Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how to provide exemplary library service to individuals in prison or jail, by applying the public library model when working with inmate populations. These authors, a jail librarian and an outreach librarian, offer a wealth of insights and ideas, answering questions about facilities and equipment, collection development, services and programming; computers and the Internet; managing human resources, including volunteers and inmate workers; budgeting and funding; and advocacy within the facility and in the community. The approach is practical and down-to-earth, with numerous examples and anecdotes to illustrate concepts. More than 2 million adults are serving time in correctional facilities, and hundreds of thousands of youth are in juvenile detention centers. There are more than 1,300 prisons and jails in the United States, and about a third as many juvenile detention centers. Inmates, as much or more than the general population, need information and library services. They represent one of the most challenging and most grateful populations you, as a librarian, can work with. This book is intended to aid librarians whose responsibilities include serving the incarcerated, either as full-time jail or prison librarians, or as public librarians who provide outreach services to correctional facilities. It is also of interest to library school students considering careers in prison librarianship. The authors, a jail librarian and an outreach librarian, show how you can apply the public library model to inmate populations, and provide exemplary library service. They offer a wealth of ideas, answering questions about facilities and equipment, collection development, services and programming; computers and the Internet; managing human resources, including volunteers and inmate workers; budgeting and funding; and advocacy within the facility and in the community. The approach is practical and down-to-earth, with numerous examples and anecdotes to illustrate ideas.

Book excerpt: This summary report addresses the information needs of American citizens, institutions, schools, industry, and government within the context of three themes: literacy, democracy, and productivity. The report includes a preamble, which provides background information on the conference; discussions of the challenges posed by the Information Age in each of the three theme areas; a summary of the highlights of the delegates' recommendations; and the 15 recommendations earmarked for priority action by an early vote of the conference delegates. The recommendations cover the following issues: availability and access to information; national information policies; information networks through technology; structure and governance; services for diverse needs; training to reach end users; personnel and staff development; preservation of information; and marketing to communities. It is suggested that these initiatives collectively provide a blueprint for ways in which the United States can move from a nation at risk to a nation of students and restore our international preeminence in commerce, industry, science, and technological innovation. Also included in the report are the mission statement of the White House Conference (excerpted from Public Law 100-382 and the following appendixes: (1) summary of the conference process; (2) geographic overview of delegate representation; (3) the 95 recommendations and petitions adopted by the delegates together with an index to the recommendations; (4) a list of conference advisory committee members; (5) a list of National Commission on Libraries and Information Science commissioners; (6) conference committee rosters; and (7) a list of conference delegates and alternates. Concluding the report are the names and titles of the White House Conference staff. (MAB)

Book Synopsis Information Services to Diverse Populations by : Nicole A. Cooke
Download or read book Information Services to Diverse Populations written by Nicole A. Cooke and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-12-12 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a gap in the existing library and information science literature, this book consolidates recent research and best practices to address the need for diversity and social justice in the training and education of LIS professionals. The development of cultural competency skills and social awareness benefits LIS students, their future employers, and the library profession at large—not to mention library customers and society as a whole. This textbook and comprehensive resource introduces students to the contexts and situations that promote the development of empathy and build cultural competence, examines the research in the areas of diversity and social justice in librarianship, explains how social responsibility is a foundational value of librarianship, and identifies potential employment and networking opportunities related to diversity and social justice in librarianship. A valuable book for students in graduate library and information science programs as well as LIS practitioners and researchers interested in knowing more about the topic of diversity in the profession, Information Services to Diverse Populations: Developing Culturally Competent Library Professionals addresses the political, social, economic, and technological divides among library patrons, covers transformative library services, and discusses outreach and services to diverse populations as well as how to evaluate such services, among many other topics. Appendices containing suggestions for exercises and assignments as well as lists of related library organizations and readings in related literature provide readers with additional resources.
