Book excerpt: “[A] combination of history and meaning behind favorite playground games and the verses . . . virtually guaranteed to make you laugh and sing” (Fiona Shoop, author of How to Deal in Antiques). This delightful book records favorite childhood games and recalls forgotten rhymes. With more children suffering from obesity, Susan Brewer looks at the social games we used to play from skipping to chase games that used up our energy during recess. Instead of costly computer games, we used rhyming games, played Jacks, and showed our balancing skills during competitive games of hopscotch. A charming book, full of anecdotes and nostalgia for how we remember our favorite place at school—the playground.

Book excerpt: Taher Dajani remembers playing soccer with his neighborhood friends in his idyllic city of Jaffa, Palestine. But on April 24, 1948, when Taher was fourteen, his carefree lifestyle came to an abrupt end. His family, with little money and few possessions, escaped the city by sea in a crowded fishing trawler as Zionist militia encircled Jaffa. Taher's father believed the family was in danger, so overnight they became refugees. The family took refuge in Syria and later in Libya, which enabled them to rebuild their lives. They experienced grief at leaving a place they loved and felt a great sense of loss and displacement, but with perseverance the Dajanis began anew. From Palestine to America describes the family's experiences and their determination. Taher Dajani writes this memoir about his new life after leaving his beloved Jaffa-from his days as a college student in Chicago to his work with the central bank in Libya-and his position with the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC. Even though it has been sixty years since the Dajani family were forced to flee Palestine, they remember their heritage and roots, and Jaffa, Palestine, will forever be in their hearts.

Book excerpt: I’m here already, in the bleak, awful hour on Dudley Flats in which the final dereliction of Elsie Williams will come to pass. I’m beginning with it, so you won’t be under any illusion as to how it ends. In Blue Lake, David Sornig examines how the 8km-square zone to the west of central Melbourne became the city's blind spot. Once a fertile wetland with a large blue saltwater lagoon, it passed through various incarnations: from boneyards and rubbish tips; through the Depression-era Dudley Flats shanty town; to the modern-day docks. Through it all, one thing that has persisted is its uncanny, liminal quality. As well as being a social history and a psychogeographic contemplation, Blue Lake is a biography of three specific characters: Elsie Williams, a Bendigo-born singer of Afro-Caribbean origin; Jack Peacock, the king of Dudley Flats’ tip-scavenging economy; and Lauder Heinrich Rogge, a German hermit who lived for decades with sixty dogs on a stranded ship. By charting the rises and falls in their individual fortunes, Sornig reveals much about the race and class divides of their times and explores questions about those strange and singular places in the urban fabric where chaos is difficult to contain. In masterful prose, Sornig reveals cracks in the colonial mythology of the ordered vision of progressive, urban Melbourne — a place where identities, both personal and public, have never quite been resolved. In doing so, he encourages readers to look harder at the places they live in — at the streets they walk, the buildings they enter, the empty spaces they pass — and to see in them intricate layers of time and history that have been hidden from view.
