Book excerpt: Excerpt from Correspondence of Mr. Joseph Jekyll: With His Sister-in-Law, Lady Gertrude Sloane Stanley, 1818-1838, Preceded by Some Letters Written to His Father From France, 1775 The family of Jekyll first became notable in the person of Sir Joseph Jekyll, Master of the Rolls in the reign of George II. A successful lawyer, and a man of staunch political convictions, he was one of the many contemporaries of Pope whose names are preserved in the poet's verses, - "Jekyll, or some odd old Whig, Who never changed his principles or wig." A brother of Sir Joseph, among other children left a son Edward, who entered the Royal Navy, rose as high as captain, and was the father of Joseph Jekyll, the author of these letters. Joseph Jekyll was born in the year 1754. Of his childhood we know little or nothing, but that he had a sister, and was educated at Westminster. He matriculated at Christ Church at the age of eighteen in 1771, and took his degree of B.A. three years later. Book excerpt: "This is the first full-length study of Byron's influence on Victorian writers, concentrating on Carlyle, Emily Bronte, Tennyson, Bulwer Lytton, Disraeli, and Wilde. Rather than treating influence in terms of source study or of intersubjective struggle, it demonstrates how institutions of cultural production mediate the access that later writers have to earlier ones."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Marmaduke Herbert; or, the Fatal Error by : Susanne Schmid
Download or read book Marmaduke Herbert; or, the Fatal Error written by Susanne Schmid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early and mid-nineteenth century, Marguerite Blessington, who had been born in Ireland but spent most of her life in London, became a famous salonnière; she was generally regarded as an important contemporary author, but as no literary executor took care of her oeuvre posthumously, she eventually moved into the background. Her novels, partly informed by the silver-fork genre, are typical examples of Romantic Victorianism, influenced by the Romantic cult of the solitary male self, by the fascination with Italy, and by the 1840s vogue of crime fiction, while simultaneously giving space to ambivalent reflections about Blessington’s own Irish background. This volume, as part of ‘Chawton House Library: Women’s Novels’ series, presents her 1847 novel Marmaduke Herbert; or, the Fatal Error, a highly popular piece of fiction in its day, being reprinted in German, French and American editions within a year of its publication.
