Book excerpt: In a fallen London, how far will one man go to save his family – and himself… ...or is it already too late? Trapped in his top floor mansion block apartment in Denmark Hill, South East London, can The Man escape and pick his way through the crumbling ruins of the city, avoiding the violent gangs that now vie for supremacy, and find his heavily pregnant ex-wife? Can a belated act of heroism wash him clean of his sins, or is he too far gone? In a world where civilization has fallen, what hope is there for the future? Corona is the deliciously dark and dystopian Sci-Fi, perhaps even Cli-Fi, debut novel from David Arrowsmith, author of Nevada Noir: A Trilogy of Short Stories. Corona is a story about the dark – and the light – inside all of us. It’s about man’s inhumanity, and humanity. It’s a story in which the threat, the danger, comes from within us – not from the undead or vampires or even a virus, but from our neighbours, our friends, even ourselves. Corona combines elements of dystopian fiction with the literary survival horror of works like J.G. Ballard’s High Rise and Concrete Island. It’s the perfect read for fans of The Road, I Am Legend, The Last Of Us, Children of Men, The Walking Dead, Mad Max or 28 Days Later.

Book excerpt: Dr. Samantha Parker locks herself inside a dark decaying morgue during a virus outbreak. Using a rope, she locks the heavy metal door behind her. Cold and alone, she enters the ugly reality of mass graves on Hart Island during her forensic pathology training. Dr. David Falkner, a medical examiner and attending physician, will soon open an unexpected door into Samantha's life as it spins into chaos. Her parents face a similar raging virus and the ensuing panic on board their luxury cruise near Santorini, Greece, and Samantha's boyfriend is about to meet the "bat woman," a real-life research scientist in a Biosafety Level 4 Lab where the global pandemic may have originated. Life, science, and God intersect, exposing blame and guilt, passion and pain, redemption and forgiveness. Medical facts and real events underpin the narrative propelled along a real-life COVID-19 timeline. Written by a breast cancer expert, Dr. Apple provides the reader confidence in knowing what really happened with COVID-19 and how the race for vaccines unfolds. The author's theological perspective is both intriguing and refreshing, and her own experiences of racism, tragedy, and courage contribute to the story.

In the land of Corona, the roads are unsafe to travel, as goblins and bloodthirsty Powries seek out human prey; and, in this savage world, princes feast while peasants starve, and two religions battle for control. A monk, Bran Dynard, returns from his mission in a far-off land with two prizes: a book of mystical knowledge and a new wife, the beautiful and mystical Sen Wi. But the world he left behind has changed, and Bran must now decide who he can trust, and where he should place his faith . . .

It follows the exploits of a Chinese virologist, studying at an American university where he meets an American lawyer, who follows him back to Wuhan in China. He deliberately cultivates a friendship with an Australian virologist, resulting in a fetish-driven relationship pursued lifelong. The novel explores the intentions of the protagonists who undertake actions for different reasons which are incompatible with each other. This incompatibility requires them to make moral judgments and twisted choices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on an ethnographic study of novel readers in Denmark and the UK during the Covid-19 pandemic, this book provides a snapshot of a phenomenal moment in modern history. The ethnographic approach shows what no historical account of books published during the pandemic will be able to capture, namely the movement of readers between new purchases and books long kept in their collections. The book follows readers who have tuned into novels about plague, apocalypse, and racial violence, but also readers whose taste for older novels, and for re-reading novels they knew earlier in their lives, has grown. Alternating between chapters that analyse single texts that were popular (Albert Camus's The Plague, Ali Smith's Summer, Charlotte Brönte's Jane Eyre) and others that describe clusters of, for example, dystopian fiction and nature writing, this work brings out the diverse quality of the Covid-19 bookshelf. Time is of central importance to this study, both in terms of the time of lockdown and the temporality of reading itself within this wider disrupted sense of time. By exploring these varied experiences, this book investigates the larger question of how the consumption of novels depends on and shapes people's experience of non-work time, providing a specific lens through which to examine the phenomenology of reading more generally. This timely work also negotiates debates in the study of reading that distinguish theoretically between critical reading and reading for pleasure, between professional and lay reading. All sides of the sociological and literary debate must be brought to bear in understanding what readers tell us about what novels have meant to them in this complex historical moment.

The sudden shut down of the travel industry also affected those who specialized on helping people enjoy their dream vacations and so many were others were made to work from home or became unemployed due to the subsequent depression of the economy. This once in a lifetime experience has both devastated people and unified them. One thing we know is that writing and sharing stories heals. Grab your copy and enjoy nineteen tales of COVID-19.

Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Looming Tower, and the pandemic novel The End of October: an unprecedented, momentous account of Covid-19—its origins, its wide-ranging repercussions, and the ongoing global fight to contain it "A book of panoramic breadth ... managing to surprise us about even those episodes we … thought we knew well … [With] lively exchanges about spike proteins and nonpharmaceutical interventions and disease waves, Wright’s storytelling dexterity makes all this come alive.” —The New York Times Book Review From the fateful first moments of the outbreak in China to the storming of the U.S. Capitol to the extraordinary vaccine rollout, Lawrence Wright’s The Plague Year tells the story of Covid-19 in authoritative, galvanizing detail and with the full drama of events on both a global and intimate scale, illuminating the medical, economic, political, and social ramifications of the pandemic. Wright takes us inside the CDC, where a first round of faulty test kits lost America precious time . . . inside the halls of the White House, where Deputy National Security Adviser Matthew Pottinger’s early alarm about the virus was met with confounding and drastically costly skepticism . . . into a Covid ward in a Charlottesville hospital, with an idealistic young woman doctor from the town of Little Africa, South Carolina . . . into the precincts of prediction specialists at Goldman Sachs . . . into Broadway’s darkened theaters and Austin’s struggling music venues . . . inside the human body, diving deep into the science of how the virus and vaccines function—with an eye-opening detour into the history of vaccination and of the modern anti-vaccination movement. And in this full accounting, Wright makes clear that the medical professionals around the country who’ve risked their lives to fight the virus reveal and embody an America in all its vulnerability, courage, and potential. In turns steely-eyed, sympathetic, infuriated, unexpectedly comical, and always precise, Lawrence Wright is a formidable guide, slicing through the dense fog of misinformation to give us a 360-degree portrait of the catastrophe we thought we knew.

Book excerpt: Is it anything like the ten Plagues of Egypt? Well, fairly close. 2020 was a year like no other in history both modern and "ancient" (that includes the much referenced 1918 Spanish flu pandemic). A cauldron of circumstances combined to make the kickoff year to a new decade one of the nadirs of the twenty-first century (which is really saying something, considering how many there have been thus far). Yet 2020 did not merely "end" on December 31st, but will persist for the foreseeable future with its ripple effect aftermath. In Corona(tion) Year, Vol. 1: Short Stories, the unfolding of the pandemic as it happened is explored through narrative fiction that both stylizes and accurately depicts a world gone stark-raving mad, having absolutely no idea how to function or treat one another when necessary restrictions vastly reined in everyday selfishness and frivolity.
