Book excerpt: The publication of "Cornish Today" by Kernewek dre Lyther in 1995 was a landmark event in the Cornish Revival. In that book, Professor Williams offered the first professional analysis of the various systems of Cornish in use, and also outlined his suggested emendations for Unified Cornish. The present revised edition makes this most important work available to those who may have missed the earlier editions. As companion volumes to "Cornish Today," two further works by Professor Williams are being published: "Writings on Revived Cornish" and "Towards Authentic Cornish." Nicholas Williams was born in Essex. While still at school he taught himself Cornish and became a bard of the Cornish Gorsedd for proficiency in the Cornish language in Newquay in 1962, taking the bardic name Golvan. He won first prize in the Gorsedd verse competition in 1961, 1964, and 1965. He read classics, English language, and Celtic in Oxford and was awarded a PhD in Celtic in Queen's University, Belfast in 1972. He is currently Associate Professor in the School of Irish, Celtic Studies, Folklore and Linguistics in University College, Dublin. He has written widely on the Celtic languages and literatures, in particular Irish, Manx and Cornish. He published "Cornish Today" in 1995, "Clappya Kernowek" in 1997, "English-Cornish Dictionary" in 2000 (second edition 2006) and Testament Noweth in 2002. He won first prize in the Gorsedd verse competitions of 1997, 1998, and 1999. With Graham Thomas he has produced an editio princeps of the recently discovered Cornish play, "Bewnans Ke," which was published by the University of Exeter Press in October 2006. Philip Payton, Professor of Cornish Studies, University of Exeter, has described Nicholas Williams as "the foremost international authority" in the Cornish language."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I can't think of a more enjoyable or more illuminating guide to Cornwall than Petroc Trelawny, who knows it intimately, loves it deeply, and shares it generously' - THE REVEREND RICHARD COLES It would be hard to think of a more thoroughly Cornish name than Petroc Trelawny. His first name is shared with one of Cornwall's most celebrated saints, his second is the name of its unofficial national anthem. But when a stranger challenges the Radio 3 presenter on his ancestry, he is inspired to return to the lands of his boyhood to rediscover the place where he grew up, and attempt to confirm if he still belongs there. Part history, part memoir, this is a deeply felt exploration of Cornwall - past, present and future. Petroc embarks on a slow journey that sees him visit old mine workings, ancient churches, sites where new technology was forged, and places where poets, musicians, architects and film makers have worked to shape Cornwall's cultural identity. He explores the Tamar, the river that marks out the Cornish frontier, and holds a finger up to winds of change, exploring the collapse of Methodism, the decline of the Cornish language, and the complex , sometimes lucrative, sometimes destructive, relationship with tourism. As he travels by road, rail and foot, he conjures marvellously vivid figures and scenes from memory, telling the stories of a loving family full of mysteries and a landscape still redolent of 'Cornish otherness'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this student-friendly text, Jones and Singh explore the phenomenon of language change, with a particular focus on the social contexts of its occurrence and possible motivations, including speakers' intentions and attitudes. Presenting new or little-known data, the authors draw a distinction between "unconscious" and "deliberate" change. The discussion on "unconscious" change considers phenomena such as the emergence and obsolescence of individual languages, whilst the sections on "deliberate" change focus on issues of language planning, including the strategies of language revival and revitalization movements. There is also a detailed exploration of what is arguably the most extreme instance of "deliberate" change; language invention for real-world use. Examining an extensive range of language situations, Exploring Language Change makes a clear, but often ignored distinction between concepts such as language policy and planning, and language revival and revitalization. Also featured are a number of case studies which demonstrate that real-life language use is often much more complex than theoretical abstractions might suggest. This is a key text for students on a variety of courses, including sociolinguistics, historical linguistics and language policy and planning.

Book excerpt: "Mebyon Kernow - the Party for Cornwall has been at the forefront of the campaign for Cornish self-government for over 50 years. This is the first book to fully address the issues of political nationalism in Cornwall. It traces the growth of a Cornish national consciousness throughout the twentieth century, the foundation of MK in 1951 and its evolution from a cultural pressure group into a fully-fledged political party. Based on a range of primary sources and interviews, this book investigates Mebyon Kernow's role within the wider Cornish movement, which also generated two breakaway political parties, a revived medieval institution of self-government, a range of short-lived pressure groups and, most recently, 50,000 individual declarations calling for a Cornish Assembly." -- BACK COVER.

Book excerpt: Standing alone at the bottom tip of England and despite the enormous influx of tourists it receives each year, Cornwall boasts many unique traditions. This volume touches on the wide variety of legends, songs and stories and their relationship with the rugged landscape: from standing stones and tales of sea-monsters and mermaids to ghosts, fairies and giants. The book looks at pagan ceremonies and old traditions, and the very Cornish love of singing. It further discusses the Cornish tongue, and the old language of Cornwall. And, of course, no study of Cornwall would be complete without some consideration of King Arthur and his legacy upon the folklore of the county.
