Still, we know relatively little about how people interacted in daily life at the city of Memphis and its Saqqara necropolis in the late second millennium BCE. By focussing on lived ancient religion, we can see that the social and religious strategies employed by the individuals at Saqqara are not just means on the way to religious, post-mortem salvation, nor is their self-representation simply intended to manifest social status. On the contrary, the religious practices at Saqqara show in their complex spatiality a wide spectrum of options to configure sociality before and after one's own death. The analytical distinction between religion and other forms of human practices and sociality illuminates the range of cultural practices and how people selected, modified, or even avoided certain religious practices. As a result, pre-funerary, funerary and practices of the subsequent mortuary cults, in close connection with religious practices directed towards other ancestors and deities, allow the formation of imagined and functioning reminiscence clusters as central social groups at Saqqara, creating a heuristic model applicable also to other contexts.

Robins discusses the proportional changes underlying the revolutionary style instituted during the Amarna Period. She also considers how the grid system influenced the overall composition of scenes. High in a cliff at the remote site of Beni Hasan in Middle Egypt, thirty-nine ancient tombs line a narrow ledge above the Nile River. These tombs were cut into the rock face, with pillars of living rock often left standing inside the echoing chambers. The tomb of Khnumhotep II dates to the early 12th Dynasty, primarily to the reign of Amenemhet II. The owner was a high official of the ancient administrative area in which Beni Hasan was located, the Oryx (XVIth Upper Egyptian) none or province. His primary title was Overseer of the Eastern Desert, a title which he held from Year 19 of Amenemhet II (c. 1910 B.C.) until at least Year 6 of Senwosret II (c. 1891 B.C.). This monument is the latest of the large Beni Hasan tombs, and represents the culmination of the series. The detailed analysis of this complex tomb necessarily comprises most of this volume.
