Book excerpt: High time and intensity resolution satellite measurements of X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation during solar flares are studied to determine the wavelength dependence of the flare radiation responsible for sudden frequency deviations (SFD). SFD's measure the flare-induced effects in the E and F1 regions of the ionosphere and are in effect like a broadband (1-1030 Å) detector for impulsive flare enhancements. He II 303.8 Å, O V 629.7 Å, H Ly [upsilon] 972.5 Å, C III 977.0 Å, and H Ly [alpha] 1215.7 Å were found to have essentially the same time dependence as the total ionizing radiation producing SFD's, except that they decay faster than the net 1-1030 Å radiation. Flare enhancements of Fe XV 284.1 Å, Fe XVI 335.3 Å, Si XII 499.3 Å. Mg X 625.3 Å, and Ne VIII 770.4 Å, which are normally coronal lines, appear to have a much slower time dependence than the radiation responsible for SFD's. X-rays in the 0.5-3 Å range are slightly slower than the radiation responsible for SFD's during the decay stage; 1-8 Å X-ray flares are slower, especially during the decay stages; and 8-20 Å flare radiation enhancements are slower throughout the entire SFD.

It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to aresolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts airns to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 12 contains literature published in 1974 and received before March 15, 1975; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also inc1uded. Begin ning with volume 11 some minor changes of our c1assification scheme have been made. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Book excerpt: An extensive data base consisting of VLF records for 130 different propagation paths over a 2-year period was analyzed statistically to study the correlation of VLF propagation changes with solar X-ray events recorded by satellites. Results of the study indicate that with reasonable restrictions on path illumination conditions, it is possible to detect and classify solar X-ray flares, in near realtime, by proper interpretation of VLF phase and amplitude variations. A method of calibrating VLF paths for this purpose is discussed, and a possible global network of receiving stations capable of 24-hr per day monitoring of solar X-rays is described.
