Book excerpt: The latest release of CORBA boasts many new features that were highly anticipated by developers, including all of the necessary services for building fully distributed applications regardless of platform or programming language. Written by a leading international authority on CORBA and the bestselling author of CORBA 3 Fundamentals and Programming, Second Edition (0-471-29518-3), this book delivers on its title, providing a quick and easy-to-understand reference to CORBA 3 for developers who just need the basics to the upgrade--and don't have the time to read a huge reference guide. After reviewing the features grouped under the CORBA 3 banner, Siegel goes on to describe the integration of CORBA with Java and the Internet, mapping XML to OMG IDL, messaging, QoS control including specializations for Real-Time and embedded systems, and the CORBA Component Model (CCM).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastering interoperability in a computing environment consisting of different operating systems and hardware architectures is a key requirement which faces system engineers building distributed information systems. Distributed applications are a necessity in most central application sectors of the contemporary computerized society, for instance, in office automation, banking, manufacturing, telecommunication and transportation. This book focuses on the techniques available or under development, with the goal of easing the burden of constructing reliable and maintainable interoperable information systems. The topics covered in this book include: Management of distributed systems; Frameworks and construction tools; Open architectures and interoperability techniques; Experience with platforms like CORBA and RMI; Language interoperability (e.g. Java); Agents and mobility; Quality of service and fault tolerance; Workflow and object modelling issues; and Electronic commerce . The book contains the proceedings of the International Working Conference on Distributed Applications and Interoperable Systems II (DAIS'99), which was held June 28-July 1, 1999 in Helsinki, Finland. It was sponsored by the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP). The conference program presents the state of the art in research concerning distributed and interoperable systems. This is a topical research area where much activity is currently in progress. Interesting new aspects and innovative contributions are still arising regularly. The DAIS series of conferences is one of the main international forums where these important findings are reported.

As for the 2002 edition in Irvine, the organizers wanted to stimulate this cross-pollination with a program of shared famous keynote speakers (this year we got Sycara, - ble, Soley and Mylopoulos!), and encouraged multiple attendance by providing authors with free access to another conference or workshop of their choice. We received an even larger number of submissions than last year for the three conferences (360 in total) and the workshops (170 in total). Not only can we therefore again claim a measurable success in attracting a representative volume of scienti?c papers, but such a harvest allowed the program committees of course to compose a high-quality cross-section of worldwide research in the areas covered. In spite of the increased number of submissions, the Program Chairs of the three main conferences decided to accept only approximately the same number of papers for presentation and publication as in 2002 (i. e. , around 1 paper out of every 4–5 submitted). For the workshops, the acceptance rate was about 1 in 2. Also for this reason, we decided to separate the proceedings into two volumes with their own titles, and we are grateful to Springer-Verlag for their collaboration in producing these two books. The reviewing process by the respective program committees was very professional and each paper in the main conferences was reviewed by at least three referees.

Book excerpt: About The Book: Nearly 30,000 Java developers relied on the first two editions of Java Programming with CORBA to learn how to build large-scale applications with CORBA components. These same developers now have more reason than ever to embrace the third edition. That's because the latest release of Java, Java 2E Enterprise Edition, fully supports component development with both CORBA and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB). Developers need to know how to use both CORBA and EJB to get the most from their Java applications. This how-to book provides in-depth coding examples not just snippets of code and tackles advanced programming issues that enterprise developers face every day.

Written by one of the principal authors of XMI, this book provides programmers with everything they need to know to best utilize this extension. The authors cover the basics first, detailing the essential concepts and explaining how XMI relates to XML and UML. Readers will then learn how to program with XMI, including how to express data in XMI, create XMI documents with Java, and merge documents. Samples of real-world XMI applications are also included throughout the book that show how IBM is using XMI with data warehousing and how to convert simple relational databases into XMI. CD-ROM includes sample XMI source code and software tools for developing XMI and XML applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to MMNS 2003. Multimedia services over IP networks are proliferating at an enormous speed. There is also increasing demand for solutions that provide assured levels of s- vice quality. All of these require novel paradigms, models, and architectures for realizing integrated end-to-end service management rather than managing n- work elements in isolation. Providing scalable Quality of Service (QoS) while maintaining fairness, along with secure and optimal network resource mana- ment, are key challenges for the future Internet. These challenges apply to both ?xed and wireless networks. This book contains all of the papers presented at the 6th IFIP/IEEE - ternational Conference on Management of Multimedia Networks and Services (MMNS 2003) hosted by The Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, September 7–10, 2003. MMNS 2003 follows the successful conferences held in Santa Barbara (2002), Chicago (2001), Fortaleza, Brazil (2000), Paris (1998), and Montreal (1997). MMNS uses single-track presentations, which provide an intimate setting for discussion and debate. The conference is known for its high quality papers from various research communities. In just six years, MMNS has established itself as one of the premier conferences focusing on the management of multimedia networks and services. The conference objective is to bring - gether researchers working in all facets of network and service management as applied to broadband networks and multimedia services.

It addresses not only the underlying building blocks, but also how they interact and why they are used. The second part of the book provides more detail about how these building blocks are employed in EJB. In the final section the authors fully explore the benefits of building a system based on components. * Examples demonstrate how the 3 main component infrastructures EJB, CCM and COM+ compare * Provides a mix of principles and concrete examples with detailed UML diagrams and extensive source code * Forewords supplied by industry leaders: Clemens Syzperski and Frank Buschmann

Book excerpt: The only complete technical guide to building integrated business systems using the convergent architecture approach In his groundbreaking Business Engineering with Object Technology (0-471-04521-7), David Taylor introduced the concept of convergent architecture (CA), a framework for building the business design directly into the software systems that support it. Now, in this important follow-up to that 1995 classic, expert Richard Hubert provides systems developers and architects with their first complete blueprint for building integrated CA business systems using the hottest technologies, including Enterprise JavaBeans, XML, UML, Rational Rose, and others. Following a detailed introduction to the elements of CA, he walks readers through the entire CA design and implementation process, using examples in Java and EJB to illustrate key points. Companion Website provides hands-on tutorials, links to related tool sites, and updates to the CA methodology.

Book excerpt: How to use UML to model Enterprise JavaBeans, Swing components, CORBA, and other popular technologies Enterprise Java with UML is the first comprehensive guide on using UML (Unified Modeling Language) to model Java applications. Written by three well-known members of the UML and Java community, the book presents strategies for developing enterprise systems using Java and related technologies -- XML, Servlets, Enterprise JavaBeans, Swing Components, CORBA, RMI, and others. The authors explain how UML is used as a modeling tool for object-oriented computer systems in the real world, break down common situations that development teams encounter, and discuss the tradeoffs of using different technologies in different combinations. They also explore different products, looking closely at their strengths and weaknesses. Four in-depth studies complete the presentation, showing readers how to make the right decision for their project through examples of both successes and failures.
