Book excerpt: This report describes the work conducted from 1993 to 1998 to develop cost-effective "new breeds" of organic, inorganic, ceramic and metallic coatings, as well as metallic alloys that can be utilized on or as reinforcement for embedment in portland cement concrete. As part of the study, 12 different bar types were tested in concrete: black bars, 3 bendable and 3 nonbendable epoxies, Type 304 and Type 316 stainless steel, copper-clad, galvanized and spray metallic-clad reinforcing. Measurements of macrocell voltages, half-cell potentials, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear polarization and mat-to-mat resistances were used in conjunction with visual observations to determine the effectiveness of each system.

Book excerpt: The Virginia Department of Transportation recently initiated a search for metallic reinforcing bars that are not only more durable and corrosion resistant than the epoxy-coated bars currently used, but also economical. In the last few years, several new bars have shown promise; one is still in the developmental stage. These bars are (1) stainless steel-clad carbon steel bars, (2) bars made of an MMFX-2 "microcomposite" steel, (3) bars made of a new "lean" duplex stainless steel called 2101 LDX, and (4) a carbon steel bar coated with a 2-mil layer of arc-sprayed zinc and then epoxy. These bars were embedded in concrete blocks, which were then subjected to severe weekly cycles of ponding with a saturated salt solution and drying. For comparison, two solid stainless steel (304 and 316LN) bars and a carbon steel bar (ASTM A 615) were also included. The times-to-corrosion of these bars were estimated through almost weekly monitoring of the macrocell current, open-circuit potential, and polarization resistance for up to 3 years. From a chloride concentration-vs.-time profile established for the test blocks, the amount of chloride ions each bar was able to tolerate was estimated and compared. Based on such information, an analysis of the long-term costs associated with the use of these bars in a bridge deck in Virginia was also conducted. This interim report was prepared to provide bridge engineers with this timely information. The information should be valuable in making a rational selection of the most cost-effective metallic reinforcing bars that will satisfy the specified design life for concrete bridge components that will be exposed to different degrees of salting.

Book excerpt: This report presents study findings related to corrosion resistance of 12 types of metallic reinforcing steel bars. The accelerated laboratory corrosion testing was performed using eight large-scale concrete slabs that simulated typical reinforced concrete bridge decks for about 18 mo by an accelerated corrosion testing protocol followed by a detailed autopsy of extracted bar samples and acid-soluble chloride concentrations determined at the bar imprints. The weekly corrosion testing protocol consisted of a 3-d wetting cycle in 15 weight percent chloride solution at 77°F and a 4-d drying cycle at 100°F. The best corrosion performance group of reinforcing bars includes epoxy-coated reinforcing steel, dual-coated reinforcing steel, stainless steel–clad reinforcing steel, and duplex solid stainless reinforcing steel with 23 percent chromium. The intermediate corrosion performance group includes duplex solid stainless reinforcing steel with 21 percent chromium, austenitic solid stainless reinforcing steel, another type of stainless steel–clad reinforcing steel, ferritic solid stainless reinforcing steel with 12 percent chromium, high-strength micro-composite reinforcing steel, and hot-dip galvanized reinforcing steel. The poorest corrosion performance group includes black steel and lean duplex solid stainless reinforcing steel with 12 percent chromium.

Book excerpt: This study evaluated two half-cell mapping methods for nondestructive evaluation of epoxy-coated rebar (ECR) in concrete: the semi-fixed bi-electrode and the moving bi-electrode methods. These methods were expected to provide early detection of corrosion-related damage and ensure adequate time for repair. The techniques were evaluated by comparing the half-cell measurements using the two half-cell mapping techniques and measurements using the standard half-cell technique. The study found that in concrete specimens the response of both bi-electrode techniques was similar to that of the standard half-cell technique. Each technique was sensitive enough to distinguish between ponded and unponded regions along the Type I test beams. Although additional research is required to determine exactly how sensitive either bi-electrode technique is for assessing corrosion of ECR in concrete, it is clear that the use of any nondestructive tool for condition surveys of bridge decks would benefit VDOT and Virginia. The author recommends that the Type I test beams used in this study continue to be ponded until corrosion is initiated to aid in understanding the benefit of using the two bi-electrode methods during the various stages of corrosion. In addition, the Virginia Department of Transportation's Structure & Bridge Division should identify two structures that are beginning to show signs of corrosion, one bridge with ECR and the other with bare bar, to be used in a field study to determine if either bi-electrode method would benefit VDOT as a condition survey tool.

Book excerpt: It has long been recognised that corrosion of steel is extremely costly and affects many industry sectors, including concrete construction. The cost of corrosion of steel reinforcement within concrete is estimated at many billions of dollars worldwide. The corrosion of steel reinforcement represents a deterioration of the steel which in turn detrimentally affects its performance and therefore that of the concrete element within which it has been cast. A great amount of work has been undertaken over the years concerning the prevention of corrosion of steel, including the application of coatings, which has included the study of the process of corrosion itself, the properties of reinforcing steels and their resistance to corrosion as well as the design of structures and the construction process. The objective of fib Bulletin 49 is to provide readers with an appreciation of the principles of corrosion of reinforcing steel embedded in concrete and to describe the behaviour of particular steels and their coatings as used to combat the effects of such corrosion. These include galvanised reinforcement, epoxy coated reinforcement, and stainless reinforcing steel. It also provides information on the relative costs of the materials and products which it covers. It does not deal with structure design or the process of construction or with the post-construction phase of structure management including repair. It is hoped that it will nevertheless increase the understanding of readers in the process of corrosion of reinforcing steels and the ability of key materials and processes to reduce its harmful effects.

Book excerpt: The Concrete Solutions series of International Conferences on Concrete Repair began in 2003, with a conference held in St. Malo, France in association with INSA Rennes, followed by the second conference in 2006 ( with INSA again, at St. Malo, France), and the third conference in 2009 (in Padova and Venice, in association with the University of Padova). Now in 2011, the event is being held in Dresden in Germany and has brought together some 112 papers from 33 countries. Whereas electrochemical repair tended to dominate the papers in earlier years, new developments in structural strengthening with composites have been an increasingly important topic, with a quarter of the papers now focusing on this area. New techniques involving Near Surface Mounted (NSM) carbon fibre rods, strain hardening composites, and new techniques involving the well established carbon fibre and polyimide wrapping and strengthening systems are presented. Seventeen papers concentrate on case studies which are all-important in such conferences, to learn about what works (and what doesn’t work) on real structures. Thirteen papers are devoted to new developments in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Other topics include service life modelling, fire damage, surface protection methods and coatings, patch repair, general repair techniques and whole life costing. This book is essential reading for anyone engaged in the concrete repair field, from engineers, to academics and students and also to clients, who, as the end user, are ultimately responsible for funding these projects and making those difficult decisions about which system or method to use.
