Book excerpt: This study documents the specific effects of CO2 on corrosion and identifies promising methods for controlling corrosion in fields using CO2 injection. Information has been assembled on: CO2 corrosion problems in general, surface and downhole corrosion problems specifically associated with CO2 enhanced oil recovery, and methods to reduce corrosion problems in CO2 environments. Corrosion mechanisms, kinetic behavior, and the effects of various parameters on corrosion by CO2 are presented in this study. Engineering metals are not attacked by CO2 under oil field environments unless liquid water is also present. Plain and low alloy steels are attacked by mixtures of CO2 and liquid water. Attack on these bare metals may become serious at a CO2 partial pressure as low as 4 psi and it increases with CO2 partial pressure although not in direct proportion. Fluid flow rate is an important factor in CO2/water corrosion. Practically all stainless steels and similar resistant alloys are not particularly subject to corrosion by CO2/water mixtures alone, even at high CO2 pressures. Elevated levels of CO2 can aggravate the corrosive effects of other species such as hydrogen sulfide, oxygen, and chloride. Mixtures of CO2, carbon monoxide (CO), and water can cause stress corrosion cracking of plain steels. Corrosion problems in CO2 systems should be circumvented when possible by avoiding combination of the corrosive components. Although water cannot be excluded throughout the CO2 injection-oil production-CO2 and water reinjection chain, air in-leakage can be minimized and oxygen scavengers used to remove any residual. Exclusion of oxygen is important to the successful use of other corrosion control measures. A discussion is given of the main control methods including metal selection, protective coatings and nonmetallic materials, and chemical inhibition. (DLC).

Book excerpt: Natural gas is most likely contains carbon dioxide as part from reservoir fluid composition, on other hand CO2 can be injected for enhanced oil recovery purposes. As such, corrosion control in carbon dioxide containing media is area of concern for oil field industries. Process operating parameters, especially temperature, pressure and fluid composition, are generally contributing to corrosion behavior for such conditions. Extensive investigation studies had been carried out to understand and control CO2 corrosion. CO2 dissolves in oil wells produced water forming carbonic acid which in turn dissociates and decrease the solution pH. The nature of oxide/passive film resulted from a corrosion process contributes to the overall behavior of it as well as temperature and chemical composition of the aqueous media. Surfactants are most likely corrosion inhibitors employed in the petroleum industry to protect iron and steel equipment used in drilling, production, transport and refining of hydrocarbons. The efficiency of the applied corrosion inhibitor depends on its concentration and stability of the formed inhibition film on metal surface.

Carbon dioxide has been implicated in the global climate change and reducing them is a potential solution. The injection of carbon dioxide for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has the duel benefit of sequestering the CO2 and extending the life of some older fields. Sequestering CO2 and EOR have many shared elements that make them comparable. This volume presents some of the latest information on these processes covering physical properties, operations, design, reservoir engineering, and geochemistry for AGI and the related technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last 10 years the world has come to a point where the easily explorable oil deposits have now been found, and it is anticipated that such deposits will be depleted by the beginning of the Twenty-first Century. However, the increasing demand of man kind for energy has caused technologists to look into ways of find ing new sources or to reevaluat:e unconventional sources which, in the past, have not been economical. In this respect, heavy crude and tar sand oils are becoming important in fulfilling the world's energy requirements. What are heavy crude and tar sand oils? There is still some confusion as to their definitions, inasmuch as they vary among organizations and countries. In an effort to set agreed meanings, UNITAR, in a meeting in February 1982 in Venezuela, proposed the following definitions (see also Table 1): 1. Heavy crude oil and tar sand oil are petroleum or petroleum like liquids or semi-solids naturally occurring in porous media. The porous media are sands, sandstone, and carbonate rocks. 2. These oils will be characterized by viscosity and density. Viscosity will be used to define heavy crude oil and tar sand oil, and density (oAPI) will be used when viscosity measurements are not available. 3. Heavy crude oil has a gas-free viscosity of 100-10000 mPa.s (cp) 3 o at reservoir temperatures, or a density of 943 kg/m (20 API) 3 o o to 1000 kg/m (10 API) at 15.6 C and at atmospheric oressure.
