Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion under insulation (CUI) refers to the external corrosion of piping and vessels that occurs underneath externally clad/jacketed insulation as a result of the penetration of water. By its very nature CUI tends to remain undetected until the insulation and cladding/jacketing is removed to allow inspection or when leaks occur. CUI is a common problem shared by the refining, petrochemical, power, industrial, onshore and offshore industries. The European Federation of Corrosion (EFC) Working Parties WP13 and WP15 have worked to provide guidelines on managing CUI together with a number of major European refining, petrochemical and offshore companies including BP, Chevron-Texaco, Conoco-Phillips, ENI, Exxon-Mobil, IFP, MOL, Scanraff, Statoil, Shell, Total and Borealis. The guidelines within this document are intended for use on all plants and installations that contain insulated vessels, piping and equipment. The guidelines cover a risk-based inspection methodology for CUI, inspection techniques (including non-destructive evaluation methods) and recommended best practice for mitigating CUI, including design of plant and equipment, coatings and the use of thermal spray techniques, types of insulation, cladding/jacketing materials and protection guards. The guidelines also include case studies. Guidelines cover inspection methodology for CUI, inspection techniques, including non-destructive evaluation methods and recommended best practice Case studies are included illustrating key points in the book

Book excerpt: Corrosion-under-insulation (CUI) refers to the external corrosion of piping and vessels that occurs underneath externally clad/jacketed insulation as a result of the penetration of water. By its very nature CUI tends to remain undetected until the insulation and cladding/jacketing is removed to allow inspection or when leaks occur. CUI is a common problem shared by the refining, petrochemical, power, industrial, onshore and offshore industries. In the first edition of this book published in 2008, the EFC Working Parties WP13 and WP15 engaged together to provide guidelines on managing CUI with contributions from a number of European refining, petrochemical and offshore companies. The guidelines are intended for use on all plants and installation that contain insulated vessels, piping and equipment. The guidelines cover a risk-based inspection methodology for CUI, inspection techniques and recommended best practice for mitigating CUI, including design of plant and equipment, coatings and the use of thermal spray techniques, types of insulation, cladding/jacketing materials and protection guards. The guidelines also include case studies. The original document first published in 2008 was very successful and provided an important resource in the continuing battle to mitigate CUI. Many members of the EFC corrosion community requested an update and this has taken between 18-24 months to do so. Hopefully this revised document will continue to serve the community providing a practical source of information on how to monitor and manage insulated systems. Revised and fully updated technical guidance on managing CUI provided by EFC Working Parties WP13 and WP 15 Contributions from a number of European refining, petrochemical and offshore companies Extensive appendices that provide additional practical guidance on the implementation of corrosion-under-insulation best practice, collected practical expertise and case studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of corrosion under insulation is studied by analysis of seven contributing factors: (1) equipment design; (2) service temperatures; (3) insulation selection; (4) paints and coatings; (5) weather barriers; (6) climate; and (7) maintenance practices. The purposes of our study are to identify optimum locations for inspection of insulated equipment and to identify improvements in new equipment design and insulation, as well as maintenance of existing systems. Emphasis is placed on equipment design features, operating temperature, and weather barrier deficiencies to guide inspection. Weather barrier maintenance is critical for prevention of corrosion on existing equipment. New insulated equipment designs should provide special details so that the system can be better sealed against water entry and allow clearance for the specified insulation thickness. On new equipment or when reinsulating existing equipment, a high quality coating system is recommended, since touch up opportunity does not exist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People seldom enjoy corrosion. They usually perceive it as a nasty phenomenon with which they must cope. Yet many people, far from the corrosion field, come across it because of their professional duty. Lawyers, historians, doctors, architects, philosophers, artists, and archeologists, to name a few, may want or need to understand the principles of corrosion. This volume explains this important topic in a lucid, interesting, and popular form to everybody: to students and young engineers who are only beginning their studies, to scientists and engineers who have dealt with corrosion for many years, and to non-specialists involved in corrosion problems. The book uses a fresh writing style, with some new explanations relating to thermodynamics of oxidation of iron and mild steels in water, reversible and irreversible potential, solubility of oxygen in water and aqueous solutions of electrolytes, corrosion of metals in fuels, corrosion of storage tanks for fuels and their corrosion control, corrosion monitoring in practice, humanitarian aspects of corrosion science and technology (history of the evolution of knowledge about corrosion, relationships between corrosion and philosophy, corrosion and art). Many practical examples of various corrosion phenomena are given.

Hot and cold insulation materials are discussed with the main consideration place on "cold" problems. The current solution of the problem is to paint all carbon steel that is to be insulated and operating between -1 and 121°C. Insulation material and thickness is then selected. A moisture barrier or a vapor barrier is added to protect the insulation. Additional deterents added are vapor stops and contraction/expansion joints. A European versus an American design is examined as a conclusion. An Appendix, including protective coatings used, and drawings for additional clarification are included.
