There are thousands of farmers in the United States who in the last few years have doubled the profit they used to make on their corn crop, by harvesting the whole plant - stalks, leaves, and all - yet there are tens of thousands of other farmers who still snap or husk their corn in the field letting the stalks and blades go largely to waste. It has been demonstrated beyond a doubt that when properly harvested corn fodder is 'as nutritious as good hay. The farmer who would receive the full value of his crop should secure this fodder with as-much care as he gives his hay, taking care that it is harvested at the proper period, and not allowed to have the nutrients it contains leached out by rains or injured by frost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prentice-Hall Tax Service for 1919 This allowance is not based upon the difference between the actual war cost of such facilities and what they would have cost at pre-war prices. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. As the rule is expressed in Article 183 of the Regulations: The total amount to be extinguished by amortization, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value (either for sale or for use as part of the plant or equipment of a going business) under stable post war. Book excerpt: James Oliver sold his first "chilled" plow in 1870--"chilled" because the cast iron was cooled quickly with water to harden the metal and strengthen the plow. And when Oliver Chilled Plow Works merged with the Hart-Parr Company in 1929, the might of capital, expertise, and engineering resources came together to create one of the most successful and revered small tractor manufacturers of all time. This book follows the Oliver tractor from its inception through its development over the years, until the last model rolled off the assembly line in 1976. A story of entrepreneurship and industry, of machinery and American know-how, this illustrated history captures the spirit of Oliver farm equipment as its tractors and crawlers, hay balers and threshers turned American farmland to gold. Throughout, brilliant color photographs and historical images bring the story of the Oliver tractor vividly and vibrantly to life.

Book excerpt: The Organic Grain Grower is an invaluable resource for both home-scale and commercial producers interested in expanding their resiliency and drop diversity through growing their own grains. Longtime farmer and organic pioneer Jack Lazor covers how to grow and store wheat, barley, oats, corn, dry beans, soybeans, oilseeds, grasses, nutrient-dense forages, and lesser-known cereals. In addition, Lazor argues the importance of integrating grains on the organic farm (not to mention within the local food system) for reasons of biodiversity and whole-farm management. The Organic Grain Grower provides information on wide-ranging topics, from nutrient density and building soil fertility to machinery and grinding grains for livestock rations.--COVER.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Hollander’s work has been provoking debate for over four decades. This book brings together key contributions of recent years, in addition to some brand new pieces. The essays are introduced by a Preface in which Hollander reflects on his past work and reactions to it. Highlights include two issues of particular current relevance. Conspicuous is an extensive chapter regarding Adam Smith’s often neglected arguments for government intervention in the economy to correct market failures, and his critical view of the business class as an anti-social force. Important economists considered in relation to Adam Smith’s position on the role of the state include Jeremy Bentham and the Scottish-Canadian John Rae. Similarly of high present-day interest is a re-examination of Karl Marx’s theory of exploitation, or the notion of profits as "embezzlement," demonstrating Marx’s effective abandonment of this perspective in the case of the small active businessman as distinct from the major joint-stock corporation. Other papers demonstrate the close intellectual relationship between David Ricardo and Thomas Robert Malthus; the extensive common ground between the British school and the French under the leadership of Jean-Baptiste Say; the failure of a so-called anti-Ricardian opposition in Britain represented by Samuel Bailey; and the denial of a sharp discontinuity between "classical" and later "neo-classical" economics. Finally, several biographical essays are included as well as an extension of the autobiographical account appearing in Collected Essays II.
