Book excerpt: In accordance with the mission of AGARD the Structures and Materials Panel (SMP) has always kept an open eye for the possibilities to sponsor collaborative programmes of research. AGARD is unique in its ability to realise the cooperation of laboratories in up to sixteen nations. In this way AGARD distinguishes itself from other international scientific and technical organisations. In the 1970s the SMP decided to embark on collaborative research activities in the area of fatigue. One of the first activities was the Corrosion Fatigue Cooperative Testing Programme (CFCTP), the recursor to the Fatigue in Aircraft Corrosion Testing (FACT) programme. Both programmes are described in this report. Failure by fatigue and degradation by corrosion continue to be major considerations in aircraft design. Environmental effects influence both initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks, and dynamic loading may cause more rapid deterioration of corrosion protection systems. Therefore the conjuoint action of dynamic loading and environmental attack, i.e. corrosion fatigue, requires special attention. Many corrosion fatigue tests have been done on aluminum alloys. However, few included critical structural details like joints, under realistic cyclic load histories and in service-like environments. Even fewer used practical corrosion protection systems. These aspects are specifically addressed bye the CFCTP and FACT programmes. The results provide a significant contribution to the understanding of aircraft corrosion fatigue and should encourage further investigation in this difficult and challenging area of aerospace technology.

Book excerpt: The structural materials used in airframe and propulsion systems influence the cost, performance and safety of aircraft, and an understanding of the wide range of materials used and the issues surrounding them is essential for the student of aerospace engineering.Introduction to aerospace materials reviews the main structural and engine materials used in aircraft, helicopters and spacecraft in terms of their production, properties, performance and applications. The first three chapters of the book introduce the reader to the range of aerospace materials, focusing on recent developments and requirements. Following these introductory chapters, the book moves on to discuss the properties and production of metals for aerospace structures, including chapters covering strengthening of metal alloys, mechanical testing, and casting, processing and machining of aerospace metals. The next ten chapters look in depth at individual metals including aluminium, titanium, magnesium, steel and superalloys, as well as the properties and processing of polymers, composites and wood. Chapters on performance issues such as fracture, fatigue and corrosion precede a chapter focusing on inspection and structural health monitoring of aerospace materials. Disposal/recycling and materials selection are covered in the final two chapters. With its comprehensive coverage of the main issues surrounding structural aerospace materials,Introduction to aerospace materials is essential reading for undergraduate students studying aerospace and aeronautical engineering. Book excerpt: This report summarizes research conducted by the Purdue University Schools of Engineering and Science during a four year AFOSR University Research Initiative focused on basic issues dealing with aging aircraft. The coordinated goals of the program fall into four main categories: damage development, prediction of crack growth and interaction failure prevention techniques, and advanced analysis methods. The damage development goals addressed the failure mechanisms of corrosion, fatigue crack formation, and fretting. The general objective of the crack growth and interaction tasks was to develop techniques to predict the growth of service induced cracks and to determine the impact of widespread cracking on damage tolerance. The theme of the failure prevention projects was to develop procedures to extend the operational life of older aircraft by delaying service induced damage. repairing cracked structure, and employing fleet tracking methods to prioritize maintenance actions within a fleet of aircraft. Finally, research was directed at developing advanced analysis methods used in other research tasks. These projects dealt with adding Statistical components to various materials evaluations and structural analyses, and developing ductile fracture criteria relative to aircraft materials and structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This experimental program was undertaken to obtain information on stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue crack growth in high strength metal alloys suitable for airframe components. In addition, tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of overloads and metallurgical factors on corrosion fatigue crack growth. The test program involved five alloys and seven test media. The four principal alloys were: 7075-T651 Aluminum, 6Al-4V(ELI) Beta annealed (Beta A) Titanium, 6Al-4V recrystallize Annealed (RA) titanium, and 9Ni-4Co-0.3C Steel (220-240 ksi); in addition the 7475-T651 alloy was subjected to a limited number of tests. All alloys were tested in the form of hot rolled plate. Test media included: desiccated air, water saturated JP-4 fuel, distilled water, 3.5% NaCl solution, sump tank water, alternating JP-4 fuel and distilled water, and dye penetrant (type ZL-2A). Most tests were conducted at 72F with a few tests being performed at +175F and -65F. Double cantilever beam specimens were used for all tests with the exception of a limited number of surface-flawed specimen tests. Corrosion fatigue tests were conducted using two cyclic frequencies (6 and 60 cpm) and three ratios of minimum to maximum stress (0.1, 0.5 and 0.8). Overload effects were investigated by testing 7075-T651 Aluminum, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-4V RA tapered double cantilever beam specimens in both desiccated air and 3.5% NaCl solution. Finally, a series of tests was undertaken to evaluate the effects on SCC and corrosion fatigue cracking of variations in metallurgical characteristics imparted to Ti-6Al-4V RA alloy plate by various thermal cycles.
