Book excerpt: This memoir is an interesting blend of history and fantasy, of reality and poetry, of high-mindedness with the occasional carnality thrown in...I feel as though - not just for the fact of the words, but also for the ebb and flow of thought direction - I have been wandering the nerve-endings of your brain. Your history is there, certainly, but slathered with other gravies: poetry, philosophy, passion, and dispassion. And a great deal of playfulness. I believe there is something very Zen-'Masterish' about the angled prose you set down in this writing, a wild-and-crazy trip, man. While I was reading your history with 'C' (cosmos), I was reminded of these lines that Rumi wrote sometime in the mid-1200s: I would love to kiss you (The price of kissing is my life) Now my loving is running toward my life Shouting, "What a bargain, Let's buy it!" - Dennis O'Keefe, American Poet

Book Synopsis The Rise of a Prairie Statesman by : Thomas J. Knock
Download or read book The Rise of a Prairie Statesman written by Thomas J. Knock and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major biography of the 1972 U.S. presidential candidate and unsung champion of American liberalism The Rise of a Prairie Statesman is the first volume of a major biography of the 1972 Democratic presidential candidate who became America's most eloquent and prescient critic of the Vietnam War. In this masterful book, Thomas Knock traces George McGovern's life from his rustic boyhood in a South Dakota prairie town during the Depression to his rise to the pinnacle of politics at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago where police and antiwar demonstrators clashed in the city's streets. Drawing extensively on McGovern's private papers and scores of in-depth interviews, Knock shows how McGovern's importance to the Democratic Party and American liberalism extended far beyond his 1972 presidential campaign, and how the story of postwar American politics is about more than just the rise of the New Right. He vividly describes McGovern's harrowing missions over Nazi Germany as a B-24 bomber pilot, and reveals how McGovern's combat experiences motivated him to earn a PhD in history and stoked his ambition to run for Congress. When President Kennedy appointed him director of Food for Peace in 1961, McGovern engineered a vast expansion of the program's school lunch initiative that soon was feeding tens of millions of hungry children around the world. As a senator, he delivered his courageous and unrelenting critique of Lyndon Johnson's escalation in Vietnam—a conflict that brought their party to disaster and caused a new generation of Democrats to turn to McGovern for leadership. A stunning achievement, The Rise of a Prairie Statesman ends in 1968, in the wake of the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, when the "Draft McGovern" movement thrust him into the national spotlight and the contest for the presidential nomination, culminating in his triumphal reelection to the Senate and his emergence as one of the most likely prospects for the Democratic nomination in 1972..
Book Synopsis Digital Libraries and the Challenges of Digital Humanities by : Jeffrey Rydberg-Cox
Download or read book Digital Libraries and the Challenges of Digital Humanities written by Jeffrey Rydberg-Cox and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-11-30 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major challenges facing librarians and curators of digital repositories are the innovative 'born digital' documents created by scholars in the humanities. These documents range from the parsed corpora created by linguists to traditional reference information presented in electronic databases, to rich, multi-media hypertexts combining audio, still and moving video and text, and many other sorts of material. Too often, librarians think of electronic resources solely as providing access to subscription databases. This book encourages librarians to think holistically of the life cycle of electronic resources from new items being created at their institution, to end-user access, to long term preservation of digital resources. - Focuses on role of a digital library in the complete life cycle (creation, access, long term preservation) of digital objects created by scholars in the humanities - Covers recent developments in humanities computing and their implications for digital libraries - Presents accessible technical information about fields such as information retrieval and computational linguistics for a non-technical audience

Book Synopsis Sidereus Nuncius, Or The Sidereal Messenger by : Galileo Galilei
Download or read book Sidereus Nuncius, Or The Sidereal Messenger written by Galileo Galilei and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1989-04-15 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sidereus Nuncius (usually Sidereal Messenger, also Starry Messenger or Sidereal Message) is a short astronomical treatise (or pamphlet) published in New Latin by Galileo Galilei in March 1610. It was the first published scientific work based on observations made through a telescope, and it contains the results of Galileo's early observations of the imperfect and mountainous Moon, the hundreds of stars that were unable to be seen in either the Milky Way or certain constellations with the naked eye, and the Medicean Stars that appeared to be circling Jupiter.[1] The Latin word nuncius was typically used during this time period to denote messenger; however, albeit less frequently, it was also interpreted as message. While the title Sidereus Nuncius is usually translated into English as Sidereal Messenger, many of Galileo's early drafts of the book and later related writings indicate that the intended purpose of the book was "simply to report the news about recent developments in astronomy, not to pass himself off solemnly as an ambassador from heaven."[2] Therefore, the correct English translation of the title is Sidereal Message (or often, Starry Message)."--Wikiped, Nov/2014.
