition video and still imagery of a large bridge in Independence, Oregon. The imagery was reviewed by project team members and ODOT bridge inspectors. The results of the Independence Bridge inspection are presented, along with recommendations for further work. The study identified several challenges on the use of UAS for bridge inspection, including the need to capture very high resolution imagery, and problems due to strong wind and poor lighting conditions.

This study aimed to create a robotic platform used to assist in the inspection process of the nation0́9s aging and deteriorating bridges. To this end, a multimodal inspection robot that utilized both flying and driving technologies, was designed, analyzed, and tested for aerial, traversing, and their transitional operability. The design, herein referred to as the 'BridgeBot', was evaluated both computationally and experimentally. A finite element model of the BridgeBot was established and analyzed under static loading scenarios to help determine stress distributions and locate areas of concern. The prototype BridgeBot was then tested in the laboratory to evaluate the drone structure and ability to perform to its design intent. During a bridge inspection, the BridgeBot would deploy as a multirotor UAV and fly to the underside of a bridge girder. It would then utilize its specifically designed clamping system with custom rollers to engage and traverse along the girder flange. This transition from flying to traversing mode may not only significantly save battery, making it feasible for the BridgeBot to operate for longer periods of time, but also provide a stable platform for various cameras and nondestructive evaluation devices to acquire quality data. Although the design focused on steel girder bridges, it may later be adjusted for concrete girder bridges. Initial test results indicated the feasibility of the BridgeBot to transition from flying to traversing mode. However, upon landing, some of the electrical wires secured to the bottom of the flexible rotor arms were detached due to significant arm deformations causing the propellers to dislodge the wire connection under impact loading"--Abstract, page iii.

In fact, numerous bridges classified as structurally deficient in the United States that require more attention and effort for maintenance activities can be inspected using drones in an efficient manner. The primary goal of this project was to evaluate drones as supplemental bridge inspection tools for bridges that present accessibility challenges for inspectors. To accomplish this goal, an extensive literature review and technical survey were initially conducted to gain knowledge of the state-of-the-art and practices and critical considerations that should be accounted for while conducting inspections. Also, analysis of the drones was conducted and the most suitable drone for bridge inspections was selected. To recognize the drone-enabled inspection efficiency, preliminary inspections were conducted for structural damage identification in three structures, including a reinforced masonry building and two pedestrian timber deck bridges. With the knowledge and techniques established during the preliminary inspections, a six-stage recommended bridge inspection protocol using the drone was proposed and applied to two in-service highway timber bridges, including a timber arch bridge and a three-span timber girder bridge in South Dakota. Through the acquisition and analysis of image and video data, the effectiveness of the drone platform was evaluated in terms of image quality, damage identification and quantification, and comparisons with results from traditional inspections conducted on the bridges. This study details drone-enabled inspection advantages and challenges and provides conclusions and recommendations for future work. A key finding demonstrated throughout this project was that different types of structural damage on the bridges were efficiently identified using the drone.

Book excerpt: The applications of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) for bridge inspection, with emphasis on under-bridge inspection and fatigue crack detection, were studied in this report. The potential benefits and challenges of using UAS for bridge inspection were identified through an extensive literature survey. The feasibility of using UAS for fatigue crack detection was studied by determining the minimum lighting, camera distance and environmental requirements for three UAS. The DJI Mavic UAS performed better than the others in both indoor and outdoor GPS-denied inspections. An in-service bridge in Ashton, Idaho was inspected using this UAS to find fatigue cracks. No fatigue crack, known or new, was detected in the UAS images but marker lines around the known fatigue cracks (drawn by the inspectors in previous inspections), concrete defects, and steel rust were detected. Thermography showed promising results for fatigue crack detection in a lab setting, but it was not feasible for UAS applications since it had to be performed using active thermography techniques to obtain adequate results. Additionally, image processing algorithms for autonomous detection of both concrete and fatigue cracks were successfully developed. These algorithms, especially for fatigue crack detection, require more images to perform better, but were demonstrated as feasible to aid in a real-time inspection. Inspections in semi-controlled conditions at the S-BRITE center showed that UAS assisted inspections can provide inspections similar, at-best, to human inspections.

Book excerpt: This book explores the economic and broader societal rationale for using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or “drone†? technologies as a complement to the current transport and logistics systems in several use cases in East Africa. The specific use cases examined include medical goods deliveries, food aid delivery, land mapping and risk assessment, agriculture, and transport and energy infrastructure inspection. Across these applications, the case for using UAVs is examined within the context of logistics objectives—total operating costs, speed, availability, and flexibility—as well as human, or societal, objectives. In the public health use case, as more low- and middle-income countries explore opportunities to improve efficiency and performance in their health supply chains and diagnostics networks, they face myriad choices about how best to use UAVs to improve product availability and public health outcomes and to reach the last mile. The high-level findings from this analysis are that, if examining commodity categories individually and looking exclusively at costs, delivery with UAVs in general is still more expensive for most categories. Although the cost is still higher, the most cost-effective use case examples include the transport of laboratory samples to selected destinations and delivery of life-saving items and blood. However, “layering†? several use cases can provide efficiencies and cost savings by allocating fixed costs across a greater number of flights and maximizing capacity and time utilization. From the perspective of public decision-makers, the cost effectiveness of UAVs cannot be analyzed without looking at the public health benefits, which may be substantial. Drone application in the other use cases examined in this book, such as mapping, risk assessment, and agriculture, is relatively more common than cargo drone operations, and the existing pilot initiatives in East Africa have delivered impressive results for speed and quality (precision). Food aid delivery by drones is still mostly at a planning, rather than implementation, stage. Drone applications are rapidly evolving, and several use cases could gain impact and scale over the coming years.

Book excerpt: The sheer number of aging infrastructures in the US put great threats to the safety and health of our society. Per the 2019 bridge report (Association, 2019) by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, 38% of the bridges in the nation have been identified as requiring repairs. More frequent and thorough inspection services are necessary to address the dire situation. The recent advances in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs), also known as drone, have made it an economical and effective tool for routine structural inspection compared to the traditional ground inspection tools. Currently, most aerial inspections are performed in a manual fashion with the UAVs fly within the visual line-of-sight, and the inflight data acquisitions are fully handled by the human operators. Operators' individual skill level and the battery capacity limit often bring uncertainties to the inspection performance in terms of the inspection quality and the coverage completeness. Several view and path planning methods have been actively studied for the autonomous aerial inspection and reconstruction. However, these planning methods were either only focused on designing the shortest path, or could only found sub-optimal results, or were limited to specific inspection scenarios. In this thesis we proposed flight planning methods for autonomous aerial inspection and photogrammetric 3D reconstruction of buildings and infrastructures. Novel viewpoint configurations and optimization strategies were developed in the proposed planning methods to achieve improved inspection and reconstruction results.The first part (Chapter 3) of the thesis is focused on computing the aerial inspection trajectory with a baseline observation quality while follows the constraints of UAVs motion dynamics. This leads to a coverage path planning problem that is solved with a novel view and path co-optimization framework. The framework led to better results with significant improvement of the inspection quality with minor sacrifice of inspection efficiency when compared to state-of-arts.The second part (Chapter 4) provides a two-phase multi-view stereo (MVS) planning approach for aerial photogrammetry of watertight geometries where only exterior surfaces of the objects need to be surveyed, such as buildings. This approach computes the optimal camera views based on a local topological graph which utilizes the property of structure-from-motion (SfM) for images triangulation. Three synthetic scenes, including a residential building, a commercially building and a historical site, were selected to evaluate the proposed approach. The results showed that the method takes less than 1⁄4 of the computation duration while demonstrating comparable or better reconstruction results when compared to the existing approaches. In the third part (Chapter 5), an automated flight planning method for detailed inspection and reconstruction of infrastructures with non-watertight geometries, where both exterior and interior surfaces need to be surveyed such as truss bridges, transmission towers and pipe systems, is proposed. Unlike the existing approaches that sets the network size as an input constraint, the proposed method incorporates a novel camera pose selection mechanism that relies on the domain knowledge of the structure-from-motion to properly determines the size of the optimal camera network. A synthesis truss bridge is selected as the case study to demonstrate the practicability of the proposed method.In conclusion, the proposed approaches addressed some key limitations in the existing autonomous flight planning methods for aerial inspection and photogrammetric reconstruction of buildings and infrastructures. For structure with watertight geometries, the proposed MVS planning method computes the optimal reconstruction results while significantly reduces the processing duration compared to the state-of-arts. For structure with non-watertight geometries, the proposed method is able to sufficiently reconstruct structure details with controllable image size, which are often considered as the fixed constraint in the existing approaches that either results in incomplete surface reconstruction or over-redundant images acquisition.
