Book excerpt: Learning Financial Accounting can often feel like learning a foreign language to students, in particular when terminology and procedure is piled on before core concepts are truly mastered. Introductory Financial Accounting for Business is an innovative approach that emphasizes critical thinking over the rote memorization of terms, such as “debits” and “credits”. The sequential learning model employed by the authors helps students see the bottom-line consequences of financial statements as it relates to the overall business, better preparing them for careers as accountants, entrepreneurs, and decision-makers. The authors focus initially on conceptual underpinnings -- the reasons why we approach procedures the way we do – rather than confusing students by front-loading the material with over-complicated details. Author Chris Edmonds has also created a highly popular and widely used series of video lectures, which engage students by clearly and charismatically going over each learning objective in a conversational style. These videos help reinforce important lessons and are always available for review. By developing this stronger foundation, students understand Accounting ideas more broadly and are able to ultimately learn procedural applications more quickly and accurately. With a straightforward writing style and highly engaging video lectures, this dynamic author team leads students down a streamlined learning path focused on critical thinking, clarity of concept, and applicability of material to the real world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1960s and 1970s a remarkable series of books was produced by academic staff in the field of accounting at the University of Sydney. It was a period when academic research was largely analytical rather than empirically-based. For the most part, the interests of academics at Sydney were largely directed at questioning the status quo - either in the way accounting or auditing was practiced, or in the conventional wisdom expressed in textbooks of the time. The Sydney Accounting Classics series reflects the diversity of interests of the 'Sydney school' at that time. It also recognises the tremendous impact of the foundation professor of accounting, R.J. Chambers. This reprint series ensures that the ideas developed during this period remain available to new generations of scholars and researchers. The Sydney Accounting Classics series is an initiative of the Accounting Foundation, in association with Sydney University Press. Consolidated Statements: A History and Analysis: This book covers the history of the development of the use of consolidated statements in the UK, US and Australia. Consolidation refers to the use of the 3 basic statements in accounting, covering assets, liabilities and equity.

Book excerpt: Accounting is the discipline with the oldest historical culture, being the first to be recognized by humanity when Adam and Eve were made to account for what they did in paradise. It is also the only discipline that will come into play in the Hereafter, where everybody would be raised up as an accountant - to account for all they have done during their life time on earth! Accounting is a service-providing discipline, with a rich theoretical background, which makes available information (especially financial) to guide various decision-making processes. Business owners, creditors, managers, prospective investors, government and its agencies, employees and even the general public seek accounting information to guide them when taking various informed decisions about reporting entities and the environment within which they operate. This book addresses the historical accounting culture, its theories as well as its practices. It is made up of fifteen chapters, covering various historical, theoretical and practical aspects of Accounting, ranging from accounting standardization to financial reporting. The book is an attempt to address some of the lacunae in advanced accounting issues, both in theory and in practice. Students of advanced accounting theory and practice at the professional and academic levels in Universities, Polytechnics and Professional Institutes would find the book an essential companion.

Book excerpt: Financial accounting theory has numerous practical applications and policy implications, for instance, international accounting standard setters are increasingly relying on theoretical accounting concepts in the creation of new standards; and corporate regulators are increasingly turning to various conceptual frameworks of accounting to guide regulation and the interpretation of accounting practices. The global financial crisis has also led to a new found appreciation of the social, economic and political importance of accounting concepts generally and corporate financial reporting in particular. For instance, the fundamentals of capital market theory (i.e. market efficiency) and measurement theory (i.e. fair value) have received widespread public and regulatory attention. This comprehensive, authoritative volume provides a prestige reference work which offers students, academics, regulators and practitioners a valuable resource containing the current scholarship and practice in the established field of financial accounting theory.

Book excerpt: Creating the 'Big Mess' and its sequel Accounting for Crises use Marx's theory of capitalism to explain why there is no generally accepted theory of financial accounting, and explore the consequences, by studying the history of American accounting theory from c.1900 to 2007. The answer, Creating the 'Big Mess', is first that while late-19th century British accounting principles, founded on the going-concern concept, provided an objective basis for holding management accountable to shareholders for its stewardship of capital, and were accepted by the nascent American profession, they are inchoate. Second, Irving Fisher's economic theory of accounting, based on the assertion that present value is the accountants' measurement ideal, which is subjective, framed early-20th century American accounting theory, which undermined British principles, making them incoherent. In an unregulated, pro-business environment, leading theorists, particularly Henry Rand Hatfield and William A. Paton, Jr., became authorities for management discretion, creating the 'big mess' Hatfield saw in late-1920s American accounting. Accounting for Crises examines the roles of Fisher's theory in promoting the speculation leading to the 1929 Great Crash, aggravating the Great Depression, hindering accounting regulation from the 1930s, producing the Financial Accounting Standard Board's conceptual framework, and facilitating the 2007-2008 Global Financial Crisis.
