Book Synopsis Proterozoic Geology of Western North America and Siberia by : P. K. Link
Download or read book Proterozoic Geology of Western North America and Siberia written by P. K. Link and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a compendium of research on the Belt Supergroup. It is an outgrowth of Belt Symposium IV, held in Salmon, Idaho, in July, 2003, in conjunction with the Tobacco Root Geological Society annual field conference. Because of the geographic extent and great thickness of the Belt Supergroup, years of work have been required before conclusions are "bona fide". The Mesoproterozoic Belt Supergroup of western Montana and adjacent areas is geologically and economically important, but it has been frustratingly hard to understand. The previous Belt Symposium volumes offer an historical view of the progress of the science of geology in the western United States. The advent of U-Pb geochronology, especially using the ion microprobe (SHRIMP) and laser-ablation ICPMS, has injected geochronometric reality into long-standing arguments about Belt stratigraphy. Several papers in this volume utilize these new tools to provide constraints on age and correlation of Belt strata (Chamberlain et al., Lewis et al., Link et al., and Doherty et al.)
Book Synopsis The Tectonic Setting and Origin of Cretaceous Batholiths within the North American Cordillera by : Robert S. Hildebrand
Download or read book The Tectonic Setting and Origin of Cretaceous Batholiths within the North American Cordillera written by Robert S. Hildebrand and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this Special Paper, Hildebrand and Whalen present a big-picture, paradigm-busting synthesis that examines the tectonic setting, temporal relations, and geochemistry of many plutons within Cretaceous batholithic terranes of the North American Cordillera. In addition to their compelling tectonic synthesis, they argue that most of the batholiths are not products of arc magmatism as commonly believed, but instead were formed by slab failure during and after collision. They show that slab window and Precambrian TTG suites share many geochemical similarities with Cretaceous slab failure rocks. Geochemical and isotopic data indicate that the slab failure magmas were derived dominantly from the mantle and thus have been one of the largest contributors to growth of continental crust. The authors also note that slab failure plutons emplaced into the epizone are commonly associated with Cu-Au porphyries, as well as Li-Cs-Ta pegmatites.

Book Synopsis Mesozoic Assembly of the North American Cordillera by : Robert S. Hildebrand
Download or read book Mesozoic Assembly of the North American Cordillera written by Robert S. Hildebrand and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this well-illustrated book, Hildebrand expands upon his model for the development of the North American Cordillera detailed in Special paper 457. Starting with an overview of Cordilleran geology he goes on to provide an in depth look at how the Rubian ribbon continent was assembled. He integrates the complex geology of the Cordillera into an actualistic model involving arc magmatism, arc-continent collision, slab failure magmatism, and transcurrent motion in both Rubia and the western North American margin. While much of the focus is on the assembly of the Rubian ribbon continent, Hildebrand explores its interactions with North America during the Sevier and Laramide events and concludes that North America was the lower plate in both"--Provided by publisher.

Book Synopsis Sedimentology of Shale by : Paul E. Potter
Download or read book Sedimentology of Shale written by Paul E. Potter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We wrote Sedimentology of Shale primarily because we lacked a handy, reasonably comprehensive source of information and ideas about shales for students in our sedimentology program. It was also our feeling that the time for shales to receive more study had finally arrived. Sedimentology of Shale also seems very timely because today more sedimentologists are interested in shales. Certainly in the last five years the pace of shale research has no ticeably quickened because the role of shales as important sources of oil, gas, heavy metals and as a long understudied part of the earth's geologic his tory has been recognized. Noteworthy developments include the elucida tion of the importance of trace fossils in shales, the discovery of thick sequences of overpressured shales in regions such as the Gulf Coast (which have important implications for hydrocarbon migration and faulting), the ex tension of the principles of metamorphic facies to the realm of low tempera ture diagenesis by study of the organic matter in shales, and shales as ul timate sources for mineral deposits. Accordingly, we decided it was timely to write a book on shales. In one respect, however, ours is an unusual book. Most books in geology are produced after one or two decades of progress have been made in a field and attempt to summarize and evaluate that progress.
Book Synopsis Sediment Provenance by : Rajat Mazumder
Download or read book Sediment Provenance written by Rajat Mazumder and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-10-08 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediment Provenance: Influences on Compositional Change from Source to Sink provides a thorough and inclusive overview that features data-based case studies on a broad range of dynamic aspects in sedimentary rock structure and deposition. Provenance data plays a critical role in a number of aspects of sedimentary rocks, including the assessment of palaeogeographic reconstructions, the constraints of lateral displacements in orogens, the characterization of crust which is no longer exposed, the mapping of depositional systems, sub-surface correlation, and in predicting reservoir quality. The provenance of fine-grained sediments—on a global scale—has been used to monitor crustal evolution, and sediment transport is paramount in considering restoration techniques for both watershed and river restoration. Transport is responsible for erosion, bank undercutting, sandbar formation, aggradation, gullying, and plugging, as well as bed form migration and generation of primary sedimentary structures. Additionally, the quest for reservoir quality in contemporary hydrocarbon exploration and extraction necessitates a deliberate focus on diagenesis. This book addresses all of these challenges and arms geoscientists with an all-in-one reference to sedimentary rocks, from source to deposition. - Provides the latest data available on various aspects of sedimentary rocks from their source to deposition - Features case studies throughout that illustrate new data and critical analyses of published data by some of the world's most pre-eminent sedimentologists - Includes more than 150 illustrations, photos, figures, and diagrams that underscore key concepts
