Book Synopsis In Face of Reality by : Thomas A. James
Download or read book In Face of Reality written by Thomas A. James and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the work of noted liberal theologian Gordon Kaufman tracks his career from his first published book, Relativism, Knowledge, and Faith (1960) through his 2006 book, Jesus and Creativity, in light of recent conversations about divine action and modern scientific knowledge. James interprets Kaufman's mature position as a sophisticated reconstruction of divine activity that makes use of recent scientific theory and its naturalistic assumptions in order to revitalize a theocentric frame of reference rooted in classical theological tradition. Though there are costs to be paid in the construction of a theology of "radical naturalism," particularly with respect to the relation between divine action and the human good, Kaufman's program offers a distinctive way forward. After developing a critical analysis of the limitations and possibilities of Kaufman's mature position, James suggests that a christological reconsideration of the meaning of human flourishing offers the prospect of an even more radically naturalistic and theocentric theology.

Book Synopsis The Cosmic Cancer by : David Louis Sussman
Download or read book The Cosmic Cancer written by David Louis Sussman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planet Earth continues to creep to the edge of an abyss, and we have no one to blame but ourselves. As we've evolved, we've engaged in egregious behaviors without thinking about the consequences. Whether it's reproducing in large numbers, killing off other species or exploiting natural resources, we've failed to consider the impact of our actions. David Louis Sussman, a lifelong environmentalist, examines our missteps and suggests how we might alter our approach to boost the chances for survival for ourselves and other living things. He explores topics such as: - free will and how it can be a polarizing force; - sexual repression and its destabilizing consequences; - missteps by religious leaders and politicians; - structuring democracy on the basis of rights rather than responsibilities. The rate of extinction of other species is now greater than it has been since the disappearance of the dinosaurs 60 million years ago. There is little doubt that we are the culprits, and we could be next. Our collective decisions have brought about colossal changes in the planet we inherited, and we need to act now to provide future generations with a fighting chance of defeating The Cosmic Cancer.
Book Synopsis Science and Religion in Search of Cosmic Purpose by : John F. Haught
Download or read book Science and Religion in Search of Cosmic Purpose written by John F. Haught and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2000-03-03 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scientists today think of the universe as essentially purposeless. Likewise, modern and postmodern philosophers have often been suspicious of any religious claims that the natural world embodies and eternal meaning or teleology. Not all scientific thinkers subscribe to this cosmic pessimism, however, and some would even argue that contemporary knowledge is consistent with a religious sense of cosmic purpose. This stimulating book offers candid reflections on the question of cosmic purpose written both by prominent scientists and by scholars representing the world's religious traditions. Examining the issue from a wide variety of perspectives, this is the only current book to deal with cosmic purpose from an interreligious and interdisciplinary perspective. Here scientists such as physicist Andrei Linde and biologist Francisco Ayala come face to face with Islamic scholar Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Hindu philosopher Anindita Niyogi Balslev, and others. They examine such perplexing issues as the possible existence of multiple universes and the implications of seemingly purposive features in life. The contributions address the question of whether a religiously-based notion of a purposeful cosmos is consistent with the latest scientific understanding of nature, and whether theology can affirm the presence of divine action without contradicting science. These essays will challenge readers to ponder their own place in the cosmos as they seek to interpret the visions of the world's great spiritual traditions in the light of natural science.

Book Synopsis Astrophilosophy, Exotheology, and Cosmic Religion by : Andrew M. Davis
Download or read book Astrophilosophy, Exotheology, and Cosmic Religion written by Andrew M. Davis and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astrophilosopy, Exotheology, and Cosmic Religion: Extraterrestrial Life in a Process Universe applies Alfred North Whitehead’s process philosophy and the associated process philosophies of Henri Bergson, Teilhard de Chardin, and others to the interdisciplinary layers of astrobiology, extraterrestrial life, and the impact of discovery. This collection, edited by Andrew M. Davis and Roland Faber, asks questions such as “How have process thinkers imagined universal creative evolution and its implications for philosophies, theologies, and religions beyond earth?” and “How might their claims as to the primacy of organism, temporality, novelty, value, and mind enrich current discussions and debates across disciplines?” As experts in their fields, the contributors are informed by, but not limited to, process conceptualities. The chapters not only advance recent discussions in astrobiology, cosmology, and evolution but also consider a constellation of philosophical topics, from shared extraterrestrial knowledge and values to the possibilities or limitations afforded by A.I. technology, the Fermi Paradox, the Drake Equation, and the increasing need to nurture the cosmic dimensions of theological and religious traditions.

Book excerpt: When we are born, each one of us is given a name a name so unique and purposeful that each letter in it has certain vibrations and energies that correlate to the signs and planets of the zodiac. In her comprehensive guidebook, Linda Bender shares insight into an ancient science that explains the power and association of letters and words that allows others to unlock the secrets that lie hidden within a name, including who we are, why we are here, where we are going, and how we can get there. Bender, an astrologer and acrophonoligist, relies on inclusive notes from fellow astrologer Pepe Applegate in order to offer practical tools that help students understand and analyze the vibrational qualities of a name and its relationship to the planets at the time of birth. After detailing the complex background of acrophonology, Bender provides step-by-step guidance on how to investigate the letters in a name and apply that knowledge to our own lives and personalities in order to create a happier existence. Acrophonology provides valuable information about unmistakable and repeated correlations between astrological factors in birth charts and letters in birth names that empowers anyone to heal from within and ultimately discover their true potential.

Book Synopsis The Humble Approach Rev Ed by : John Marks Templeton
Download or read book The Humble Approach Rev Ed written by John Marks Templeton and published by Templeton Foundation Press. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For generations the discoveries of science tended to challenge the very existence of God. Templeton makes a striking argument for just the opposite point of view. He goes to the writings of many of the world's leading scientific thinkers—as diverse in background as Albert Einstein and Teilhard de Chardin—and discovers them in awe of the universe, perceiving the hand of Divine mystery at work. The Humble Approach teaches that man can discover and comprehend only a few of the infinite aspects of God's nature, never enough to form a comprehensive theology. The humble approach may be a science still in its infancy, but it seeks to develop a way of knowing God appropriate to His greatness and our littleness.” Formerly published by Continuum in 1994.
