Understanding the impact of coral disease is important for reef managers in order to better enable them to protect and restore local ecosystems and resources. This course is designed to give experienced divers a deeper understanding of coral reefs, and the threats they face from the many different diseases they've been observed to suffer from. The aim of this manual is to introduce the theory and practical considerations of surveying coral reef sites for disease. This course builds off the knowledge gained during the Conservation Diver Ecological Monitoring Program (EMP) certification, and will provide divers with the techniques needed to track reef health in more sophisticated detail than previously explored.

Chapter 5 addresses safety precautions on the boat, by response divers and during field laboratory operations"--Preface.
Book Synopsis Field Guide to Western Atlantic Coral Diseases by : Coral Reef Conservation Program (U.S.)
Download or read book Field Guide to Western Atlantic Coral Diseases written by Coral Reef Conservation Program (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Western Atlantic Coral Disease Identification Field Guide uses standardized nomenclature and diagnostic criteria for coral diseases developed by the Coral Disease and Health Consortium (CDHC). This involves a three-tiered approach to naming diseases and a decision tree that would help unify disease names. Through application of a series of steps, a researcher can determine a common field name for a disease which can be further refined based on a morphologic diagnosis and an etiologic diagnosis. This is based on techniques applied to the study of other terrestrial and marine animal diseases that include 1) detection of disease, 2) description of the morphologic changes in the host associated with the disease, 3) evaluation of morphologic changes in the host as disease progresses (e.g., pathogenesis), determining the cause (e.g., etiology), and physiologic changes in the host as the disease progresses (e.g., pathophysiology). These underwater cards help a diver complete a level 1 diagnosis"--P. 2.

Book Synopsis Pathogens of Coral Disease in the Indo-Pacific Ocean by : Meir Sussman
Download or read book Pathogens of Coral Disease in the Indo-Pacific Ocean written by Meir Sussman and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a detailed study of two coral diseases currently prevalent on Indo-Pacific coral reefs. Black Band Disease (BBD) has been first reported from Caribbean reefs and has been investigated in this study on reefs in the Republic of Palau. White Syndrome (WS) has been reported from many locations on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) and throughout the Indo-Pacific Ocean. This work identified causative agents for WS, which are all members of the Gammaproteobacteria family Vibrionaceae. This study follows the identification of WS coral pathogens from the initial isolation of putative pathogens, through the design and execution of infection experiments, to the final phylogenic classification of these deadly pathogens and the identification of their unique virulence mechanism. Readers with general interest in the field of coral diseases will find great benefit following the narrative of this study, while scientists specializing in the study of coral diseases will find in this detailed and comprehensive work a detailed manual to mastering the art of coral pathogen identification.
Book Synopsis The Ecology and Etiology of Newly Emerging Marine Diseases by : James W. Porter
Download or read book The Ecology and Etiology of Newly Emerging Marine Diseases written by James W. Porter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ecology and Etiology of Newly Emerging Marine Diseases is a unique contribution to an entirely new field of scientific investigation. For the first time, material presented in this book identifies patterns and trends in the abundance and distribution of disease phenomena in the marine environment. These patterns have gone unrecognised and undetected in the past because the literature in this field is so widely scattered. The book is both interdisciplinary and synthetic. Studies in this book unequivocally link marine diseases to global climate change. The book changes our perspective on the major controls over the population dynamics of marine organisms. Papers in this volume clearly identify the intimate connection between public health and environmental health for marine-borne diseases such as cholera and human enteroviruses.

Book Synopsis Coral Reefs and Climate Change by : Jonathan Turnbull Phinney
Download or read book Coral Reefs and Climate Change written by Jonathan Turnbull Phinney and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 2006-01-10 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Coastal and Estuarine Studies, Volume 61. The effects of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and related climate change on shallow coral reefs are gaining considerable attention for scientific and economic reasons worldwide. Although increased scientific research has improved our understanding of the response of coral reefs to climate change, we still lack key information that can help guide reef management. Research and monitoring of coral reef ecosystems over the past few decades have documented two major threats related to increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2: (1) increased sea surface temperatures and (2) increased seawater acidity (lower pH). Higher atmospheric CO2 levels have resulted in rising sea surface temperatures and proven to be an acute threat to corals and other reef-dwelling organisms. Short periods (days) of elevated sea surface temperatures by as little as 1–2°C above the normal maximum temperature has led to more frequent and more widespread episodes of coral bleaching-the expulsion of symbiotic algae. A more chronic consequence of increasing atmospheric CO2 is the lowering of pH of surface waters, which affects the rate at which corals and other reef organisms secrete and build their calcium carbonate skeletons. Average pH of the surface ocean has already decreased by an estimated 0.1 unit since preindustrial times, and will continue to decline in concert with rising atmospheric CO2. These climate-related Stressors combined with other direct anthropogenic assaults, such as overfishing and pollution, weaken reef organisms and increase their susceptibility to disease.
