Book Synopsis Holiness and Community in 2 Cor 6:14–7:1 by : J. Ayodeji Adewuya
Download or read book Holiness and Community in 2 Cor 6:14–7:1 written by J. Ayodeji Adewuya and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines 2 Cor 6:14--7:1 and argues that its theological message is communal holiness. It culminates in an attempt to posit a Pauline theology of corporate sanctification in the Corinthian correspondence. Paul's view of sanctification, it is argued, should be seen as multifaceted: relational, communal, ethical, and mission-oriented. Thus, a coherent picture of Pauline teaching on holiness in the Corinthian correspondence emerges from this book. For Paul, the focus of God's redemptive activity is, primarily, the community and not the individual. Paul's view on holiness has to do with communal holiness within the people of God, the goal of which is to make God known to the wider society. In sum, this book argues that the teaching on holiness should not be, and cannot be, satisfactorily explained in terms of the individual, but only as the individual stands in relation to the community of faith. Thus, the conclusion offers a corrective to some strands of modern interpretation that emphasize the individualistic, experiential aspects of Christian holiness, thus tending to reduce Christian holiness to morality.
Book Synopsis Holiness as a Liberal Art by : Daniel Castelo
Download or read book Holiness as a Liberal Art written by Daniel Castelo and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-07-18 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holiness is a topic that is rarely discussed in Christian colleges and seminaries, yet the rationale for the existence of these institutions is that they provide environments where people can grow into the image of Christ. In other words, these places exist so that Christians can grow in holiness. The essays collected in this volume treat the theme of holiness from a variety of theological disciplines, all with the purpose of disabusing Christians from mischaracterizations of the theme as well as offering a vision for what the Christian life could look like. In both simple and profound ways, holiness is a liberal art; it is the Christian way and shape of life.

Book Synopsis Communal Holiness in the Gospel of John by : Musa Victor Mdabuleni Kunene
Download or read book Communal Holiness in the Gospel of John written by Musa Victor Mdabuleni Kunene and published by Langham Monographs. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the author contends that communal holiness is the central theme of the vine metaphor in John 15:1-17. Illumination of the Johannine vine metaphor is illustrated by drawing on background information on the vine and its metaphorical usage in the Ancient Near East, Old Testament, and Second Temple Period and to suggest understanding in light of the communal holiness of the covenant people of God. Comparing the themes of holiness and corporateness pertinent to the covenant the book also reflects the covenant with Israel in relation to John’s understanding of the people of God. The notion of covenant, which embraces reference to the people of God as vine/vineyard in the Old Testament and Second Temple Period, underlies John’s vine metaphor. The book focuses research on ANE viticulture to determine the context(s) of when the vine was used to refer to Israel in a covenant relationship with God. In this historical context the Johannine vine metaphor receive fresh meaning and relevance for the people of God.
Book Synopsis Holiness and the Missio Dei by : Andy Johnson
Download or read book Holiness and the Missio Dei written by Andy Johnson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Holiness and the Missio Dei, Andy Johnson takes the reader on a biblical journey that explores the question of what holiness or sanctification has to do with God's mission in the world. He refuses to relegate the idea of humans becoming holy to the realm of individual inward piety or legalism, on the one hand, or to the realm of the impossible prior to Christ's return, on the other. Using a missional lens to guide the reader into a theological engagement with Scripture, Johnson argues that God's primary means of making us holy is through our participation in his saving, reconciling mission to bring creation to its intended destiny. As we become and remain part of an ecclesia, we are corporately and personally shaped by the Spirit into the image of the cruciform Son through participation in the missio Dei, and thereby are being restored into the image of the holy God--the imago Dei. This book is written primarily for church leaders, for students, and for academics who are interested in missional readings of Scripture. It will challenge those who read it to re-articulate the church's becoming holy as being inseparably connected to its active participation in God's mission.
Book Synopsis Help for Holiness by : Paul F. Evans
Download or read book Help for Holiness written by Paul F. Evans and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At one time there was a great deal of interest in the topic of holiness—but not so much anymore. Theological wrangling and impossible legalism has left many in the church frustrated and confused, with part of that confusion arising from idealism in the pulpit that rang hollow in the lives and experiences of ordinary believers. But what if there was significant help from God in the enterprise of living a morally triumphant life, where habitual sinning was not inevitable, and where the development of godly character was possible and found through a maturing relationship with God and growth in the Christian life? The apostle Paul certainly thought so. In Help for Holiness, author and senior pastor Paul F. Evans revisits the topic of holiness and explores Paul’s admonition that believers shouldn’t seek more rules (legalism) nor give in to moral pessimism that says we cannot help but sin every day in word, thought, and deed. Instead, through morally transformative justification and regeneration, followed by a commitment to the crucifixion of the old life in the death of Christ, we can be raised to new life, which, through ongoing surrender to the Spirit, can in fact produce the conduct and character God is looking for. In this postmodern world, we do not need to abandon an emphasis on righteous and holy living—God really has made a provision for us to succeed morally. Holiness was started by grace, and God will complete it in us by grace through the Spirit!
Book Synopsis Holiness: The Soul of Quakerism by : Carole Dale Spencer
Download or read book Holiness: The Soul of Quakerism written by Carole Dale Spencer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No single word conjures up religion, spirituality, or the sacred more than holiness. Yet its meaning in Christian theology, and application in Christian practice, has been greatly misunderstood. Few Quakers today of any persuasion would recognize the mystical depth of meaning the concept had for Quakers down through the centuries. Holiness: The Soul of Quakerism recovers the essential place of holiness theology in three centuries of Quaker history. It explores how Quaker spirituality was shaped in its inception by the experience of union with God, otherwise known in the Christian tradition as perfection, and examines selected figures from Quaker history who represent different emphases of holiness in the context of their time and culture.

Download or read book Loving God written by Charles W. Colson and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus tells us that the greatest commandment is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” But how many of us know what this looks like in daily life? Does loving God mean going to church, tithing, having regular prayer times? Is it a feeling in our hearts? A few years after Chuck Colson became a Christian, he realized that the more he learned about God’s love for him, the more he wanted to know how to love God. This book is the masterpiece Colson wrote after searching Scripture, history, and his own difficult experiences to answer his deepest question. He discovered that loving God is obeying God—rarely easy, sometimes inconvenient, often painful, and entirely satisfying. When we love God, we know the pleasure of living out our true calling. Billy Graham considers Loving God “one of the most spiritually satisfying books I have ever read.” Joni Eareckson Tada refers to it as “the complete volume on Christian living.” With fascinating stories and engaging theological insights, Loving God has been bringing people closer to Jesus for over thirty years. In this hour of opportunity for the church and for our own spiritual lives, Loving God will inspire you to love God with your whole being. It’s what you were created to do.
