Book excerpt: Marine aluminum alloy 5456-H343 is a candidate primary structural material for naval high performance ships. This material in the form of 1/8 inch sheet was used to obtain initial alternating surface stress v cycles to failure data in air and salt water. Room temperature tests were performed using deflection controlled fully reversed bending at 30 Hz. Data was obtained for smooth and shallow, sharply notched specimens for fatigue lives up to 10 million cycles. Notches were semi-elliptical surface cracks with depths equal to .002 in., .0115 in., and .025 in. 5456-H343 showed excellent corrosion fatigue resistance in salt water, with increasing environmental sensitivity in the range of 1-10 million cycles. The material exhibits some notch sensitivity at a fatigue life of 10 million cycles. The following fatigue design/failure criterion were developed: (1) for shallow cracks less than .001 in. deep, the maximum fatigue stress is determined by endurance limit or fatigue strength of smooth specimens, and (2) for shallow cracks greater than .020 in. deep, the maximum fatigue stress is determined by the threshold or allowable stress intensity factor of notched specimens.

Book excerpt: The effects of environment on fatigue behavior are quite intimately related to such test variables as stress intensity, cyclic frequency, and temperature. The effect of these variables has been shown to be quite complex. However, a consistent pattern of behavior is beginning to emerge which, it is hoped, will lead to a considerably changed understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process. It is considered probable that an increased understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process will also contribute measureably to an improved understanding of general fatigue processes. Material variables such as composition, directionality of properties, and microstructure, have important effects on corrosion-fatigue behavior of aluminum alloys. However, it appears that these variables, at least in gaseous environments, may be important largely because of their effects on the mechanical behavior of aluminum alloys. On the other hand, studies in seawater suggest that these variables become increasingly important as the corrosive nature of the environment increases. This memorandum discusses in detail the effects of both test variables and material variables on corrosion fatigue. In addition, current theories of corrosion-fatigue mechanisms are outlined, and several methods of preventing corrosion fatigue are suggested. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was prepared to document and review the major factors involved in corrosion fatigue of metals in marine environments. This includes both crack initiation and crack growth. Background information was obtained by searching technical literature through eight different sources--(1) Chemical Abstracts, (2) Metals Abstracts, (3) Metals and ceramics Information Center (MCIC), (4) Engineering Index, (5) Copper Data Center, (6) National Technical Information Service, (7) Defense Technical Information Service, and (8) Proceedings of Offshore Technology Conferences. Unpublished and proprietary papers and reports were excluded unless permission was obtained to release the results contained therein. Thus, most of the information was from documents published in the open literature. For convenient use and reference, discussions on corrosion-fatigue behavior are divided into separate chapters dealing with (1) carbon and alloy steels, (2) stainless steels, (3) nickel-base alloys, (4) copper-base alloys, (5) aluminum alloys, and (6) titanium alloys. Representative plots and tabulations of important data and factors influencing them are presented, but exhaustive plots and tabulations of all available data, such as might be found in handbooks, are not included because these are beyond the scope of this review. A general background for corrosion fatigue is presented in Chapter 2, which briefly discusses experimental procedures, general phenomena and mechanisms, variables affecting corrosion of metals in marine environments, and use of fatigue data in design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue behavior of 5456-H117 aluminum alloy has been studied by fracture mechanics and conventional test methods in air and saltwater environments. The results show that fatigue resistance of the alloy is reduced greatly by the presence of saltwater at low stress or stress intensity levels. Test data of smooth and precracked specimens are combined and discussed with regard to failure predictions.

This book was released on 1978 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack propagation studies were conducted on specimens of four high-strength marine alloys to determine the sensitivity of fatigue-crack growth rates to seawater and electrochemical potential. The materials studied included HY-130 steel, 17-4 PH steel in several combinations of melt processing and temper, Ti-6A1-2Cb-1Ta-0.8Mo, and 5456-H116 aluminum. Fatigue testing was conducted at low cyclic frequency, and the fatigue data are presented in terms of fatigue-crack growth rate (da/dN) versus crack-tip stress-intensity factor range (?K). Specimens were exposed to fresh flowing natural seawater under freely corroding and potentiostat-controlled electrochemical conditions while undergoing corrosion-fatigue testing. The results of this investigation reveal significantly distinct differences among the four alloys under the conditions of corrosion fatigue. Both seawater and potential acted to accelerate crack growth rates in the ferrous alloys, which proved to be much more sensitive to seawater and negative potential than the nonferrous alloys studied. The titanium alloy exhibited no measurable sensitivity to either seawater or negative potential. The aluminum alloy exhibited only moderate sensitivity to seawater and beneficial effects from both positive and negative potentials. These exploratory studies indicate that high-strength marine alloys exhibit widely differing responses to corrosion-fatigue crack growth and that high-strength steels currently aimed for marine service are among the alloys most deleteriously affected.
