Book excerpt: "The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between step count totals and step test heart rate in elementary school age children. A second goal was to evaluate if pedometers can be used to accurately measure daily physical activity and to see if children are regularly active throughout the week. The final goal was to see whether the 10,000 steps a day prescribed for adults is accurate for children. A fourth, fifth and sixth grade class were selected from an elementary school in the Pacific Northwest to participate in this study during the fall of 2004. Digiwalker pedometers were used to calculate total daily activity for six consecutive days, which included weekday and weekend days. The three-minute YMCA step test was used for the recovery heart rate scores during the participants' regular Physical Education class. Data analysis consisted of a Pearson Product-Moment Correlation of the entire population divided into high and low fitness based on recovery heart rate scores (HR 104, HR̲ 04). No significant differences were found between average step counts and recovery heart rate. There was a higher, though still not significant correlation between average step count and recovery heart rate in the sixth graders. Using the 23 students who completed all six days of step counts a Spearman's Rank Order Correlation found a significant correlation between total steps and recovery heart rate (rho= -.551, p = .012). The findings suggest there is some relationship between daily step counts and aerobic capacity in these children and that pedometers may be used as an assessment of activity levels in elementary age children. Even though the mean step count was just under 10,000 steps a day further research with a larger population is necessary to determine an accurate step count prescription for elementary school age children"--Document.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this correlational study was to test the hypothesis that educational environment and level of physical activity self-efficacy relates to aggregate physical fitness levels in fifth-grade children in a Midwestern metropolitan community. Religious and public school children (N = 184) completed physical activity self-efficacy measures to examine their exercise and barrier status. These scores were compared to a FitnessGram® battery of physical fitness tests involving body composition, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, and aerobic capacity to measure their total fitness levels. FitnessGram® scores were converted into a composite score measuring their healthy fitness zone status. Multiple Linear Regressions (R) examined the direction and strength of the linear relationships while the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was used to test the correlation among the variables. Results of the study showed a significant relationship between educational environment and barrier self-efficacy (r = .158, p = .032) and aggregate physical fitness (R = .264, p = .004). However, school environment and barrier self-efficacy (r = .205; p = .005), had a stronger relationship to higher levels of aggregate physical fitness (R = .282, p = .002) in fifth-grade children.

A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in social-communicative deficits and restricted and repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities (APA, 2013). While current estimates suggest 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with ASD, more alarming statistics indicate 1 in 50 school-aged children live with the disorder (Blumberg, Bramlett, Kogan, Schieve, & Jones, 2013). Recent empirical research indicates the amount of physical activity children between 9-17 years of age with ASD spend in physical activity is lower than typically developing peers (Tyler, MacDonald, & Menear, 2014) and sadly declines as children become older (MacDonald et al., 2011; Memari et al., 2013; Pan & Frey, 2006). While research indicates the importance of health-related physical fitness in relation to the physical activity behavior of children without disabilities (Chen, Welk, & Jones, 2014; Welk et al., 1999) research has yet to confirm this in children with ASD. In an effort to improve levels of physical activity behavior in children with ASD research would benefit from examining the relationship between health- related physical fitness and the amount of physical activity children with ASD spend in school-day physical activity. Whereas the majority of physical activity research reflects daily average levels of physical activity, this study is unique in that it investigated the children physical activity in the context of the school-day. This was in support to the need for school-based physical activity provisions specific to children with ASD (Pan et al., 2015). Purpose. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to examine relations between muscular strength and aerobic capacity and the amount of physical activity a sample of children, between 9-17 years of age diagnosed with ASD, accumulated in school. It was hypothesized that both aerobic capacity and muscular strength would have a significant positive association with the amount of school-day physical activity children with ASD accrued. Methods. Children with ASD between the 9-17 years of age (N = 48, M = 40, F = 8) participated in this cross-sectional descriptive study. Data analysis consisted of a multiple regression, which was used to understand the relationship between the amount of school-day physical activity accumulated (i.e., steps per minute accumulated over 4 days of wear time) and components of health-related physical fitness including aerobic capacity (i.e., distance in meters walked in 6 minutes), and muscular strength (i.e., upper body isometric strength measured through grip strength) and in children between 9-17 years of age diagnosed with ASD. Results. Results indicated that the combination of age, gender, aerobic capacity and muscular strength explained 4.83 % of school-day physical activity, R = 13.68. Although a Pearson correlation demonstrated a non-significant relationship between aerobic capacity and school-day physical activity, the multiple regression analysis revealed a significant relationship between aerobic capacity and time spent in school-day physical activity (B = 0.00, p = 0.02). Other variables (i.e. age, gender and muscular strength) in the model did not demonstrate a significant relationship to school-day physical activity. Conclusion. The health-related physical fitness components of aerobic capacity were found to be significantly associated with the amount of physical activity accumulated by children with ASD during school. While more research is needed in the examination of relations between school-day physical activity and health-related physical fitness in school-age children (i.e. 9-17 years of age) with ASD, this study provides an initial step forward in the identification of key physical activity determinants relevant to children diagnosed with ASD.

This descriptive correlational study examined a physical activity questionnaire (PAQ) used by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers in the Cardiovascular Health in Children Study (CHIC). Sixty-eight children, mean age 9.39 years, were randomly selected by classroom from two public elementary schools. Children's CHIC PAQ scores were compared with readings from an accelerometer (Caltrac) and estimated maximal aerobic capacity. Low correlations were found between CHIC PAQ scores and accelerometer readings (r = .18) and estimated VO2max (r 0 .14). No relationship was found between aerobic capacity and accelerometer readings (r = .00). None of these relationships was significant. Sex (male) and body mass index most influenced accelerometer measured PA. The CHIC PAQ seemed unable to quantify PA. Limitations and recommendations for the use of questionnaires and the Caltrac are discussed.

Book excerpt: Aerobic fitness is an important measure of physical fitness and has been shown to affect academic achievement in youth. We hypothesized that aerobic fitness was positively associated with standardized test scores, independent of demographic and medical factors. Further, we hypothesized that the academic risk score, an aggregate measure of course failure rate, standardized test performance, attendance, and number of disciplinary actions, would moderate this association. This was a cross-sectional study of 18,312 Seattle Public Schools students in grades four through twelve. For every one minute students ran the one-mile distance slower, there was a 2 percentile reduction in math and reading MAP scores. Further, meeting criterion-based fitness standards was associated with a 10 and 7 percentile increase in math and reading MAP scores, respectively. The academic risk score did attenuate these associations, but all associations stayed statistically significant. Results from this study indicate that percentile test scores on standardized tests in school-aged children are higher among children who achieve aerobic fitness standards, compared to those who do not achieve aerobic fitness standards.
