Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erotic Resistance celebrates the erotic performance cultures that have shaped San Francisco. It preserves the memory of the city's bohemian past and its essential role in the development of American adult entertainment by highlighting the contributions of women of color, queer women, and trans women who were instrumental in the city's labor history, as well as its LGBT and sex workers' rights movements. In the 1960s, topless entertainment became legal in the city for the first time in the US, though cross-dressing continued to be criminalized. In the 1990s, stripper-artist-activists led the first successful class action lawsuits and efforts to unionize. Gigi Otálvaro-Hormillosa uses visual and performance analysis, historiography, and ethnographic research, including participant observation as both performer and spectator and interviews with legendary burlesquers and strippers, to share this remarkable story.

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Air and Shadows, the story of one man's fearless quest for revenge among some of the world's most dangerous criminals Lauded as his #1 favorite book of the year, Stephen King advised President Obama, in the pages of Entertainment Weekly, to pick up Michael Gruber's previous book, The Good Son. With an unforgettable hero, The Return is as exciting and provocative as Gruber's best work. The real Richard Marder would shock his acquaintances, if they ever met him. Even his wife, long dead, didn't know the real man behind the calm, cultured mask he presents to the world. Only an old army buddy from Vietnam, Patrick Skelly, knows what Marder is capable of. Then a shattering piece of news awakens Marder's buried desire for vengeance, and with nothing left to lose, he sets off to punish the people whose actions, years earlier, changed his life. Uninvited, Skelly shows up and together the two of them raise the stakes far beyond anything Marder could have envisioned. As Marder and Skelly head toward an apocalypse of their own making, Marder learns that good motives and sense of justice can't always protect the people a man loves. A range of fearsomely real characters, from a brutally violent crime lord to a daringly courageous young woman, a roller-coaster of twists and turns, and a shattering exploration of what constitutes morality in the face of evil, Michael Gruber has once more proven that he is "a gifted and natural storyteller" (Chicago Tribune) and shows why he has been called "the Stephen King of crime writing" (The Denver Post).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the whirlwind of life with three young sons, an active member in her tight-knit community, Ruth Rakoff felt in supreme control of her wide world. But when a routine mammogram revealed a tumor, that world rapidly shrunk down to the size of one breast. And so begins the journey of biopsy, surgery, chemotherapy, all accompanied by tidal waves of anxiety and grief: how to tell the children? Should she consider having a healthy breast removed, in case the cancer returns? Will food ever taste good again? Amid all the worry and change, there is also overwhelming gratitude for a stalwart network of family and friends who strive to help and support, to comfort and delight — even as everyone longs for the old normal of daily life. Through stories, confessions and anecdotes, Ruth Rakoff shows just what is at stake when cancer shows up at the party uninvited. There is no sugarcoating of either the physical or emotional pain of dealing with the disease or the effects of the poisons used to combat it. But for Rakoff, a life without laughter is not worth living. Brazen and irreverent, Ruth tells us that socks, no matter how luxurious, are not a cancer present. That no number of crystal-waving shamans can beat the healing power of good food, good friends and a raucous night on the town. And that just because you have cancer, you don’t have to be a better person. Far more than just a recounting of disease and recovery, When My World Was Very Small is an intimate, colorful, one-of-a-kind memoir that celebrates life, love and family.

Book excerpt: DescriptionThis is a collection of short stories, poems and essays which chart a journey through the counter-culture, regular hospitalizations, psychosis, depression and addictions. But not only my own, it includes essays on others who had a similar voyage e.g. Beat poet: Elise Cowen who died age 29 unpublished and is now recognized as a major poet in that genre and on the beliefs which both created conflict with the system but also had the capacity to sustain throughout. About the AuthorHe was born in 1959. Home was troubled and he run away to London age 13, lived in the 'counter-culture' in various well organized squats. Became ill after about 9 months and was placed in the Care of the local council. Then fostered to a radical academic couple, although that didn't survive long and he went back underground; eventually being arrested in Guildford. The magistrate slapped statuary 'Care Order' on him saying 'He was in need of care and protection.' At 14 he went to live in Hollymoor Hospital in Birmingham; this would be age 14-16.He was fairly frequently restrained and given injections of chlorpromazine. Upon discharge he lived for a short time in the 'Birmingham Settlement', but became ill and was moved to a specialist manic-depressive unit where he first had ECT, age 16. Care Order was revoked at 17 but substance abuse continued with regularly admissions to Central Hospital with psychotic episodes and would sometimes go into semi-catatonia. A 20 he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Some of the admissions were for periods of around a year. At the age 25 had specialist help with substance abuse problems and he has been 'clean' 24 years and 'dry 13 years'. In 1984 he was hearing a lot of voices and seeing things, spent a year in Central Hospital, two years in a Pre-discharge Unit in the community and then eight years in 'group homes', but he now lives in his own flat with 'Support Workers' visiting twice a week and a nurse once every two weeks. He sees a psychiatrist every three months. His body became toxic with medication in 2003 and was seriously ill physically, but is now on newer meds and is much better. He has a B.A (Hons) from the Open University and a 'Certificate in English Studies' at Warwick University, does a little job in a bookshop once a week and runs a small magazine that he produces every two months. He is now 49 and unfortunately has Hep C. He experienced three episodes of fairly minor abuse when a teenager and during the whole period their have been some nurses etc who have made his life difficult because of a firmly held leftist ideological perspective.

Book excerpt: We have another great issue this week, with original mysteries from N.M. Cedeño (courtesy of Acquiring Editor Michael Bracken) and Brian Rieselman, plus a terrific tale by David Dean (courtesy of Acquiring Editor Barb Goffman). Our classic mystery novel is The Winning Clue, by James Hay, Jr. (A note to the sensitive: it has some dialog in racial dialect, which was common in novels of the era.) And, of course, we have a solve-it-yourself puzzler from Hal Charles. On the science fiction and fantasy side, we start with an original tale by Jack Ritchie, best known for his crime stories. It was unpublished at the time of his death, and his estate has allowed us to publish it. We also have classics from Henry Slesar, Harlan Ellison, and a fantasy by E. Hoffmann Price. Our SF novel is The Prince of Space, by Jack Williamson. Here’s the complete lineup— Mysteries / Suspense / Adventure: “Wedding Vibes,” N.M. Cedeño [Michael Bracken Presents short story] “Random Numbers,” Hal Charles [Solve-It-Yourself Mystery] “Sofee,” by David Dean [Barb Goffman Presents short story] “The Crystal Goblet,” by Brian Rieselman [short story] The Winning Clue, by James Hay, Jr. [novel] Science Fiction & Fantasy: “Wedding Vibes,” N.M.
