Book excerpt: Field experiments were conducted in 1969 and 1970 to determine the effects of corn hybrid, rate of applied nitrogen and plant population on nutrient uptake, yield, several yield components and several agronomic characteristics of corn (Zea mays L.). The corn was planted at equidistant intervals with plant spacings ranging from 25,4 to 50.8 on, the range of plant populations was 39,520 to 158,080 plants/ha. Nitrogen was broadcast in 67 kg increments (0 to 538 kg of nitrogen/ha) at planting as ammonium nitrate. The corn hybrids used wereN6 x B14, N31 x N28, N28 x C103, Nebr. 808 and Ner. 501D. Irrigation water was supplied as necessary. Ramrod and atrazine were applied for weed control at the rate of 3.36 and 1.12 kh/ha respectively. The parameters measured include the following: uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulfur (percentage uptake, uptake/plant and uptake/unit area) and dry matter accumulation at the 6-, 11-leaf and at the silking stage were measured. Crain yield, the number of cars and plants per plot and the number of ears per 100 plants, shelling percentage, dry matter of the graing, car lenght, ear width, 100 kernel weight, grain protein, dates of 50% tassel and 50% silked, and dates of the first and last pollen shed were the measured parameters. Plant height, stalk diameter, leaf area and LAI were measured only in 1969. Lodging, breakage and stripping damage were measured only in 1970 becuase of severe wind damage to the crop. As a result of decreased plant size, the uptake of nutrition...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a given year within a region, the optimum plant populations for 0.38- and 0.76-m row widths were not different. Row width effects on the R:FR ratio were significant at one sampling date in each year. There was a trend for 0.76-m plots to have a higher R:FR ratio compared to 0.38-m plots across sampling dates. At all sampling dates in 1998 and 1999, the 93 860 plant ha−1 plots had lower R:FR ratio measurements. The erect-leaf hybrid, P3394, had higher R:FR ratio for most sampling dates when compared to the horizontal leaf-type hybrids, P3376 and P3618 in 1998 and 1999. These data suggest that canopy light quality is different for those hybrids that demonstrate upright leaf architecture compared to those with prostrate leaf architecture.

This book was released on 1974 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two field corn experiments were conducted on a Woodburn silt loam soil near Corvallis, Oregon, in 1972-1973 to investigate the effects of certain soil management practices on the yield and performance of corn (Zea mays L.). Experiment I involved variables that included three corn row spacings (76, 114, and 152 cm) with annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) interplanted at three different dates between the corn rows. Average dry matter corn yield of 17.6 m ton/ha obtained in the 76 cm spaced rows decreased by 16% as the row spacing increased to 114 cm. Increasing the row spacing from 114 to 152 cm did not affect corn yield. Corn yield was reduced when grass was interplanted in the widely spaced corn rows. A 35% corn plant yield decrease resulted when grass was planted on May 25 in the 152 cm wide corn rows as compared with the 76 cm row spacing. A further 15% reduction in corn yields occurred when ryegrass intercropped in the 152 cm rows was compared with yield from 76 cm rows which had no grass intercrop. Intercropping with ryegrass had no adverse effect on corn yield provided that such grasses were planted on July 24 or October 7 in the 76 cm spaced corn rows. Previous field history and the relatively high nitrogen taken up by the combined corn and grass crops suggested that the experimental area contained considerable residual soil nitrogen. Experiment II aimed at elucidating the effects of rate and method of applied nitrogen have on the yields from differently spaced corn. A 14% increase in dry matter yield of corn was obtained when row spacing was reduced from 91 to 61 cm. Moisture loss due to evaporation from the soil surface in the wide corn rows was higher than in the narrow spaced corn, Small dry matter corn yield increases were observed as nitrogen fertilizer rates increased from 140 to 196 Kg N/ha or from 196 to 252 Kg N/ha, respectively. The significant corn yield increase resulting from 252 Kg N/ha over the 140 Kg N/ha rates represented an 8% increase. No differences in corn yield were noted due to methods of nitrogen application.

Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted in there field environments with the following objectives: (1) to evaluate the progress from seven cycles of reciprocal recurrent selection in Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic (BSSS(R) and Iowa Corn Borer Synthetic #1 (BSCB(R) and six cycles of half-sib family selection in 'Alph' (i.e. BS12) maize (Zea mays L.) populations, (2) to compare the response of unimproved and improved maize variety hybrids to different levels of nitrogen fertilizer and plant density, and (3) to evaluate the influence of nitrogen and plant density on the morphological and physiological traits associated with recurrent selection for grain yield in maize. Each experiment was grown in randomized complete blocks with a split-split-plot arrangement and two replications. Nitrogen fertilizer levels (0,90,180, and 270 kg N/ha) were main plots, plant densities (39,500; 59,300; 79,000; and 98,800 plants/ha) were subplots, and five variety hybrids, BSSS(R)CO x BSCB1(R)CO, BSSS(R)C5 x BSCB1(R)C5, BSSS(R)C7 x BSCB1(C7, BS12C0 x B14A, and BS12C6 x B14A, were randomized as sub-subplots. We obtained data on grain yield and grain-yield components, flowering traits, plant traits, leaf area, leaf orientation, lodging, dry-matter productivity, and harvest index.(...).
