We use data from 207 corporations who made corporate venture capital investments in the period 1998-2001 to explore the effects of a crucial early experience on subsequent firm conduct. Our results reveal that firms taking corporate venture capital investment are two to four times more likely to establish their own corporate venturing programs when compared to firms that did not receive such funding. In addition, the influence of the formative experience of corporate venture capital financing creates differences in organizational learning when compared to firms that did not receive corporate venture financing.

Book excerpt: Abstract: In addition to initial financing, venture capital (VC) firms also provide other value-added contributions. Many VC firms and their portfolio companies consider these value-added contributions the most significant contributions VC firms make. The value-added contributions have been found to be different depending on whether the VC firm is a "traditional" VC firm or "corporate" venture capital (CVC) firm. Traditional VC and CVC firms have different investment objectives and possess different areas of expertise, leading to differences in the value-added contributions provided. The differences in the value-added contributions raise the question of whether the performance of portfolio firms is affected by the type of venture capital backer. This study seeks to 1) quantify the impact of VC-affiliation on portfolio firm performance, and 2) compare the differences in performance of VC and CVC firms' portfolio companies. The paper examines the financial performance, IPO valuation, and stock performance of VC-backed, CVC-backed, and independent companies in the 3-year period following an IPO. The years 1998, 1999, and 2002 (representing the height of the tech bubble and bear market of the early 2000s recession) were chosen as the sample period. The results of the analysis indicate that VC-backed companies as a whole outperform independent companies in every aspect, confirming that the value-added contributions of VC firms help the performance of their portfolio companies. The performance of portfolio companies also differed depending on the type of their VC-backer. Traditional VC-backed portfolio companies had higher revenue growth and IPO valuations, while CVC-backed portfolio companies had higher net income growth and slightly better stock performance. Ultimately, the results confirm that VC firms improve portfolio company performance, and the impact of the VC firm's value-added contributions differs depending on the type of VC-backing.

Book excerpt: Corporate Entrepreneurship and Venturing is positioned at the crossroads of the strategy and entrepreneurship fields. The common theme is how and why corporate entrepreneurship and corporate venturing can contribute to innovation and strategic renewal in large established companies, in particular it explores ways to balance exploitation and exploration in established companies. The issue is how the locus of entrepreneurship affects the way corporate entrepreneurship addresses the exploitation/exploration challenge. In some chapters corporate entrepreneurship is dispersed across the organization and they examine the key elements of an entrepreneurial culture and the organizational conditions that are favorable to entrepreneurial initiatives. The other chapters contribute to the discussion on the potential role of corporate venturing which is separated from the main parts of the organization. They examine the advantages and disadvantages of corporate venture capital programs as particular forms of focused corporate entrepreneurship.

We test two economic hypotheses on the connection between venture capital investment and subsequent firm performance. We find that lagged VC investments scaled by industry assets are negatively related to subsequent firm stock returns after adjusting for other factors. However, not all firms are equally impacted. We find that financially constrained firms suffer the most when new VC money pours into an industry. Firms receiving VC money are active in patent creation which appears to increase innovation pressures on established companies. It appears that the market is slow to incorporate the information contained in the venture capital investments.

Book excerpt: ÔThis exciting second volume of cutting-edge research on venture capital takes up where volume one leaves off, bringing greater depth to topics covered in the first volume (such as angel investing) and adding new topics and insights. It poses interesting questions such as Ð Is venture capital in crisis? Are new models of early investing needed? Ð and offers carefully researched answers. Landstršm and Mason provide insightful commentary and skillfully pinpoint the contributions of a talented set of researchers. Both scholars and practitioners of venture capital will want to read this book.Õ Ð Harry J. Sapienza, University of Minnesota, US ÔThe second edition of the Handbook of Research on Venture Capital provides an important guidepost for venture capital researchers. As Landstršm and Mason point out, the nature of venture capital has changed dramatically over the last ten years. The asset class as a whole has failed to return principal and the old model is under tremendous strain. The contributors nicely highlight many of these changes, especially how venture capital has scaled beyond the US. For those of us active in venture capital research, the chapters raise many interesting research questions that deserve further attention.Õ Ð Andrew Zacharakis, Babson College, US This Handbook charts the development of venture capital research in light of the global financial crisis, starting with an analysis of the current venture capital market and the changing nature of the business angel market. Looking at governance structures, the performance of venture capitalists in terms of investments, economic impact and human capital, and the geographical organization of business angels and venture capital global ÔhotspotsÕ, this book also analyses the current state of venture capital research and offers a roadmap for the future.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Initiating Successful Corporate Venture Capital Investments Abstract 49 large U.S. corporations that make corporate venture capital (CVC) investments as part of their new business development strategies were studied. Venture capital firms were found to be the key deal source of the more successful CVCs. Market familiarity was found to be even more important than technological familiarity in initiating strategically successful investments in small enterprises. Later round investments performed better strategically than did early round financings. CVC financial success flows from its strategic success, which in turn is influenced favorably by strategic focus. Executive Summary The strategies of 49 large U.S. corporations using corporate venture capital (CVC) for new business development were studied and evaluated. Venture capital firms were found to be the key deal source for CVCs making investments in small ventures that the CVCs judge to be successful strategically. Successful CVCs frequently first invest in venture capital funds as a venture capital limited partner, then take a more proactive long-run approach by investing side-by-side with private venture capitalists directly in start-ups. Corporate familiarity with the ventures market was found to be more important in determining strategic success than familiarity with the venture's technology. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was not that long ago that it might have been possible to cover the topic of venture capital in one paper. Now, it is not possible to provide comprehensive coverage in even one book. The industry has flourished, as variations of he initial venture capital funds have been developed and now operates in most developing and developed economies. This is clearly reflected in this volume, which has a strong focus on Europe and Asia. Each of the papers is a stand alone effort. However, a full reading of the volume provides a panoramic picture of the global extent of venture capital, some of its challenges, and the likely direction of future efforts. Venture capital and the venture capitalist have been shown to have a positive impact on performance in many cases. This is clearly the reason why some many emerging economies want to increase the level of venture capital investment in their country.
