Book excerpt: West, Bradford, Hoyt and Salinas have returned home after graduating from their basic training camp into God’s Army with instructions to expect the assistance of an assigned mentor to guide them through their advanced training. Faced with the familiarity of home, each one struggles against the challenge to live as a new creation in Christ. West conquers her resistance against feelings and emotions as she sets out on a global excursion to solidify her call to travel the world and help strengthen the saints. As an employee in the Illinois Department of Corrections, Bradford fights to serve the Lord behind bars. Hoyt faces the real world challenge of adulthood as he finds his place in the work force while still learning how to serve his king. Salinas cannot squelch the call back to his homeland but wonders how his family is going to cooperate. Each of these soldiers lean into the Lord and strengthen their gifts as they discover their purpose for His kingdom. After weathering the storms of their advanced training, these soldiers must now serve out that purpose and become veterans that leave a legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would someone who in his early academic years was a C minus student in all subjects relating to the English language write a book? My beginning started when I realized what going to basketball camp in the fourth grade meant to me. Finding something that infatuated me and over time, making slow and steady progress while doing something I loved, was an eye opener. I didnt mind the effort required to become a better player. The next important step was getting married and understanding how important is was to have a sense of purpose. I was part of team that was raising a family. A sense of purpose is a great motivator. My final driver was realizing my children and grandchildren should understand that I wasnt a grandfather from birth. Growing up is filled with a multitude of highs and lows, and it is important to move forward, taking the good with the bad. I wanted to give them a taste of the things I learned over time. In the early stages of life, so many young people have absolutely no clue as how much they will learn, growing physically and intellectually as they advance from teenagers to young adulthood. My suggestion is, find something you love to do early in life and decide to be very good in your field. There are no losses from this strategy as you will find something meant for you or something to stay away from. For me, it was important I stay away from engineering.

Book excerpt: From a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter at The New York Times comes the troubling story of the rise of the processed food industry -- and how it used salt, sugar, and fat to addict us. Salt Sugar Fat is a journey into the highly secretive world of the processed food giants, and the story of how they have deployed these three essential ingredients, over the past five decades, to dominate the North American diet. This is an eye-opening book that demonstrates how the makers of these foods have chosen, time and again, to double down on their efforts to increase consumption and profits, gambling that consumers and regulators would never figure them out. With meticulous original reporting, access to confidential files and memos, and numerous sources from deep inside the industry, it shows how these companies have pushed ahead, despite their own misgivings (never aired publicly). Salt Sugar Fat is the story of how we got here, and it will hold the food giants accountable for the social costs that keep climbing even as some of the industry's own say, "Enough already."
