Book excerpt: Art based assessments tools have been used over the past decades to measure psychological symptoms and patterns associated with mental illness. This correlation study used the Formal Elements Art Therapy Scale (FEATS) ratings with the Person Picking an Apple From A Tree drawing and the Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) as measurements of depression. Seven of the fourteen FEATS elements most conducive to depression were correlated with the BDI. Overall there was a positive correlation between the BDI and two of the seven FEATS elements. Additional significance was found when the scores for males and females were analyzed separately, and also with those participants who did not carry an additional diagnosis of substance abuse.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of Formal Elements Art Therapy Scale (FEATS) ratings of Draw a Person Picking an Apple from a Tree" (PPAT) drawings to assess for depression in chronic mental patients recovering in a social rehabilitation clubhouse setting. Thirty participants (n=15 male and n=15 female) were recruited on a voluntary basis to participate in this study. The FEATS ratings were compared to results of the Beck's Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). It was hypothesized that the art assessment technique (PPAT) rated with the FEATS would be as effective as the widely used and reliable assessment scale (BDI-II) in determining a participant's level of depression. Results did not support the hypothesis in that correlations between the FEATS and the BDI-II are weak and mostly positive.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the validity of Rawley Silver's Draw a Story (DAS) assessment as a measure of depression. The DAS was administered to 70 volunteer participants (ages 19-65 years) who also completed the Beck Depression Inventory, second edition (BDI-II). A negative correlation between the two measures would support the validity of the DAS as a measure of depression. A marginally significant negative correlation (r=.20, p=.094) was obtained. The correlation may have been attenuated by the small number of participants with high levels of self-reported depression. However, these results suggest that the DAS in its present form should not be used independently as a measure of depression. The DAS rating scale might benefit from modifications in order to become a more valid instrument for this purpose.

Book excerpt: Laying out a new integrative approach to the treatment of depression, this book looks at the biological, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of clinical art therapy. Skov presents the theoretical foundation for a Jungian approach to art therapy and depression together with its clinical methodology and framework, outlining a procedure for working with people with mild to moderate depression. Integrative art therapy in clinical practice is introduced alongside case studies from the author's research and practice to show how transformative processes operate in the field between the conscious and the unconscious part of the psyche. Finally the author lays out her research methodology and discusses the possible implications of the integrative art therapy approach. This revolutionary approach, which places equal importance on both art therapy and psychology in the treatment of depression, will be a valuable resource for all art therapists and students working with clients and patients who suffer from depression. Psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors and other mental health professionals will also find it of interest.

Book excerpt: Arts Therapies in the Treatment of Depression is a comprehensive compilation of expert knowledge on arts therapies’ potential in successfully addressing depression. The book identifies ways of addressing the condition in therapy sessions, shares experience of tools and approaches which seem to work best and guides towards a conscious and confident evidence-based practice. Including contributions from international experts in the field of arts therapies, the book presents some of the most recent, high-profile and methodologically diverse research, whether in the form of clinical trials, surveys or case studies. The three sections of this volume correspond to particular life stages and explore major topics in arts therapies practice and the nature of depression in children, adults and in later life. Individual chapters within the three sections represent all four arts therapies disciplines. The book hopes to improve existing arts therapies practice and research, by encouraging researchers to use creativity in designing meaningful research projects and empowering practitioners to use evidence creatively for the benefit of their clients and the discipline. Arts Therapies in the Treatment of Depression is an essential resource for arts therapies researchers, practitioners and arts therapists in training. It should also be of interest to other health researchers and health professionals, particularly those who work with clients experiencing depression and in multidisciplinary teams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-Being Therapy (WBT) is the psychotherapeutic approach developed by Giovanni Fava, a world-renowned psychiatrist and psychotherapist, and the editor-in-chief of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics. WBT is an innovative strategy that is based on monitoring psychological well-being, whereby the patient progressively learns how to make it grow. This type of therapy has enjoyed much success and is increasing in popularity around the world. The first part of this long-awaited book describes how the idea for WBT was formed, the first patient treated, and the current evidence that supports this approach. In Part II, Giovanni Fava provides the treatment manual of WBT, describing what each session entails, and includes many examples from his own cases. The last part covers some of the specific conditions for which WBT can be used and how sessions can be conducted. It includes sections on depression, mood swings, generalized anxiety disorder, panic and agoraphobia, and posttraumatic stress disorder. There is also information on the application of WBT in interventions in school settings. Throughout the book, Dr. Fava keeps things interesting by peppering his narrative with anecdotes from his medical career. The primary audience for this book is professionals within psychology, psychiatry, and other fields of medicine (e.g., family practice, pediatrics, and rehabilitation). However, the book is written in a relaxed, clear, and accessible style that also makes it of interest to counselors, educators, and family and friends of patients, not to mention patients themselves.

Book excerpt: This study proposes two hypotheses: (1) group art therapy will significantly reduce mean scores on the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS 20), (2) there will be a negative correlation between the number of colors used in a "Draw your illness" task and alexithymia scores. The participants were 15 patients (6 females and 9 males) at an outpatient substance abuse program. The TAS 20 and the short form of the Beck Depression Inventory were administered. The study did not support either hypothesis. Depression scores, however, did decline significantly after treatment. In addition, those patients high in alexithymia who used more colors in the "Draw your illness" task were more likely to benefit from treatment in terms of reduced alexithymia scores. Another finding was that the combination of alexithymia, depression, and failure to include drug-related materials in the "Draw your illness" picture significantly predicted failure to complete the substance abuse program due to relapse.

It is a disorder that has a significant impact on an individual's life as well as an impact on the individuals families and the society in which they live. Additionally, untreated mood disorders have an enormous impact on the United States economy. As such there is a clear necessity for valid and reliable assessment instruments for researchers and clinicians to use in the appropriate detection of depression. Therefore, the primary focus of the present study is to evaluate the concurrent validity of a recently developed self-report measure. In recent years, a variety of checklists and rating scales have emerged that assess for the presence of depression symptoms. Two of these instruments, the Beck Depression Inventory-II and the Burns Depression Checklist, constitute two widely used and well researched self-report scales for measuring depression symptoms. Both of these instruments are well established in terms of reliability and validity. In order to establish the concurrent validity of the recently developed measure, the Burns Depression Checklist-Revised, the scores on this measure were correlated with scores on the Beck Depression Inventory and the Burns Depression Checklist using a sample of 100 undergraduate participants. A statistically significant correlation between the Burns Depression Checklist-Revised and both the Beck Depression Inventory-II and the Burns Depression Checklist, providing compelling empirical support for the Burns Depression Checklist-Revised.

This book was released on 1999-04-30 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on decades of theory, research, and practice, this seminalbook presents a detailed and comprehensive review, evaluation, andintegration of the scientific and empirical research relevant toAaron T. Beck's cognitive theory and therapy of depression. Sinceits emergence in the early 1960s, Beck's cognitive perspective hasbecome one of the most influential and well-researchedpsychological theories of depression. Over 900 scientific andscholarly references are contained in the present volume, providingthe most current and exhaustive evaluation of the scientific statusof the cognitive theory of depression. Though the application of cognitive therapy has been welldocumented in the publication of treatment manuals, the cognitivetheory of depression has not been presented in a unified manneruntil the publication of this book. Coauthored by the father ofcognitive therapy, Scientific Foundations of Cognitive Theory andTherapy of Depression offers the most complete and authoritativeaccount of Beck's theory of depression since the publication ofDepression: Causes and Treatment in 1967. Through its elaborationof recent theoretical developments in cognitive theory and itsreview of contemporary cognitive-clinical research, the bookrepresents the current state of the art in cognitive approaches todepression. As a result of its critical examination ofcognitive-clinical research and experimental informationprocessing, the authors offer many insights into the futuredirection for research on the cognitive basis of depression. The first half of the book focuses on a presentation of theclinical phenomena of depression and the current version ofcognitive theory. After outlining important questions that havebeen raised with the diagnosis of depression, the book then tracesthe historical development of Beck's cognitive theory and therapythrough the 1960s and '70s. It presents the theoretical assumptionsof the model and offers a detailed account of the most currentversion of the cognitive formulation of depression. The second half of the book provides an in-depth analysis of theempirical status of the descriptive and vulnerability hypotheses ofthe cognitive model. Drawing on over three decades of research, thebook delves into the scientific basis of numerous hypothesesderived from cognitive theory, including negativity, exclusivity, content specificity, primacy, universality, severity/persistence,selective processing, schema activation, primal processing, stability, diathesis-stress, symptom specificity, and differentialtreatment responsiveness. "In 1967 the first detailed description of the cognitive theory ofdepression was published in Depression: Causes and Treatment by oneof us, Aaron T. Beck. The basic concepts of the theory laid out inthat volume still provide the foundation for the cognitive model 30years later. As well the first systematic investigations of thetheory described in the 1967 volume contributed to a paradigmaticshift in theory, research, and treatment of depression thatresulted in a very vigorous and widespread research initiative onthe cognitive basis of depression. The present book is intended toprovide a comprehensive and critical update of the developments incognitive theory and research on depression that have occurredsince the initial publication in the 1960s."--David A. Clark, fromthe Preface.
