Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adventures of trial lawyer Eddie Terrell continue. His professional life is prospering. His personal life is a dumpster fire. Usually racing to the prize fight, Eddie comes to the realization that he needs to beat a hasty retreat from the enticing flames and recalibrate on his own impulsive and subjective terms. Wishing to expand his professional interests by accomplishing something on the darker side, Eddie decides to head an investment scheme with a promising payoff. Of course, there are risks that must be navigated, risks that might require dangerously effective actions. Set in the early 2000s, Eddie is, as always, fascinated by women and they by him. Out West while resting his addled mind, he finds a new friend who is beautiful, bold, and game. She matches him wit for wit as he takes the paths less traveled and begins to make it up on the fly with trusted partners from the less than high-end zip codes. Even Eddie's oft-imperious, oft-skeptical mother is intrigued. Crawling out of his personal funk, Eddie reorganizes his life through unusual means, jumping the rails and going awry plenty, but always yanking himself back on course. And his newfound stimuli further ramp up his always tenacious trial skills. He welcomes orderly disorder, the playing of chess on four levels. This is a work of fiction embedded in the truth of conflict and calculation. As Ralph Waldo Emerson intoned, "Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

Download or read book Bikeri written by Attila Gyucha and published by Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition from the Neolithic period to the Copper Age in the northern Balkans and the Carpathian Basin was marked by significant changes in material culture, settlement layout and organization, and mortuary practices that indicate fundamental social transformations in the middle of the fifth millennium BC. Prior research into the Late Neolithic of the region focused almost exclusively on fortified 'tell' settlements. The Early Copper Age, by contrast, was known primarily from cemeteries such as the type site of Tiszapolgar-Basatanya. This edited book describes the multi-disciplinary research conducted by the Koros Regional Archaeological Project in southeastern Hungary from 2000-2007. Centered around two Early Copper Age Tiszapolgar culture villages in the Koros Region of the Great Hungarian Plain, Veszto-Bikeri and Korosladany-Bikeri, our research incorporated excavation, surface collection, geophysical survey and soil chemistry to investigate settlement layout and organization. Our results yielded the first extensive, systematically collected datasets from Early Copper Age settlements on the Great Hungarian Plain. The two adjacent villages at Bikeri, located only 70 m apart, were similar in size, and both were protected with fortifications. Relative and absolute dates demonstrate that they were occupied sequentially during the Early Copper Age, from ca. 4600-4200 cal B.C. The excavated assemblages from the sites are strikingly similar, suggesting that both were occupied by the same community. This process of settlement relocation after only a few generations breaks from the longer-lasting settlement pattern that are typical of the Late Neolithic, but other aspects of the villages continue traditions that were established during the preceding period, including the construction of enclosure systems and longhouses.

Book Synopsis Burying the Mountain by : Shangyang Fang
Download or read book Burying the Mountain written by Shangyang Fang and published by Copper Canyon Press. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Shangyang Fang’s debut Burying the Mountain, longing and loss rush through a portal of difficult beauty. Absence is translated into fire ants and snow, a boy’s desire is transfigured into the indifference of mountains and rivers, and loneliness finds its place in the wounded openness of language. From the surface of a Song Dynasty ink-wash painting to a makeshift bedroom in Chengdu, these poems thread intimacy, eros, and grief. Evoking the music of ancient Chinese poetry, Fang alloys political erasure, exile, remembrance, and death into a single brushstroke on the silk scroll, where names are forgotten as paper boats on water.
