Book Synopsis The Economy of Prostitution in the Roman World by : Thomas McGinn
Download or read book The Economy of Prostitution in the Roman World written by Thomas McGinn and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2010-03-25 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a number of classical scholars have turned their attention to prostitution in the ancient world. Close examination of the social and legal position of Roman meretrices and Greek hetairai have enriched our understanding of ancient sexual relationships and the status of women in these societies. These studies have focused, however, almost exclusively on the legal and literary evidence. McGinn approaches the issues from a new direction, by studying the physical venues that existed for the sale of sex, in the context of the Roman economy. Combining textual and material evidence, he provides a detailed study of Roman brothels and other venues of venal sex (from imperial palaces and privates houses to taverns, circuses, and back alleys) focusing on their forms, functions, and urban locations. The book covers the central period of Roman history, roughly from 200 B.C. to A.D. 250. It will especially interest social and legal historians of the ancient world, and students of gender, sexuality, and the family. Thomas A. J. McGinn is Associate Professor of Classical Studies at Vanderbilt University.
Book Synopsis Dictionary of Bibliographic Abbreviations Found in the Scholarship of Classical Studies and Related Disciplines by : Jean S. Wellington
Download or read book Dictionary of Bibliographic Abbreviations Found in the Scholarship of Classical Studies and Related Disciplines written by Jean S. Wellington and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-08-30 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trying to identify abbreviated titles of journals and standard bibliographic works is a major difficulty facing researchers and librarians in the field of Classical Studies. This revised edition has been greatly expanded, with nearly twice the abbreviations (17,000) and bibliographic entries (12,400) as the first edition. Also, the Greek and Cyrillic abbreviations have increased by seven and four fold respectively. Abbreviations for internet sites are now included, as are those for associations in the broad area of Classical Studies. There are also more entries for Eastern European and regional archaeological publications. This revised volume is divided into two parts. Part One consists of an alphabetical listing of bibliographic abbreviations found in the scholarship of classical studies and related disciplines. Meanwhile, Part Two is an alphabetically arranged bibliographic descriptions for the works published in classical studies and related disciplines. Special efforts were made to increase the coverage in peripheral areas, making this new edition a useful reference tool for scholars in all subjects of study in the ancient and medieval world.
Book Synopsis The Porta Stabia Neighborhood at Pompeii Volume I by : Steven J. R. Ellis
Download or read book The Porta Stabia Neighborhood at Pompeii Volume I written by Steven J. R. Ellis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-04 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of four volumes that present the results from the University of Cincinnati's archaeological excavations of the Porta Stabia neighborhood at Pompeii. These excavations targeted two town blocks on either side of the via Stabiana (insulae VIII.7 and I.1), which comprised modest houses, shops, workshops, food and drink outlets, and hospitality buildings. The present volume describes and documents the phased, structural development of this neighborhood over several centuries. The earliest discernible activity here dates to the 6th century BCE, with the insulae taking their definitive shape only in the 2nd century BCE. It is from this time that production activities dominate the neighborhood, only to be wholly replaced by retail-oriented street-fronts from the early 1st century CE. Underpinning this narrative of urban development is a focus on the social and structural making of the Porta Stabia neighborhood, along with an interest in both the micro- (urban site formation processes) and macro-contextualization of the site (setting the results within a larger historic and urban framework).
