Book Synopsis Taxing Telecommunications in Developing Countries by : Ms.Thornton Matheson
Download or read book Taxing Telecommunications in Developing Countries written by Ms.Thornton Matheson and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing countries apply numerous sector-specific taxes to telecommunications, whose buoyant revenues and formal enterprises provide a convenient “tax handle”. This paper explores whether there is an economic rationale for sector-specific taxes on telecommunications and, if so, what form they should take to balance the competing goals of promoting connectivity and mobilizing revenues. A survey of the literature finds that limited telecoms competition likely creates rents that could efficiently be taxed. We propose a “pecking order” of sector-specific taxes that could be levied in addition to standard income and value-added taxes, based on capturing rents and minimizing distortions. Taxes that target possible economic rents or profits are preferable, but their administrative challenges may necessitate reliance on service excises at the cost of higher consumer prices and lower connectivity. Taxes on capital inputs and consumer access, which distort production and restrict network access, should be avoided; so should tax incentives, which are not needed to attract foreign capital to tap a local market.

With today’s dynamic and rapidly evolving communication environment, media managers need to have a clear understanding of the different delivery platforms as well as critical management and planning strategies going forward. This book provides a detailed look at seven key sectors of the media and telecommunications field as well as ongoing changes within the industry. The new edition includes updated research throughout including material on major business and technology changes as well as the importance of digital lifestyle reflected in E-commerce and developments in Over-the-Top Video-streaming services. Special attention is given to such areas as strategic planning, innovation, marketing, finance and leadership. Book Synopsis Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunications by : Vanda Rideout
Download or read book Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunications written by Vanda Rideout and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003-01-30 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rideout focuses on the protection of the public interest, a crucial element neglected by most recent studies, and shows that although alliances have been formed between labour, consumers, and public interest activists, significant disagreements over issues such as free trade, long distance and local competition, and a targeted subsidy program for very low-income Canadians have meant that this united front has not been able to counter the forces of the new neo-liberal telecommunication policy regime. Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunications details the complex relationships between the various corporate and government interests, shows how the changes they brought about have locked Canada's telecommunications system into the orbit of the US system, and discusses the implications this has for Canadians.

Book Synopsis Building Telecom Markets by : Whasun Jho
Download or read book Building Telecom Markets written by Whasun Jho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobile telecommunication industry has been one of the fastest growing industries in the global economy since the late 1990s. As the first country to offer commercial Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) cellular service in the world, Korea was able to jump right into the digital mobile markets, enhancing its status as a leading manufacturer of mobile equipment. While the growth of the telecom industry occurred with the emergence of worldwide market-oriented regulatory reform and liberalization in telecommunications, the state-market relationship in Korea evolved from state monopoly toward “centralized governance” and later toward “flexible governance,” which is substantially different from “liberal governance” of the US. This book examines the uniqueness of Korean regulatory reforms of the mobile telecommunication sector, and argues that the market-oriented regulatory reform and liberalization should be explained by focusing on the interactions among the state, the private sector, and international political economic environment. It will appeal to scholars and policy-makers alike concerned with market regulation, Asian development and political economy.
Book Synopsis Logics of Resistance by : Steve Dubb
Download or read book Logics of Resistance written by Steve Dubb and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines how unions representing telephone workers--one in Mexico and one in British Columbia, Canada--have responded to changes in technology, work organization, and government policy stemming from the rise of a more global economy. Some business writers have suggested that globalization will compel unions to cooperate with managers as workers are more exposed to international competition. By analyzing the actual record of two unions in the highly internationalized telecommunications industry, however, a different picture emerges.

Book Synopsis Three Essays in Financial Markets. The Bright Side of Financial Derivatives: Options Trading and Firm Innovation by : Iván Blanco
Download or read book Three Essays in Financial Markets. The Bright Side of Financial Derivatives: Options Trading and Firm Innovation written by Iván Blanco and published by Ed. Universidad de Cantabria. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do financial derivatives enhance or impede innovation? We aim to answer this question by examining the relationship between equity options markets and standard measures of firm innovation. Our baseline results show that firms with more options trading activity generate more patents and patent citations per dollar of R&D invested. We then investigate how more active options markets affect firms' innovation strategy. Our results suggest that firms with greater trading activity pursue a more creative, diverse and risky innovation strategy. We discuss potential underlying mechanisms and show that options appear to mitigate managerial career concerns that would induce managers to take actions that boost short-term performance measures. Finally, using several econometric specifications that try to account for the potential endogeneity of options trading, we argue that the positive effect of options trading on firm innovation is causal.
