Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Euichang Kim focuses upon the phrase “the fear of God”, drawn from 2 Corinthians' exhortation to reconcile with God. As opposed to these words appearing from no particular source, Kim points to the wider contexts of Old Testament passages quoted by Paul, and demonstrates that God's eschatological promises – in particular his coming judgment, his promise to redeem his people, and the prospect of a new covenant – are intertwined with this motif of “fear”. Beginning with an analysis of the meaning of fear in both the Old Testament and the New, Kim proceeds to the context of fear within 2 Corinthians, Scripture, the writings of Second Temple Judaism and the very eschatology of Paul, suggesting that it stems from an awareness of God's judgment to come and serves to motivate righteous behavior. Kim finally argues that, in the context of 2 Corinthians, the “fear of God” functions as the proper response to God's saving acts in Christ, and provides motivation for believers to pursue a holy life in anticipation of the eschatological judgment to come.

Book excerpt: A deep study on the doctrine of eternal security Does one moment of faith secure a person's eternal destiny with God--even if that person later stops following and trusting in Jesus? Or does a person have to keep on trusting and following Jesus to remain in a saving relationship with God? Now expanded with new chapters and research, this landmark book continues to offer one of the most penetrating studies on the controversial doctrine of eternal security, perseverance, and apostasy in the New Testament. Calling into question the popular "once saved, always saved" belief, internationally respected pastor and scholar Dr. Robert Shank reveals that the question we should be asking is not, "Is the believer secure?" but rather, "What does it mean to be a believer?" Straightforward, thorough, and grounded in biblical understanding, this book warns Christians about dangers that could potentially lead a believer to become an unbeliever (falling away from faith) and share in the unbeliever's eternal condemnation.

This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Heavenly Citizens" series serves as a tool to help the Christian understand not only what the Bible teaches us, but also how to study the Bible. Explaining what the Bible teaches is like giving someone a fish to eat. Teaching him how to study the Bible is like teaching someone how to fish so he can feed himself. Both approaches are essential to developing spiritual maturity. "1 Corinthians" is the twelfth volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series. The Apostle Paul begins with a greeting from God to the Church in Corinth. Then he jumps right into the fray, for a fray it is in that church. Serious church discipline is unavoidable, if this local church is to keep its standing as one of the Lord's lampstands in the Church. What would you think, should you visit a local church one Sunday morning, and everyone there was making strange noises all at the same time? Most of us would likely head for the hills pronto! Sadly, but that was a problem in the Church of Corinth. Also, they claimed to believe the Gospel, but they didn't believe in a physical, bodily resurrection of the dead. What do they think happened to Jesus on a Sunday morn circa 27 A.D.? And then there was the situation during the celebration of the Lord's Supper... But perhaps I should stop at this point. There are far too many weird doings and cockamamie doctrines going on in the Church of Corinth. Permit me, please, to take the best approach and invite you into our Bible study to discover these situations with us. We plan to delve into them and get to the bottom of it. After all, we wouldn't want to go through the same mess in our church today, would we? The approach for "1 Corinthians," and for every volume in the "Heavenly Citizens" series, is to teach the student the meaning of Scripture. We also teach him or her how to study the Bible on his/her own. We do this in two ways: we provide a few rules by which to govern our Bible study, and we demonstrate by example how to study the Bible. Experience is an outstanding teacher. In our books we practice the rules for Bible study. By walking through the Bible with us, the reader experiences firsthand what our method of study is like. We believe the student will come out of our studies with both an understanding of the Bible and the ability to truthfully understand the Bible on his/her own. The path lies before you. Walk through the gate and join the journey with us! And may the blessings of the Lord Jesus Christ be yours in abundance.

Book excerpt: With keen sensitivity, Marion L. Soards helps readers span the gap between one of the earliest Christian communities with its concerns over Wisdom, in-groups and out-groups, manifestations of the Holy Spirit, Christian behavior, and the resurrection of Christ and the Christian of today. He presents Paul's apocalyptic-eschatological outlook as perhaps a key to unlocking some of the more knotty passages in 1 Corinthians and helps readers realize the nature of that radical theological world view. - from publisher's description.

Pascuzzi, CSJ, helps us look at the Corinthian community through Paul's viewpoint, highlighting the struggles and issues of the Corinthian society. Pascuzzi highlights how Paul's attempt to reform this early society can be used to refocus the Christian community today-a community that faces similar struggles. Pascuzzi gives the background of Corinth, its Greek and Roman inhabitants, the development of the Christian community, and the importance of Corinth's location to Paul's ministry. Maria A. Pascuzzi, CSJ, STD, teaches Scripture at the University of San Diego.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This verse-by-verse commentary on First Corinthians offers a thorough but very understandable commentary on the entirety of Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. Since the First Corinthians letter touches on a number of different subjects, this volume also offers some special studies to more fully explore what the Bible says on additional topics like civil government, the role of women in the church, spiritual gifts, etc. If you want to have a better understanding of First Corinthians, this commentary will help you! Here is a small sample of the text: Introduction to First Corinthians 13: Some consider 1 Cor. 13 the “love chapter of the Bible” or a “parenthetical description of love,” but this chapter is actually an integral part of Paul’s discussion about spiritual gifts. Since the Corinthians were rude, jealous, and boastful, it was necessary for them “to go beyond their present pursuit. To the apostle, the development of the character of the person was superior to the exercise of the gift. His contrasts (chap. 13) are clear: gifts without love vs. gifts with love, and the permanence of love vs. the temporal nature of gifts” (Gromacki, p. 159). Stated another way, verses 1-3 affirm that spiritual gifts were worthless without love, verses 4-7 affirm that love was superior to the gifts, and verses 8-13 assert that spiritual gifts were temporal but love abides. Although 1 Cor. 13 may seem familiar to many, this chapter is often one of the most misunderstood parts of the New Testament. The Corinthians’ elevation of spiritual gifts over love is seen in places such as 12:13-25; 14:27-33, 40. It is also found by contrasting the qualities in 1 Cor. 13 with other sections of this epistle. For instance, love “suffers long” (13:4), but tongue speakers at Corinth were impatient (14:27-28). Love does not “envy” (13:4), but the Corinthians envied the gifts of others (chapter 12). Love “is not puffed up” (13:4), but tongue speakers were proud (compare 13:1). Love causes people to act in a kind and orderly way, but some of the Corinthians’ behavior was disorderly (14:23, 40). Love is not “unseemly,” but the Corinthians were at risk of unseemly behavior in their families (1 Cor. 7:36) as well as their Sunday assemblies (1 Cor. 11:2-16, 17-34). Agape love “does not seek its own” (13:5), but these Christians were seeking their own (see 1 Cor. 8 and the discussion about idol meat). Love keeps people from “rejoicing in evil” (13:6), but the Corinthians rejoiced in evil (1 Cor. 5:2, 6). There were various things that “provoked” these brethren (13:5) and it seems they were “keeping a record of evil” (1 Cor. 13:5). It was time for the members of this congregation to show some spiritual maturity and demonstrate the type of love that “bears all things, believes all things, hopes in all things, and endures all things” (1 Cor. 13:7).
