Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corneille's Le Cid This edition of Le Cid aims especially at emphasizing its literary significance. For this reason it contains the articles written by Corneille in answer to his critics, and in which he judges his own work. The text follows that of the Marty-Laveaux edition (in the Hachette series of "Les Grands Ecrivains de la France"), reproduced from Corneille's last revision of 1682. In volume iii. of this edition may be found the variants to the play, the lines of Castro's Las Mocedades del Cid which were more particularly imitated by Corneille, and an analysis of the Spanish drama. The history of the French stage after 1550 and previous to 1630 is considered at length in E. Rigal's "Alexandre Hardy" (Paris, 1889). To understand the literary bearing of Le Cid and Corneille's dramatic ideas at the time, one should also consult the Spanish original (Las Mocedades del Cid, primera parte, edited by E. Merimee, Toulouse, 1890). For historical data concerning the hero and his surroundings there is nothing more recent than R. Dozy's "Recherches sur l'histoire de l'Espagne" (third edition, Leyden, 1881). I can find no reliable account of the Cid's family. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cid Theme in France in 1600 Since the Observations sur le Cid of de Scudery, the literary indebtedness of Corneille's Cid to Guillen de Castro's Las M ocedades del Cid has been minutely traced by a host of critics. In accord ance with their preferences for classical or for more romantic forms of art, or in accordance with their national sympathies, they have entered wearisome pleas for the superiority of the Spanish or of the French poet. In the estimation of some German and Spanish critics and of a few modern Scuderys, Corneille is only an imi tator, hardly more than the translator of Las Mocedades del Cid; to most French critics, on the other hand, he remains a genius who did de Castro the honor of transforming his inflated and digressive play into a restrained and classical masterpiece. Nearly all critics, however, agree in one respect: Corneille has intensified the dra matic effect of the play by concentrating upon the moral problem of Chimene, upon her desire for vengeance and her love for the man who has killed her father in a duel. The comparison of both texts confirms this View. To allow the development of the internal drama, Corneille has markedly diminished the number of incidents; he has given a deeper and a more finely shaded analysis of the motives of his characters. Ernest Merimee, for instance, restates this as follows in the preface to his edition of the first part of Las Mocedades del Cid: Le principal m'rite de Corneille n'est certaine ment ni dans l' invention, ni neme dans la perfection de chaque partie, mais dans ce fait qu'il a mis en une lumiere plus vive encore que n' avait fait Castro cc qui fait le fond et 1' int'r't 'ternel du drame: lo lutte de la passion et da devoir, de 1' amour et de l' honneur, chez Rodrigue et chez Chimeric. Book excerpt: Richard Wilbur's translations of the great French dramas have been a boon to acting troupes, students of French literature and history, and theater lovers. He continues this wonderful work with two plays from Pierre Corneille: Le Cid is Corneille's most famous play, a tragedy set in Seville that illuminates the dangers of being bound by honor and the limits of romantic love; The Liar is a farce, set in France and dealing with love, misperceptions, and downright falsifications, which ends, of course, happily ever after. These two plays, together in one volume, work in perfect tandem to showcase the breadth of Corneille's abilities. Taking us back to the time he portrays as well as the time of his greatest success as a playwright, they remind us that the delights to be found on the French stage are truly ageless.

Book excerpt: Le Cid is a five-act French tragicomedy written by Pierre Corneille, first performed in December 1636 at the Théâtre du Marais in Paris and published the same year. It is based on Guillén de Castro's play Las Mocedades del Cid. Castro's play in turn is based on the legend of El Cid. An enormous popular success, Corneille's Le Cid was the subject of a heated polemic over the norms of dramatic practice known as the Querelle du Cid (Quarrel of The Cid). Cardinal Richelieu's Académie française acknowledged the play's success, but determined that it was defective, in part because it did not respect the classical unities.

Though they never disavow their love for one another, revenge is deemed more important to each. Corneille's play sparked much dispute about dramatic method.
