Download or read book Amor Amicitiae written by J. J. McEvoy and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume honors the Rev. Professor James McEvoy on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. The theory of friendship, which has been one of McEvoy's major fields of research and publication, used to be at the heart of the philosophical project, and indissociable from it. For Socrates, philosophy was possible only as the pursuit of wisdom, virtue, and beauty in a community of friends engaged in an "erotic" quest for the good. The present volume wants to make a contribution to the recovery of the friendship theme in its central importance to philosophy. It contains eighteen contributions by colleagues and pupils of Professor McEvoy from three different continents, who approach the topics of friendship, love, and charity from a variety of different angles. Several contributions are devoted to the theory of friendship in ancient and medieval thought, including its Christian appropriation. Others analyze friendship in modern and contemporary philosophy, while two contributors introduce cross-cultural perspectives (Hinduism and traditional African thought). This volume will help to throw into higher relief the importance of the philosophy of friendship, as well as stimulating further discussion on this intriguing topic.

Book Synopsis A Metaphysics of Platonic Universals and their Instantiations by : José Tomás Alvarado
Download or read book A Metaphysics of Platonic Universals and their Instantiations written by José Tomás Alvarado and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a detailed defense of a metaphysics of Platonic universals and a conception of particular objects that is coherent with said metaphysics. The work discusses all the main alternatives in metaphysics of properties and tries to show why universals are the entities that best satisfy the theoretical roles required for a property. The work also explains the advantages of Platonic over Aristotelian universals in the metaphysics of modality and natural laws. Moreover, it is argued that only Platonic universals are coherent with the grounding profile required for universals. The traditional objections against Platonism are discussed and answered. The third part of the book, finally, offers a conception of particular objects as nuclear bundles of tropes that is coherent with the Platonic ontology of universals. This book is of interest to anyone that wants to understand the current –and intricate– debate in metaphysics of properties and its incidence in many other areas in philosophy.

Book excerpt: In Pura vida (Life is good)Spanish is more than vocabulary and grammar, just as Spanish-speaking cultures are more than products and practices. In this learner-centered introductory program, the authors’ commitment to a methodology based on true-to-life experiences brings Spanish to life. Pura vida is the discovery of a Spanish-speaking world through the experiences of real people who share anecdotes and reflections on those experiences. Students relate to these people and make deeper, more meaningful connections between language and culture, and acquire Spanish with an unparalleled sense of personal engagement. In this 12-chapter introductory program, students don’t only learn Spanish for real life, but also from real life. They discover that there is not just one homogeneous Hispanic culture, but rather that each Spanish-speaking country has its own rich, unique culture and that the people who live in these countries speak one common language with different accents, characteristics, and idiosyncrasies. The program offers truly seamless integration of cultural notions and language instruction and features 100% contextualized and personalized activities.

Download or read book Communal Feminisms written by Gabriella Gutiérrez y Muhs and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communal Feminisms explores identity and exile from three different perspectives: theory, interviews, and imaginative literature. The first part of this book describes and defines exile within identity; the second part delivers ten interviews and examines the socio-historical construction of exile through feminine Chicano literature and Chilean literature created and circulated during the Pinochet regime; and the third part contains a collection of unpublished, original works from each author interviewed. Including the interviews and creative works in both English and Spanish, Dr. Gabriella Gutierrez y Muhs emphasizes the need to publish bilingual works, without alienating English readers. This uniquely crafted collection will appeal to scholars across disciplines.
