Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "New Hope Care Center" the simple oval sign stated. Marking the entrance, it had been placed at the apex of the broad curving drive that was lined with sturdy maple trees. When Gerilee Serilium came to work that Thursday in August, she read the sign. "New Hope Care Center--" Pausing, she said, "I like the name. I think my next question for Mrs. Waterson will be to ask how she and her late husband chose the name." Gerilee experienced serenity, even with the early morning sound of mowers in the spacious front lawn. Mr. WWW III stood beside the open limo door and noticed the sign. "New Hope. This may be my last hope." Suddenly, the memories flood into his mind--Fritz in Bio 101, their dream of a care center together. This time, though, when the memories came, he could no longer ignore them and shove them aside. Then the repeating question that always followed, "Why? Why? Why?" But there was never an answer. The question uppermost on his mind today was, what if Margaret, good as she was, could not handle his mother's constant screaming? Inside the care center, at room 397, Mrs. Waterson saw William. When he turned to flee, she called out to him, "Oh no! You don't run now! Erica, take him to the quiet spot. I will meet with him out there." New Hope opens a door to possible change and freedom. Freedom? But from what? Anger? Suspicion? Torn emotions? Rejection? Lost dreams? Enjoy the journey with me as a variety of screamers meet the love sleuth.

Book Synopsis Love and Kisses Paul Hiebert by : Noreen Olson
Download or read book Love and Kisses Paul Hiebert written by Noreen Olson and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-03-02 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believing that “literary icons don't answer letters from ordinary people,” Noreen Olson nonetheless contacted iconic Canadian writer and humourist Paul Hiebert after reading his book Sarah Binks. To her surprise, Hiebert wrote back. Thus began a rich correspondence between two kindred spirits that ended only with Hiebert’s death in 1987. Love and Kisses, Paul Hiebert charts this correspondence, covering a vast array of subjects: from chickens to religion, literature to ageing. Letters reveal Hiebert’s philosophical and spiritual concerns, his wry sense of humour, and his strong belief in love—as well as revealing the rare friendship between Hiebert and Olson. Often amusing and uplifting, it also describes the demands of living on an Alberta farm through Olson’s letters and extracts from her columns that she often included with them. Love and Kisses, Paul Hiebert will appeal to those familiar with Hiebert’s work, those who enjoy insightful and often humorous memoirs, and those who appreciate family and spiritual values. To quote Paul Hiebert, "Only Love Endures."

Book Synopsis I'll Tell You Mine by : Hope Edelman
Download or read book I'll Tell You Mine written by Hope Edelman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University of Iowa is a leading light in the writing world. In addition to the Iowa Writers’ Workshop for poets and fiction writers, it houses the prestigious Nonfiction Writing Program (NWP), which was the first full-time masters-granting program in this genre in the United States. Over the past three decades the NWP has produced some of the most influential nonfiction writers in the country. I’ll Tell You Mine is an extraordinary anthology, a book rooted in Iowa’s successful program that goes beyond mere celebration to present some of the best nonfiction writing of the past thirty years. Eighteen pieces produced by Iowa graduates exemplify the development of both the program and the field of nonfiction writing. Each is accompanied by commentary from the author on a challenging issue presented by the story and the writing process, including drafting, workshopping, revising, and listening to (or sometimes ignoring) advice. The essays are put into broader context by a prologue from Robert Atwan, founding editor of the Best American Essays series, who details the rise of nonfiction as a literary genre since the New Journalism of the 1960s. Creative nonfiction is the fastest-growing writing concentration in the country, with more than one hundred and fifty programs in the United States. I’ll Tell You Mine shows why Iowa’s leads the way. Its insider’s view of the Iowa program experience and its wealth of groundbreaking nonfiction writing will entertain readers and inspire writers of all kinds.

Book Synopsis Just Trying to Have School by : Natalie G. Adams
Download or read book Just Trying to Have School written by Natalie G. Adams and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling, no state fought longer or harder to preserve segregated schools than Mississippi. This massive resistance came to a crashing halt in October 1969 when the Supreme Court ruled in Alexander v. Holmes Board of Education that "the obligation of every school district is to terminate dual school systems at once and to operate now and hereafter only unitary schools." Thirty of the thirty-three Mississippi districts named in the case were ordered to open as desegregated schools after Christmas break. With little guidance from state officials and no formal training or experience in effective school desegregation processes, ordinary people were thrown into extraordinary circumstances. However, their stories have been largely ignored in desegregation literature. Based on meticulous archival research and oral history interviews with over one hundred parents, teachers, students, principals, superintendents, community leaders, and school board members, Natalie G. Adams and James H. Adams explore the arduous and complex task of implementing school desegregation. How were bus routes determined? Who lost their position as principal? Who was assigned to what classes? Without losing sight of the important macro forces in precipitating social change, the authors shift attention to how the daily work of "just trying to have school" helped shape the contours of school desegregation in communities still living with the decisions made fifty years ago.
