Book excerpt: Between 1720 and 1920 at least 60,000 women and girls worked in the mines, quarries and clay works of Cornwall and Devon. They carried out hard, skilled and specialised work, which was a crucial part of the dressing operations. The author has carefully researched their working lives and home-life, their characteristics and the occupational hazards they encountered. How essential were they to the industry? What were their working conditions? How much did they earn? What did they do with the very little spare time and money they had? As the mines closed, where did they go and what happened to them? This is the record of a remarkable group of women, plus some individual accounts of the few whose stories have survived. In this second edition the material has been both revised and expanded. The geographical scope now extended to Dartmoor, and the Teign and Exe Valleys. There is also a more detailed coverage of the tin streams of the late 19th century.

Book excerpt: This book gives glimpses into the life and work of the women and girls who worked at the mines on the north coast of Cornwall (between Portreath and Padstow). Female employment was widespread here, with the earliest accounts coming from the late 18th century copper mines. It continued through until the early 20th century, with the last bal maidens working at the tin mines in St Agnes. This was a significant mining area with complex mineralogy, so bal maidens dressed lead, silver, zinc, iron and clay, as well as copper and tin. In addition to describing their work, there is an assessment of the numbers of bal maidens employed, and an overview of women and girls from key mining families. There are also accounts of a six year-old bal maiden who lived to be one hundred years old, and a Portreath ore dresser who helped in the discovery of copper in Australia, as well as the tragic story of the bal maiden who died in a boiler explosion, at United Hills Mine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to look specifically at the movement of Cornish men and women to and from the Caribbean from the early days of colonialism. A fascinating subject for those with an interest in all things Cornish, be they in Cornwall, in the Caribbean, or in the wider Cornish diaspora. The Cornish in the Caribbean is the first study to tell the stories of some of the many Cornish men and women who went to the Caribbean. Some became wealthy plantation owners, while others came as indentured servants and labourers. Cornish men were active in the armed services, taking part in the numerous sea and land battles fought by the competing European powers throughout the region. Cornish officers and crew sailed on the ships of the Falmouth Packet Service which took the mail to and from the Caribbean. Methodism was strong in Cornwall and Methodist missionaries and their wives came to the Caribbean to evangelise both the enslaved and the newly free. The most striking transfer of Cornish skills to the Caribbean was to be found in mining. As Cornish mining declined, and the Great Emigration of miners and their families got underway, Cornish mining engineers, captains and miners went out to mines throughout the Caribbean. “Meticulously researched and highly readable” Bridget Brereton, Professor Emerita, University of the West Indies.

Book excerpt: Morag Smith's Spoil is a rich and earthy pamphlet harvested from the hills of Cornwall. Smith evokes the altered landscape and poverty of her home county, its tin mines and farms, singing of a singularity that mirrors her own singularity. Smith's poetry is informed by her Zen Buddhist practise, always attentive to the world around her, a poet 'swimming harder / trying to touch that impossible line'.

Book excerpt: The Hammers of Towan: A Nineteenth-Century Cornish Family centres around the life of the author's great-grandfather Philip Henry Hammer, his three wives, and his children by his first wife, Jane Opie. The book tells the story of a now vanished world - the life and times of a 19th century Cornish farmer, the tenant of Towan Farm, near St. Austell. Here family life revolved around the big granite-floored farmhouse kitchen where Jane prepared traditional Cornish fare using old recipes - many of which are included in the book. Running Towan as a profitable enterprise was hard work but, throughout the year, the family took part in the many local festivals and traditions that provided a welcome chance to celebrate the changing seasons. The family story plays out against the background of Cornwall's mining industry, once vibrant but now in decline. As the local economy continued to fail, the migration of Cornish men and women in search of employment grew, and all nine of the Philip Henry and Jane's children left Cornwall in search of work, making new lives for themselves and their families. They settled 'up country' in London, in Wales, in South Africa, and in Australia, and some eventually returned to Cornwall where, no matter how long they been gone, they always returned to Towan.

The Cornish family, in its individuality, in its far-flung breadth and with its sense of worldwide community, is a vigorous example of this truth. In this magnificent book, Dr Bernard Deacon explores who we are, our forefathers and our descendants, where we come from and where we are headed and how these major themes are expressed in the meaning of our names.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection explores how migrants played a major role in the creation and settlement of the British Empire, by focusing on a series of Australian case studies. Despite their shared experiences of migration and settlement, migrants nonetheless often exhibited distinctive cultural identities, which could be deployed for advantage. Migration established global mobility as a defining feature of the Empire. Ethnicity, class and gender were often powerful determinants of migrant attitudes and behaviour. This volume addresses these considerations, illuminating the complexity and diversity of the British Empire’s global immigration story. Since 1788, the propensity of the populations of Britain and Ireland to immigrate to Australia varied widely, but what this volume highlights is their remarkable diversity in character and impact. The book also presents the opportunities that existed for other immigrant groups to demonstrate their loyalty as members of the (white) Australian community, along with notable exceptions which demonstrated the limits of this inclusivity.

Rebecca sets to work restoring the home to its former glory, but as she peels back the layers of paint and grime, she uncovers even more buried secrets—secrets from a time when the Second World War was raging, when Olivia was a young woman, and when both romance and danger lurked around every corner... A sweeping and utterly spellbinding tale of a young woman’s courage in the face of war and the lengths to which she’ll go to protect those she loves against the most unexpected of enemies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Cornwall has for centuries been the source of migrants to all parts of the world. This has generated a broad literature on Cornish emigration and the Cornish abroad, much of it concentrated on the better-known destinations of the USA, Australia, and South Africa; related to the international mining industry of the 19th century; and dominated by men and their stories. Appleby breaks the mould by examining the lives of female indentured servants, wives of mariners, miners, and missionaries, and ‘ladies of quality’, who, for many different reasons, spent time in the Caribbean. There has been a gathering tide of research and literature into the lives of Cornish women in recent years but, so far, less work has concentrated on the women of the Cornish diaspora, so this new book is a very welcome addition to that literature.” Dr Lesley Trotter, Honorary Research Fellow, Institute of Cornish Studies, University of Exeter. Wives - Mothers - Daughters - Widows is the first book to examine the lives of Cornish women who left their homes to spend time in the Caribbean colonies.

Tin mining has existed in Cornwall and parts of Devon since before the Romans arrived in Britain. In this book, historian Anthony Burton explores the region’s tin mining industry from its earliest period through to the present day. A specialist in the history of technology, Burton examines the evolution of extraction methods from primitive pick and shovel operations to the later use of explosives, the rise of steam power, and beyond. Burton also looks at the changing politics and economics of the tin mining industry over the centuries.

Before books were widely available, wandering ‘droll tellers’ used to spread Cornish insight and humour to all parts of the Duchy – exchanging their tales for food and shelter. Anthony James was one such droll teller, and this collection follows him as he makes his way around Cornwall one glorious summer. Richly illustrated with hand-drawn images and woodcuts, Cornish Folk Tales will appeal to anyone captivated by this beautiful land and its resident kindly giants, mischievous piskeys, seductive mermaids, bold knights and barnacle-encrusted sea captains.
